The wine is cherry centric which, given the name, is no surprise. Flavors of crushed cherries, spice, sassafras and sandalwood in a medium to full-bodied style with complimentary oak and good staying power on the finish. Structurally firm but proportional to the fruit extract creating an overall impression of balance. Packs a little heat on the finish as it warms in the glass. Good. 2008 Cherry Pie Stanly Ranch Napa Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., $45. Great label. · Very shy fruit on the nose with prominent scents of oak, pine pitch and varnish. Hearty and full-flavored with copious amounts of black cherry and black raspberry essence set off by brown spice and oak. Generous and fruity rather than classy or complex. 2007 Merryvale Stanly Ranch Estate Carneros Pinot Noir 14.8% alc., $45. Sourced from favorite blocks of the sustainably-farmed estate vineyard on the historic Stanly Ranch. · Fresh and vibrant aromas of summer cherries and berries with complimentary oak spice. Mediumweighted flavors of earth and mineral-dusted black cherries with an echo of oak char in the background. Very smoothly textured with dry, ripe tannins. 2006 Coho Stanly Ranch Los Carneros Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., 483 cases, $30. · Vivid black cherry aromas with faint smoke in the background. Slightly confected cherry and cranberry flavors with a little oak on the edge. A very smooth texture, gossamer tannins and bright acidity on the finish make for easy drinking. 2006 Saintsbury Stanly Ranch Vineyard Carneros Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., 495 cases, $45. Dijon 667 (65%) and 115 (35%). 4-5 day cold soak, 11-14 days total maceration varying with lots, 11 months in 40% new Francois Frères and Taransaud (same barrels used on all Saintsbury Pinot Noirs) oak barrels. Saintsbury has purchased fruit from the historic Stanly Ranch since 1984 and this vineyard has been a significant source for the Carneros Pinot Noir and Reserve Pinot Noir bottlings. The current Dijon 115, 667, and 777 and Pommard clones were planted in 2001 with modernization of the vineyard including spacing and vertical trellising. · Bright red cherry and herb garden with a hint of spice and oak on the nose. Light and elegant in the mouth, flavors of dried cherry, wild berries, and savory herbs are wrapped in relatively soft tannins. 2005 Green Truck Cellars Napa Valley Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., 600 cases, $38 (sold out on website). Aged in 80% new French and 20% new Hungarian oak in caves for one year. · A nice cherry core with toasty oak, spice and earthiness in both the nose and on the palate. 2004 Green Truck Cellars Napa Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., 650 cases, $36. Three vineyards (Nord, Suscol Ridge, Stanly Ranch) and four clones. · Terrific nose of ripe berry jam and Asian spices. Lovely berry fruit in the mouth which is clean, lush and spicy. Everything is working beautifully in harmony, with a deft touch of oak and refreshing acidity on the finish. 2004 Saintsbury Stanly Ranch Carneros Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 4,560 cases, $45. Stanly Ranch Vineyard was originally owned in the 1950s by Louis Martini and the Wente family. It was here that the historic clonal trials of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were carried out that became the source of Martini and Wente clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that are widely planted in California today. In 2001, the vineyard underwent a modernization, with planting of modern clones, tighter spacing, and vertical trellising. Saintsbury has been sourcing grapes from Stanly Ranch since 1984 and Stanly Ranch grapes have formed the foundation of the Carneros and Reserve bottlings in the past. Saintsbury gets to “cherry-pick” the best vines. This Pinot contains 667 clone only. · A very nicely crafted Pinot with intriguing aromas of dark cherries, browned toast, and anise duplicated in the flavors.
