2017 Gary Farrell Hallberg Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.8% alc., $55. 100-acre vineyard nestled in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley. A blend of many of the best blocks on this cool, foggy vineyard site including clones 667, 777, “828,” Pommard and a suitcase selection. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Terrific array of aromas including black cherry, blackberry, red rose petal, cardamom spice and a hint of vanilla. The impressive harmony strikes a chord with the first sip. Mid-weight plus flavors of dark cherry and raspberry that stand out for their freshness. Multiple clones including 777, 114, 115, “828,” Pommard, Martini and Swan. Harvest Brix 25.9º. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is primarily oak-driven with aromas of toast and smoke overriding the black cherry fruit. Mid weight flavors of blackberry, boysenberry and black raspberry with generous toasty oak in the background. An unpolished, voluptuously fruity wine with a modest finish. Score: 88. 2016 Emeritus Hallberg Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.9% alc., $44. This wine represents the diversity of the Hallberg Ranch. A blend of about 40 individual lots of Hallberg Pinot Noir. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 32% new. Estate grown, produced and bottled. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. A heavy imprint of oak is evident on the nose that offers aromas of toast, savory spices, black cherry and clay. A middleweight plus style with layers of blackberry and black current fruit. Lush in texture with good structure, but there is a stemmy thread in the background and the wine could use more energy. 2016 Gary Farrell Hallberg Vineyard-Dijon Clones Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.7% alc., pH 3.39, TA 0.67, 937 cases, $60. Released September 18, 2018. Clones 667 and 777. A small percentage of whole cluster. 4 to 7-day cold soak, 7-10 days post fermentation extended maceration, and aging for 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Shy aromas of grilled dark fruits, sweet pipe smoke and wet earth. A full-bodied, big gulp of purple and black fruits, yet the wine is in balance without heaviness or flabbiness. the appealing texture is satiny and the intense boysenberry-themed finish really satisfies. I find that the dark color and rich fruit is typical for this vineyard. Theresa has been able to tame the fruit explosion as well as conceal the oak in the background. Dry farmed. 100% de-stemmed, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Pleasant aromas of an array of dark red and black fruits with a compliment of oak spice. The flavors mimic the aromas in a nicely balanced mid weight styled wine with gracious tannins and a fruit-driven finish. Silky in the mouth and forward drinking. Score: 91. 2016 Emeritus Pinot Hill East Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., 300 cases, $75. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Pinot Hill East is a significantly cooler east side of the vineyard. · Pleasing aromas of black cherry, blueberry, savory herbs and balsam. Similar to the Pinot Hill West bottling but more appealing aromatics. Mid weight in style and quite earthy in tone, with an array of black fruits. Sleek in the mouth with modest tannins and a modest finish. Like the Pinot Hill East botttling, this wine also displays a taste of guaiacol. 2016 Emeritus Pinot Hill West Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.2% alc., 225 cases, $75. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 42% new. The west side receives more afternoon sun producing more overt fruit flavors. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of burnt tobacco, rose petal and black cherry. A mid weight style, with oak-infused and ostentatious purple and black fruits. Quite earthy with a noticeable taste of guaiacol. 2016 Emeritus Wesley’s Reserve Hallberg Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.7% alc., 450 cases, $75. This debut vintage is made exclusively from a selection of the prized center blocks of Hallberg Ranch, an area that yields the vineyard’s most robust and dark-fruited wines. Wesley’s Reserve is named after Brice’s father, William Wesley Jones, a former Air Force Colonel. Aged 14 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of cherry vanilla cola and savory herbs come to the fore. A flood of blackest cherry, blackberry and Hoison flavors are framed by a healthy tannic backbone that keeps the generous fruit in balance. Thoroughly satisfying in a mid weight style featuring flavors of black cherry, blackberry and spice with a deft touch of oak in the background. 2015 Emeritus Vineyards Hallberg Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.0% alc., $44. Soils here are Goldridge sandy loam. Multiple clones are planted over 107.76 acres, including 4, 5, 115, 459, 667, 777, “828,” Cruz, Elite and Hyde. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. This wine takes awhile to open and my comments are based on sampling the wine after the bottle had been opened several hours. Aromas of purple berries, spice and floral esters. An array of fruits great the palate including dark red cherry, raspberry and boysenberry arrayed in a mid weight style. Clones 777 and 667. 100% gently de-stemmed, 4 to 7-day cold soak, 10 days post fermentation extended maceration, inoculated for malolactic fermentation, and aged 10 months on the primary lees in French oak barrels 40% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Heady aromas of boysenberry, earthy flora and bark. Noteworthy attack of mid weight boysenberry and blackberry fruits accented with baking spices and pine needle. 2015 Chateau St. Jean Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.6% alc., $70. Sourced from Hallberg Vineyard. Clones 777, 115 and “828.” 3-day cold soak, aged 17 months in French oak barrels, 70% new and aged an additional six months before release. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Muted aromas of black fruits, anise, dark toast and cigar. Ripe, bold and rich, with mid weight plus flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cassis, root beer and spice with an earthy undertone. Oak is well-integrated and the tannic backbone matches up well to the sappy fruit. Nicely balanced and well crafted in this ripe-fruited, hedonistic style, but not my cup of tea. Score: 88. An annual wine club exclusive offering representing the finest barrels of each harvest. 50% Hallberg Vineyard clones 777 and Pommard 5, 25% Floodgate Vineyard clones 777, 667, 115 and Pommard 4, and 25% Appian Way Vineyard clones 115, 777 and Pommard 4 and 5. 100% de-stemmed grapes, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is rather shy, offering demure aromas of blackberry jam and prune. Very ripe flavors of blackberry, raisin and cassis with an oak-driven marzipan note. Very silky, with supportive tannins and some length on the finish. Considerably more appealing when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, showing more fruit expression including additional flavors of black plum, black raspberry and spice, and still sporting considerable length on a fruit-driven finish. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Nice perfume of Bing cherry, cherry pie spice, purple grape and a hint of oak. A solid offering of mid weight black cherry, blueberry and spice flavors with a top note of toast, earth, tar and black tea. This original apple growing property, named after the former owners, Don and Marcia Hallberg, was sold to Emeritus Vineyards in 1999. Goldridge soils. Yields 2.40 tons per acre. 100% de-stemmed, aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 22% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The scent of black raspberry, blackberry, spice and woodland is inviting. Up front black raspberry and blackberry fruits blanket the mid palate, carrying over on the lifted, juicy and very long sweet-fruited finish. A compliment of oak plays in the background in this harmonious offering. Considerably more enjoyable the next day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Score: 91. Mostly de-stemmed with a small portion of whole cluster. 5 to 7-day cold soak, 10 to 15-day extended maceration. Aged 14 months on the primary lees in 100% French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately light reddish purple hue in the glass. This wine aims to please with aromas and flavors of red berries, blueberries, and cherries with a modicum of oak contribution. 2013 Scherrer Hallberg Vineyard Green Valley of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., 48 cases, $75. Released November 2017. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, pomegranate, exotic spices and burnt tobacco (suggesting some whole cluster). A middleweight style with welcome elegance, offering flavors of black cherry, strawberry and pomegranate with noticeable smoky oak in the background, Nicely balanced with a pleasurable and extended finish. Knude. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose is shy upon opening and better the following day from a previously opened bottle. Aromas of dark red cherry, brewed tea and gingerbread. A pleasant, easy drinking wine with a mid weight core of slightly sweet cherries with notes of spice, cola and oak. Respectable balance with mild tannins and some finishing power. Score: 88. Sourced from Champlain Creek and Wildcat Mountain vineyards in the Sonoma Coast, Hellenthal Vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview, and Dutton-Hallberg Ranch in the Russian River Valley. 100% de-stemmed, inoculated yeast fermentation, punch downs and pump overs, aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new. · Moderately light ruby color in the glass. Aromas and flavors of cherry, plum and huckleberry with a complimentary touch of spice and oak. Soft and smooth in the mouth with balanced tannins and some finishing fruit presence. Easy to drink. Fresh aromas of strawberry, cherry, rose petal and spicy oak. Very nicely composed, with appealing flavors of Bing cherry syrup, cola and baking spices. Small percentage of whole cluster to add tannins, spice and complexity. 5 to 7-day cold soak, inoculated fermentation, 10 to 15-day post fermentation maceration. Aged 14 months in 40% new French oak on primary lees. · Dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose picks up interest over time in the glass, revealing aromas of blackberry, plum reduction sauce and allspice. Has shoulders but is still refined, offering mid weight flavors of blackberry, plum and vanillin oak. Crisp and bright, with penetrating energy and a noticeably persistent finish. Partially de-stemmed (a small percentage of whole cluster was used), 5 to 7 day cold soak, 10 to 15 day extended maceration after fermentation. Aged 9 months in 40% new French oak barrels. Racked off the primary lees once just before bottling. · Medium reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of very ripe dark berries, red and black licorice and spice. Mid weight flavors of very ripe blueberries and raspberries, with a hint of anise-laced oak. Juicy and bright with modest tannins and a soprano finish. 2012 Gary Farrell Hallberg Vineyard 777 Oak Tank Fermented 17% Whole Cluster Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.3% alc., pH 3.50, TA 0.70, 120 cases, $65. Released June 2014. Clone 777 from Block M of the 100- acre Hallberg Vineyard. Partially de-stemmed with whole clusters placed on top of the de-stemmed fruit so the stems could dry and develop more spice and refined tannins. Foot treading of the grapes was used initially to macerate, then 1 to 2 punch downs per day. 10 to 15-day post fermentation extended maceration. Aged 14 months in 50% new French oak barrels on primary lees. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is very shy upon opening but explodes with aromatic goodness the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Plenty of spicy black berries seduce the senses on the mid to full-bodied palate and fruit-charged finish. Rather exotic, even fascinating, with many nuances unfolding over time in the glass. There is enough fruit to balance the wine’s broad shouldered tannins which will need some time in bottle to fully soften and integrate. A connoisseur's wine. Score: 94. From Block C at the Hallberg Vineyard, one of the coolest parts of the vineyard planted to clone 777. Aged 13 months in 40% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose offers the essence of black cherries with accents of cardamom spice, dark red rose petals and oak vanillin. Delicious core of fresh black cherry and red raspberry fruits with a hint of exotic spice, savory herbs and cedary oak. 2010 Alysian Hallberg Vineyard Crossroads Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., pH 3.39, TA 0.66, 156 cases, $55. Dijon clone 777. Average harvest Brix 23.6º. 100% de-stemmed. Combination of wild and cultured yeast fermentation, MLF fermentation in barrel. Aged 12 months in 40% new and 60% one and two-year-old French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Shy, slowly evolving aromas of dark berry jam and complimentary oak. Mid weight tasty flavors of blackberries, plum sauce and cola, robed in modest dusty tannins, and brought into focus with bright acidity, and finishing with a long dark-fruited finish with a citrus undertone. This wine reflects nicely the terroir of this vineyard displaying aromas of chocolate-covered black cherries and black plums with a slight savory tone, and flavors of black cherry, cola, anise and dark chocolate. Bright aromas of Bing cherries, cola and baking spice rise out of the glass, persisting over time. Moderately concentrated flavors of cherries wrapped in supple tannins and framed by bright acidity. Fat in the mouth with a richness only Russian River Valley Pinot Noir can deliver. I love this wine for its pure exuberance. Gary points out, “While we love the vineyard-specific wines for their purity and focused expression of each individual property, the Russian River Selection often displays greater complexity and (to some) is a more complete and satisfying offering.” · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Bright aromas of Bing cherries and strawberries with good volume. Exuberant flavors of black cherries, dark red berries, tea leaf, cola and clove with a slight herbal note contributed by sweet oak. Full-bodied yet not overbearing, with reserved tannins, and admirable length. I agree with Gary that this is his finest Alysian Russian River Valley Selection to date. Pleasant aromas of dark red and black fruits, spice, and wine cask, developing complexity over time in the glass. Tasty core of earth-kissed black plum and blackberry flavors with the fruit pulled into line with structured tannins and zippy citric acidity. A complimentary hint of oak brings up the rear. The 100-acre Hallberg Vineyard was named for its previous owners Don and Marcia Hallberg and today is owned by a group of investors headed by Brice Jones of Emeritus. 58% clone 777, 31% clone 667, 11% Pommard. The grapes were 100% destemmed, 5-day cold soak, inoculated with Assmanshausen yeast for primary fermentation. Aged in 55% new French oak barrels for 12 months. · Moderately dark reddish-violet color. Rich and pleasing aromas of black cherries, dark berries and crusty bread. On the palate there is a mix of Pinot fruits including cherries, black raspberries and plums with a hint of citrus on the finish. Earth, tea and cola notes add interest. The mouthfeel is very smooth, the dry tannins are reserved, and the wine shows admirable Pinot finesse. My only nit is that the wine lacks mid-palate impact and shows minimal finishing persistence, but these features should improve with another year or two in the bottle. 2004 TR Elliott Three Plumes Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

320 cases, $32. Theodore R Elliott is the man behind Elliott Family Cellars, a very small producer of Pinot Noir in Santa Rosa. He has many years experience as a grape grower and winemaker including a stint with Sonoma Cutrer. His wines are perfect examples of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. This wine and his other cuvee (Queste) won Gold Medals at the 2006 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. The two Pinot Noirs he produces are cuvees from two vineyards - Vine Hill and Hallberg (formerly Goldridge). The wine is composed of three clones - 115, Pommard 5, and 777. Aging is in 36% new oak. The wines are available online on the website at www.elliottfamilycellars.com. · A nicely perfumed Pinot with cherries, rhubarb, and Asian spice.
