A small winery founded in 1998 on a historic site next to Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The owners, Bradley Brown (also the winemaker) and his sister Wendy Brown, have restored this historic vineyard site using modern viticultural methods. The Estate Vineyard was planted in 2000 on a steep hillside where French immigrants once grew wine grapes over 100 years ago. Over 90% of the estate is being preserved in its natural state. A new winery was completed in 2003 on the site of the original 1890s house and winery structure which burned downed in the 1970s.
The Estate Vineyard now includes 2 acres of Pinot Noir. Both Swan and Mt. Eden selections were budded over some of the Syrah, with the first harvest in 2016. The Estate Vineyard is CCOF Certified Organic.
The wines are vinfied in small lots using significant (often 100%) whole cluster fermentation. Native yeasts, absolutely no additions other than SO2 after secondary fermentation is completed, and minimal intervention.
Big Basin offers estate grown Syrah and other Rhone reds from estate vineyards and several other vineyard sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Big Basin also specializes in estate grown Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir sourced from Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards, including Alfaro Family Vineyard, Lester Family Vineyard, Woodruff Family Vineyard, Coast Grade Vineyard and Coastview Vineyard.
The wines are sold primarily through a mailing list, a Wine Club and the website. Tasting is available at the winery's Saratoga Tasting Room at 14598 Big Basin Way Thursday-Monday. Tastings at the Estate Vineyard and winery are available Saturdays from April-September.
2018 Big Basin Vineyards Dune & Mountain Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 270 cases, $39. Sourced from two vineyards: Olson Vineyard located on ancient sandy dunes near Monterey Bay at 180 feet elevation and Coastview Vineyard planted in decomposed granite on a mountain top at 2200 feet elevation. Vine age 19 years. Clones 114, 115, 667 and 777. 100% whole cluster, native fermentation, aged 11 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Welcoming nose replete with whole cluster notes of pine sap and burnt tobacco complimenting aromas of black cherry and nutty oak. Earthkissed black cherry fruit infuses the mid weight core that is graced by exotic spices. The tannins are modest leaving the wine quite agreeable. The finish is somewhat abbreviated but juicy. 2017 Big Basin Dune and Mountain Monterey County Pinot Noir
12.8% alc., 440 cases, $36. Release January 2019. Grapes were sourced from Olson Vineyard located just off Monterey Bay planted in ancient sand dunes, and Coastview Vineyard situated at 2200 feet elevation in the Gabilan Mountains overlooking Monterey Bay and planted in decomposed granite. Vine age is 18 years. Clones are Dijon 114, 115, 667, 777, and Pisoni and Swan selections. 95% whole cluster, native yeast, aged 11 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Conspicuous aromas of Maraschino cherry, burnt tobacco, and BBQ spice rub. Very sleek in the mouth in a mid weight style, with flavors of black cherry and tobacco and an earthy vibe. A bit of astringent tannin is apparent upon opening, but nearly resolves when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle. The fruit is quite ebullient and propels a lengthy finish. 2017 Big Basin Vineyards Coastview Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., 290 cases, $55. Vine age 19 years. Clones 113, 114, 115, 667, 777, and Swan and “Pisoni” selections. 75% whole cluster, native fermentation. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Leading off are aromas of candied cherry, vanilla and earthy flora. Charming and mouth filling on the palate featuring earth-kissed dark red fruits framed by plush, suede tannins and finishing with both power and length. 2017 Big Basin Vineyards Lester Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 355 cases, $55. Vines planted in sandy clay loam and 19 years of age. Clones are 37 and 667 with a Swan selection. 100% whole cluster, native fermentation. Aged 17 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Moderate garnet color in the glass. Generous aromas of cherry, flora and burnt tobacco. A robust offering in a mid weight plus style, featuring an array of red and purple fruit flavors complimented by hints of tobacco and earth. Sleek in the mouth with refined tannins. A wine with power in a velvet fist. The finish is clean but not overly lengthy. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the intoxicating cherry aromas soared and the finish had taken on more length. · Score: 93. 2017 Big Basin Alfaro Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 155 cases, $60 (magnums $129). Winemaker Bradley Brown incorporates a significant amount of whole cluster in his fermentations and this beauty was made with the full monty - 100% whole cluster. 18-year-old vines. Clones 115, 667 and 777. Native primary and malolactic fermentations. Aged 17 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered and finished under NormaCork without risk of cork taint. This wine is the standout among the 2017 Big Basin offerings. · Lovely aromas of black cherry compote, spice and burnt tobacco. Sterling balance with plenty of upfront pleasure, packing good ripeness at a modest ABV. Luscious black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors and a hint of turmeric spice. Even better when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle. 94-95 score range. Note: the wine is available through the winery’s website store. 2017 Big Basin Ferrari Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.2% alc., 200 cases, $60. 100% whole cluster native primary fermentation, and aged 17 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is aloof but pleasant with aromas of black cherry, rose petal and spice. Mid weight plus in style featuring darker cherry, strawberry, raspberry and boysenberry fruit flavors. More ripeness and intensity than the 2015 vintage. The tannins are modest at this point and the finish is generously fruited and lengthy. 2017 Big Basin Vineyards Old Corral Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.2% alc., 140 cases, $65. Vine age 11-12 years. Clone 37 (Mt Eden) and a Swan selection. 100% whole cluster, native fermentation. Aged 17 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose is complex and sexy, offering aromas of cherry, red rose petal, cardamom spice and Juicy Fruit. Deep cherry flavor in a mid weight style with an earthy underpinning. Suave in the mouth with very finegrain tannins and an excellent acid underbelly. 2016 Big Basin Coastview Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.0% alc., 335 cases, $55. Release January 2019. Vineyard located between the Chalone AVA and the Mt. Harlan AVA in the Gabilan Mountains. Dijon clones 667, 777, 114 and 115, and Swan and Pisoni selections. One lot fermented 60% whole cluster and the rest 100% whole cluster. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 42% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The aromas of black cherry, purple grape, spice cabinet and mulch soar in this gifted wine. Black cherry and boysenberry fruit flavors flood the mouth with goodness. There is plenty of spice and smart oak to enhance the pleasure. The balance is spot-on with exquisitely integrated tannins, acidity and oak, the mouthfeel is sleek and polished, and the finish is uplifting and juicy. 2016 Big Basin Lester Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 414 cases, $55. Release November 2018. 18-year-old vines. Clones include Mt Eden (50%), 667 and a Swan selection. Harvest Brix 22.7º-23.0º and one lot 24.5º. Fermented 100% whole cluster, native yeast, and aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is replete with whole cluster goodness including aromas of dark cherry, exotic spices, burnt pipe tobacco and compost. Heady fruits including black cherry, boysenberry and blackberry are accented with redeeming notes of spice and tobacco, and framed by silky and supple tannins. The mouthfeel is comforting, oak is judiciously integrated, and the juicy, long finish leaves quite a gratifying impression. 13.3% alc., 414 cases, $55. Clone 667 and a Swan selection. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 100% whole cluster fermented. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Whole cluster driven aromas of burnt tobacco, spice and purple fruits. Simply a great whole cluster fermented wine with purple berry and purple plum fruits that make a big impact on the palate and finish. Slightly smoky, with a grilled meat note. Noticeable, but not intrusive tannins and a delightful, sweet cherry finish. Still a youngster and surely a 15-year wine. (Reviewed in 2018 with the same score) Score: 94. 2016 Big Basin Alfaro Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 155 cases, $60. Released September 2018. Clones 667, 777 and 115. 17-year-old vines. Harvest Brix 23.3º-23.6º. Fermented 100% whole cluster, native yeast, and aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. No additions beyond S02 after malolactic was completed in barrel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Engaging nose offering aromas of darker berry and cherry, exotic spices, oak sawdust and a hint of fresh leafy greens. Up-front opulent black raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors underpinned by muscular tannins. Sheer beauty of fruit with welcome uplifting acidity and a notably long finish. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the imposing tannins had mollified. This wine will benefit from more time in the cellar. Score: 92. Harvest Brix about 22.6º (Mt Eden clone) and 23.0º (Swan selection). 100% whole cluster, native yeast, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light ruby red color in the glass. Persistent aromatic joy featuring scents of cherry, ripe cranberry, spice, fertile earth and old wood. Light to mid weight in style, offering flavors of red fruits , baking spices and tobacco. A woodiness pervades the flavor and aromatic profile. Clones 667, 777, 113, 114, 115, Swan and Pisoni. One lot fermented 33% whole cluster and the other 75% whole cluster. Native fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Seductive aromas that build over time in the glass including back cherry, spice, floral goodness, pipe smoke and fresh turned earth. Good richness in a mid weight plus style, with flavors of earth-kissed boysenberry and blackberry fruits with a riff of tobacco, toast and spice in the background. 13.5% alc., 70 cases, $55. Release April 2018. 7-year-old vines planted at 1,240-1340 feet elevation. Pommard and “828” clones planted in sandy loam over limestone base rock. Extensive shatter resulted in a very small harvest. The majority of grapes were de-stemmed since the clusters were sparse and contained some green shot berries that were eliminated. 25% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Highly aromatic, with hi-tone scents of cherry, rose petal, burnt tobacco and savory herbs. Light to mid weight in style, noticeably fresh and juicy, with flavors of red cherry and cranberry and a hint of tobacco framed by frisky acidity. The most vibrant and juicy wine in the 2015 lineup. Mt Eden, 115 and 667 clones. 70% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels.. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Very reserved and savory nose, offering aromas of earthy flora, vegetal juice and seasoned oak. Mid weight flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and burnt tobacco emerge royally over time in the glass. Silky in the mouth with gentle tannins and a quenching finish. Clones 115, 667 and 777. 100% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Enveloping aromas of blackberry, cassis, potpourri, fertile earth and ash. Satiny, smooth and flowing on the palate, with impressive richness that fills every nook and cranny in the mouth with serious intent. The mid weight flavors of purple grapes, blackberry, pomegranate, tea and tobacco really saturate the finish. Beautifully balanced, this wine’s mouthfeel is highly seductive. 2015 Big Basin Vineyards Woodruff Family Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
13.0% alc., 80 cases, $65. Release April 2018. About 38-year-old vines planted at 436 to 515 feet elevation in sandy loam. Unknown heritage selection. 100% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of underbrush, mulch and flower blossom persist in the glass. Quite restrained initially with a primarily savory undergrowth and earth character. When tasted later in the day from a previously opened bottle, this wine showed the most dramatic change, offering appealing mid weight flavors of blueberry, boysenberry, black cherry and spice.The silken mouthfeel attracts. Engaging aromas of cherry, rose petal, burnt tobacco and cardamom spice. Mouthwatering cherry core framed by very fine tannins. 2014 Big Basin Vineyards Coast Grade Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
12.8% alc., 95 cases, allocated to mailing list. This vineyard, owned and farmed by multi-generation Santa Cruz Mountains farmer Jim Beuregard, is located in Bonny Doon, a few miles north of Santa Cruz, 3 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean at 1,300 feet elevation. A limestone quarry across the street hints at the geology below the vineyard surface (sandy loam over limestone base rock). Clone 115, six years of age. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Intoxicating aromas of cherry, spice, pine sap, rose petal and burnt tobacco. Noticeable mid palate presence of middleweight cherry and red currant fruit flavors framed by modest tannins and a hint of oak. Juicy, with plenty of sweet red fruit tang, an overlay of stem and forest floor, intriguing textural interest, and a long finish. 2014 Big Basin Vineyards Coastview Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.6% alc., 100 cases, Allocated to mailing list. Vineyard is located in the Gabilan Mountains on the east side of the Salinas Valley, six miles south of Calera’s Mount Harlan AVA. Decomposed quartz and limestone over base rock. The vines, perched at 2,200 to 2,400 feet elevation, are 17 years old. Dijon 113, 114, 115, 667, 777, Pisoni and Swan selection. Vines are farmed organically. Aged 15 months in 75% new French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Seductive aromas of black cherry, cardamom spice, and a hint of stem. Light to mid weight in style, yet highly flavorful, with well ripened flavors of plum, cherry and black raspberry accented with spice and forest floor. Intense mid palate audacity, carrying over to a generous cherry-driven finish. While the juicy acidity is nicely integrated, the tannins are a bit unwieldy at present (but will moderate with more time in bottle). The intriguing texture is hard to adequately describe. 2014 Big Basin Vineyards Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.0% alc., 420 cases, $36. Release spring 2016. A combination of Coastview and Olson vineyards. Clones are 114, 115, 667, 777 and Swan selection. Harvest Brix 22º-23º. 15-year-old vines. 85% whole cluster, native yeast fermentation. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is a little more savory than fruity, offering aromas of cherry, spice, pine sap and rose petal. The light to mid weight core of cherry and spice flavors is lifted by good tension and supported by matching tannins. A silky texture adds to the enjoyment. 2014 Big Basin Lester Family Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
13.0% alc., 325 cases, $48. Clones 115, 667 and Mt. Eden. 100% whole cluster fermented. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Whole cluster-inspired aromas of dark red cherry, herbal tea and sweet pipe smoke. Nicely composed, with good harmony and a sleek, polished mouthfeel. Tannins are in check. 13.0% alc., 326 cases, $48. Very good stem lignification allowed 100% whole clusters. Tremendous color and flavor at low sugar levels. 16-year-old vines planted to Mt. Eden, 115 and 667. Soils are sandy loam over sedimentary base rock. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. This is a glorious wine in all respects. The whole cluster dimension is perfectly complimentary in this wine. Soaring aromas of cherry, rose petal and spice are harmonious. Silky in the mouth, with a deep spice-enhanced cherry and raspberry fruit flavor. Vibrant and refreshing, this wine soothes rather than attacks the palate. Very comforting with impeccable balance and a bombastic cherry finish. Even better when tasted two days later from a previously opened and recorked bottle. In one word, Wow! This wine really emotes. Aromas of cherry, burnt tobacco, rose petal and spice pick up exuberance over time in the glass. Noticeable stem inclusion character which tended to integrate when tasted two days later from an opened bottle. Mid weight flavors of cherry and red berry with savory notes of burnt tobacco, spice and garden herbs. Silky in the mouth, with invisible tannins, admirable balance and some finishing intensity. A stunning modestly priced offering sourced from the winery’s single vineyard sources in Corralitos and Bonny Doon (Lester Family and Coast Grade) 50% whole cluster, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 15% new. Unfined and unfiltered. · The whole cluster goodness makes an impression on the nose with plenty of rose petal and spice aromas enhancing the red berry fruit. 2013 Big Basin Vineyards Coastview Vineyard Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.6% alc., 240 cases, $44. Released February 2016. This vineyard is located in the Gabilan Mountains with a commanding view of the Salinas Valley. Soils are nearly identical to Calera’s famous Mt. Harlan vineyards a few miles to the North. Owner John Allen farms the vineyard, planted in 1999, organically. 17-year-old vines planted at 2200 feet elevation in soils of decomposed quartz and granite over base rock with veins of limestone. Clones are 113, 114, 115, 667, 777 and Pisoni selection. 30% whole cluster, (first lot picked was 100% de-stemmed, the secon lot included 56% whole clusters, and the third picked lot 26% whole clusters), whole berry and native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Clean aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and earthy flora hold up nicely over time in the glass. Lovely mid weight plus flavors of black cherry and black raspberry with a deft touch of oak in the background. Expansive in the mouth, with remarkable length and fruit intensity on the finish. The tannins are fine grain and easy going making the wine quite approachable, but the wine should pick up more nuance with additional time in bottle. Score: 90-91. This feature vineyard consists of 12 acres of Pinot Noir on Pleasant Valley Road in Corralitos. The vineyard is farmed by noted viticulturist Prudy Foxx: no herbicides, deficit watering and careful canopy management. Clones are Mt Eden (37), 115 and 667. 76% whole cluster (varying percentages from 100% to 57%), whole berry and native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is intoxicating with its blend of dark red cherry and berry, exotic spice, dark rose petal and pine sap aromas. Fans of whole cluster inclusion will go ga-ga over this wine with its array of luscious dark red and black cherry fruit flavors, plenty of spice, a hint of tobacco and savory tea, and a floral note in the background. The wine has impressive harmony with a welcome acid lift that brightens the experience. Add a dreamy texture and you have a compelling wine that is what the French like to call bien élevé. The nose elevates over time in the glass, offering a lovely perfume of cherry, cranberry, dried rose petal and dried herbs. A mix of red fruits fills the mouth on entry, showing good richness on the mid palate, and finishing with a sprightly mix of red berries, whole cluster spice and a hint of oak. Dry-farmed vines in Corralitos. Yield about 2 tons per acre. 75% whole cluster (one lot with 100% whole clusters and the other 42% whole clusters), whole berry and native yeast fermentation. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Lovely perfume of red and blue berries, spice and rose petal. On entry, the wine is exotically spiced with a delicious complement of red berry and cherry fruit flavors embellished with salient but not overbearing whole cluster goodness. Plenty of nuance in this wine such as notes of savory herbs and sweet smoke, and more subtleties will emerge over time. Hints of oak vanillin and herbs add interest. Nicely composed, offering pliant tannins, good acidity and some length on the finish. Smoothly textured making for good drinking now, but the wine was better the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle indicating it will improve with further cellaring. This vineyard is located in the Corralitos area at the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains chain and was planted in 1988. 30% whole cluster, whole berry, indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged for 14 months in 66% new French oak barrels. Unfined, unfiltered. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. The wine is young and tight, offering little fruit on the nose at present. There is some charming dark red berry fruit evident that is nicely framed by oak and persists on the soft finish. The mouth feel is smooth and seamless. I like this wine for its finesse and potential and would like to revisit this wine after a year in the cellar.
