2003 Dutton-Goldfield Devil’s Gulch Vineyard Marin County Pinot Dan Goldfield has an irrepressible passion for wine. He was raised in Philadelphia and came to University of California Berkeley in 1980 to work as a research scientist. His brother had exposed him to fine Pinot Noir with a tasting of top Burgundies and his close proximity to wine country led him to study winemaking. After graduating from University of California Davis with an MS in enology, he pursued a winemaking career that took him from Mondavi, to Schramsberg, to La Crema, and to Hartford Court. He sought out and urged the planting of the cool western areas of Sonoma County and sourced grapes from these vineyards for a number of distinctive Pinot Noir bottlings. In 1998, he formed a label with partner Steve Dutton - Dutton-Goldfield (pictured below, Steve on left). Steve Dutton is a fifth generation farmer whose father, Warren, began growing grapes in the western Russian River Valley in the mid 1960s. Steve manages at least 80 vineyards and farms over 1,000 acres in Sonoma County. These vineyards supply grapes for more than 20 wineries, including Kistler, Hartford Court, Cakebread, DuMol and Patz & Hall. Dutton-Goldfield specializes in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and cool-climate Syrah. The Dutton-Goldfield Devil’s Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noirs are special wines. · The 2003 vintage (13.4% alc., 392 cases), has the most aging potential showing earthy, loamy and leather notes at present. The texture is silky and the fruit is highlighted by attractive violets in the nose. Reviewed July 16, 2007
