Composed of a variety of blocks containing newer and older vines. · Nicely scented with aromas of dark strawberry, blueberry, plum and spice. Gentle in the mouth with a light to mid weight core of red and purple berries with a touch of spice, a little smokiness, and a savory herbal thread. Forward drinking, with exquisite balance . 2016 Broadley Vineyards Open Claim Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., 50 cases, $35. 100% Pommard clone. Fermented in small open-top French oak wood fermenter for 14-21 days. Aged 12 months in neutral French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of Marionberry, black cherry, spice, dried herbs and barrique. Light to mid weight and quite sleek and demurely satisfying, with flavors of purple berry and black cherry fruit. Welcoming and easy going now with minimal tannins. Score: 90. 2015 Broadley Vineyards Claudia’s Choice Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 350 cases, $50. Wine named for Broadley Vineyards co-founder Claudia Broadley. Pommard and Wädenswil clones. 70% whole cluster. Wild yeast fermentation in two 3-ton open-top oak fermenters for 14 to 21 days. Starting with pump overs and then two punch downs per day. Aged 14-18 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Lovely aromas of fresh dark fruits and spice although a bit tight. Delicious essence of blue and black fruit mix with a hint of dark chocolate. Firm but mature tannins conceal the fruit at this early stage. 2015 Broadley Vineyards Jessica Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 250 cases, $50. Wine is named for Morgan Broadley’s wife and partner in Broadley Vineyards. This wine is produced each year from the same Dijon clone 667 and 115 section on the estate vineyard surrounding the Broadley’s home. 80% whole cluster. Wild yeast fermentation in a 5-ton Seguin Moreau open-top wood fermenter for 14 to 21 days. Starting with pump overs and then two punch downs a day. Aged 14-18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Shy but pleasant aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and walnut. Silky in the mouth with a vivacious core of dark fruits that really grab your attention and hold on. The wine is boldly structured with tannins and finishes with intensity and purpose. 2015 Broadley Vineyards Marcile Lorraine Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 150 cases, $50. Named for founder Craig Broadley’s mother. Produced each year from the same block of old vine Pinot Noir. A blend of Pommard and clone 115. 50% whole cluster. Wild yeast, cooler fermentation in 1.5-ton open-top oak fermenter for 14 to 21 days. Starting with pump overs and then two punch downs per day. Aged 14-18 months in tighter-grained, low toast French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Alluring aromas of darker fruits, particular black cherry, along with scents of spice and underbrush. Luscious and giving and rather precocious with a mid weight core of juicy purple and black fruits backed by energetic acidity and well proportioned tannins. Drink this one while you wait on Jessica. 2014 Broadley Vineyards Estate Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 800 cases, $30. A blend of Pommard, Dijon 115, 667, and 777, and Wädenswil clones from various blocks including the oldest planted in 1981. 90% de-stemmed, wild yeast fermentation in open-top fermenters, aged 12 months in Francois Frères French oak barrels, 15% new and balance 1 to 2-year-old. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Hi-tone aromas of blueberry, black raspberry, spice and iron set the stage for the delicious core of well-spiced cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Structured, but balanced, with a satiny texture and a finish that clings to the palate for what seems like a minute. The most gracious wine tasted here from Broadley blessed with a grand cru finish. 2014 Broadley Vineyards Claudia's Choice Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 350 cases, $50. Estate grown and bottled. Named for Broadley Vineyards co-founder Claudia Broadley. Sourced from a distinct block of the estate vineyard that tends to ripen later and often sets smaller clusters. The result is a big, dark, complex wine. The blend is primarily Pommard clone with some Wädenswil. Wild yeast fermentation. Aged 14-18 months in 40% new and the balance neutral French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color and very bright in the glass. Somewhat moody, with aromas of earthy dark cherry lead to a satisfying mid weight palate of blueberry and black cherry fruit flavors. Very generous, with a silky texture and a saturating fruit driven finish offering a cascade of fruit. 2014 Broadley Vineyards Marcile Lorraine Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 150 cases, $50. Estate grown and bottled. · Named for founder Craig Broadley’s mother, this wine is produced each year from the same distinctive block of old vine Pinot Noir. A cooler fermentation, tighter-grained wood, and low toast barrels are used in production. A blend of Wädenswil and Pommard with the majority Wädenswil. Wild yeast fermentation in open-top oak fermenter for 14-21 days. Aged 14-18 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and the balance neutral. Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose offers primarily oak scents with added aromas of ripe cherry, earth and stem. The mid weight plus core of black raspberry fruit is opulent and layered, framed by rigorous tannins and silky acidity. The fruit has that old vine tenacity. Impressive balance and appeal but rather reticent at this stage, finishing with a remarkably long finish. The wine may warrant a higher score after more time in the cellar. Score: 93. 2012 Broadley Vineyards Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., $28. · Dark violet color in the glass. Brooding aromas of dark cherries and berries with a faint note of anise and vanilla. Rich, deep and concentrated with a hedonistic core of sweet black raspberry, cassis, and spiced plum flavors with a shadow of oak in the background. Matching tannins and a generous fruit-filled finish complete the picture. Still very young and slightly awkward, becoming more expressive and refined with time in the glass. From a section of the vineyard that ripens later and sets smaller clusters. Pommard and Wädenswil clones. 40% whole cluster. Wild yeast fermentation. Aged 14-18 months in 40% new French oak barrels. The wine is meant to display a big, complex character. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Shy aromas of plum and boysenberry lead to a full-bodied explosion of luscious purple and black fruit flavors spiced with Coca-Cola, and backed by husky tannins. A prodigious wine with serious extract and finishing power. Similar the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle with high extraction and healthy tannins. 2012 Broadley Vineyards Jessica Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.7% alc., 250 cases, $50. Named after Jessica Broadley, Morgan Broadley’s spouse and partner in Broadley Vineyards. Clones 667 and 115. 80% whole cluster. Wild yeast fermentation. Aged 14-18 months in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Plentiful fruit in this wine that offers scents of black cherry reduction sauce and blackberry jam, and intense, sappy flavors of purple and black fruits. There is a complimentary hint of spice and oak and a slight floral undertone from the whole cluster inclusion. The tannins are substantial but proportional to the fruit load creating balance. This wine is not for the timid, but it is nicely composed and will thoroughly satisfy those seeking out a full-throttle Pinot Noir with whole cluster embellishments. Score: 90-91. 2011 Broadley Vineyards Claudia’s Choice Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.7% alc., $50. Sourced from 7 acres of northeast-facing vines planted mid slope on the estate. · Light reddish purple color in the glass. Fruity aromas of red cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Light in weight with juicy cherry flavor dominated by smoky, tobacco oak. The oak simply overwhelms the delicate red fruit core. There is also a green, vegetal thread in the background. 2010 Horsetail Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., 150 cases, $28. Sourced from Zena Crown, Broadley and Sunny Mountain vineyards. 100% destemmed. Aged in 60% new Francois Frères and Taransaud French oak barrels for 14 months. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, oak, biscuit (yeasty), stem and coffee becoming more pronounced the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Soft in the mouth with vibrant acidity, featuring cherry and raspberry fruit with a hint of tarry, coffee-scented oak in the background. A racy wine for early drinking. Decent. 2005 Broadley Vineyards Claudia’s Choice Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $40. A family- owned and worked winery. This wine comes from a 7 acre distinct block of the estate vineyard. · Black cherries, Asian 5 spice and pencil shavings make up an interesting nose. 2005 Broadley Shea Vineyard Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $45. Broadley is a family-owned winery in Monroe in the southern Willamette Valley whose first release was in 1988. Sourced from old vines. · This wine showed more the redder fruit profile of this vineyard. Lightest in color and structure of all of the Shea Vineyard wines, with a noticeable brisk acidity and citrus kick on the backend. While the Auteur is more a sipping wine, this is more a table wine.
