Coury, Wädenswil and Pommard clones. Vineyard originally planted in 1971. Harvest Brix 23.9º-24.8º. Aged 8 months in French oak barrels. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Lovely aromas of cherry, Herbs de Provence and sweet oak. A cheerful mid weight wine in the mouth that is vibrant and juicy with buried tannins. 2015 Penner-Ash Wine Cellars Pas de Nom Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., pH 3.78, TA 0.47, 350 cases, $125. Sourced from Bella Vida, Shea, Penner-Ash Estate, Elevée, Hyland and Zena Crown vineyards. Select barrels in the cellar. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new, 25% one-year-old, 30% two-yearold and 5% neutral. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Easy to find superlatives for this special wine with no name. Intense aromas of cherry, rose petal and forest floor, broadening over time to deeper tones. Delicious mid weight black raspberry, black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors that offer pleasing density and a mouth coating finish. Stunning mid palate presence with a dreamy texture, integrated tannins, and a deft touch of toasty, peppery oak. Considerably better when tasted later in the day from a previously opened bottle and still embraceable two days later. This is a celebratory wine for special occasions. Score: 95. 2014 Soléna Domaine Hyland Vineyard Legacy McMinnville Oregon Pinot Noir 13.2% alc., pH 3.73, 25 cases, $100. A single barrel selection chosen by Laurent Montalieu to represent the best expression of the Hyland Vineyard in 2014. Vines first planted in 1972 in volcanic Jory soils. Harvest Brix 25º. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Lovely, delicate aromas of fresh black cherries and earthy flora. A light to mid weight style wine with redder fruit flavors and spice galore. The wine hits all the high notes in the mouth and on the finish, flaunting impeccable balance, modest but adequate tannins and the power without weight that only Pinot Noir can deliver. Dijon 76 and 95, California 108 and 04. Aged 10 months in French oak, 17% new. · Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. Shy but pleasant aromas of spiced apple, lemon creme and vanilla. 2012 Youngberg Hill Cuvée McMinnville Oregon Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 298 cases, $35, screwcap. Some 777 clone fruit sourced from Bjornson (Eola-Amity Hills) and Hyland (McMinnville) vineyards as well as Youngberg Estate Camelot Block. 100% 777 clone. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Appealing aromas of black cherry and raspberry with a hint of chocolate. Discreetly concentrated core of tasty black cherry and black raspberry fruits with a touch of spice. 2011 Solená Hyland Vineyard McMinnville Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.6% alc., pH 3.60, 175 cases, $50. This vineyard was planted in the 1970s, and was purchased by the Montalieus and the Niemeyers in May 2007. The estate is 200 acres with just over 120 acres planted densely to vines. Soils are volcanic Jory and some Nekia. The vineyard is composed of 47.21 acres of own-rooted, old vine Pinot Noir, 41.84 acres of newer, grafted Pinot Noir clones, and small amounts of Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Müller- Thurgau. 100% de-stemmed, Yield 1.9 tons per acre, harvest Brix 23.4º18 days skin contact, aged 11 months in 28% new French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish-purple hue in the glass. The nose offers an array of dark red and black berry aromas with added scents of spice and espresso oak. Elegant and flavorful, with a modestly weighted core of black raspberry, black cherry and nutty oak flavors supported by svelte tannins and a lively cut of acidity. The fruits are vivid as they cascade across the palate, finishing with impressive intensity. Considerably more appealing the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle with better oak integration, more finesse and more forward fruit. Score: 91. 2011 Hyland Estates Coury McMinnville Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.3% alc., pH 3.68, $60. The Coury “clone” is a suitcase selection brought to Oregon from Alsace by Charles Coury in the early 1960s. The cuttings were first rooted in Carneros and later in Coury’s vineyard in Forest Grove. Cuttings from these initial plantings were established throughout Oregon including Hyland Vineyard. The true identity of the Coury “clone” remains a mystery. Sourced from Block 3C, planted in 1971 from stock obtained from Charles Coury, and block 6, the second planting of the Coury “clone” in 1989 propagated from Block 3C vines. Harvest Brix 23.3º. Aged 10 months in 56% French oak cooperage. A limited barrel selection. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose brims with fresh aromas of red cherries and raspberries with hints of sandalwood and mushroom. Impressive mid palate attack of delicious red cherry, red plum and raspberry fruits with a hint of dried herbs in the background. The fruit is notable vivid, the acidity is nervy and juicy, and the finish is riff with intense red cherry flavor. Delicate in this vintage but plenty of charm. Score: 90. 2010 Hyland Estates McMinnville Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.7% alc., pH 3.64, $35. Released May 31, 2012. From blocks 1, 3, 5 and 6 in the Hyland Vineyard, planted in 1971, 1979, 1984 and 1989 respectively in mainly volcanic Jory and Nekia soils. Clones are Coury, Wädenswil and Pommard. Harvest Brix 23.9º. Aged 18 months in 38% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple robe. Aromas of black cherries, spice, tea leaf and underbrush lead to an earth-kissed black cherry core with accents of black currant, plum and truffle. Silky and easy to drink with modest balanced tannins and a long and refreshing finish. Still pumping out the aromas and flavors the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2009 Hyland Estates McMinnville Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.60, TA 0.58, $35. Aged in 10% new French oak from multiple coopers. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Very shy upon opening and much more aromatically pleasing the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle showing bright Bing cherry and cranberry fruit. Moderately rich, forward and alluring with smooth and supportive tannins and a velvety mouth feel. The core of well-ripened cherries and berries is accented with notes of cola, mocha and spice. 2006 Soléna Hyland Vineyard McMinnville Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.33, $45. This 120-acre vineyard planted in 1970 and purchased by the Montalieus in 2007. Soils are volcanic Jory and some Nekia. The vineyard contains both own-rooted old-growth plantings and newer, grafted Pinot Noir clones. Grapes were de-stemmed, 6-day cold soak, fermented in rotary barrels, aged 15 months in 215 new French oak, unfined and unfiltered. · Very subdued aromatics with delicate floral and berry scents. Impressive infusion of berry jam on the palate with oak in the background. Smooth and harmonious with supple tannins, snappy acidity and moderate persistence on the finish.
