David Hirsch was one of the first visionaries to plant Pinot Noir on the true Sonoma Coast and now farms 68 acres of Pinot Noir and 4 acres of Chardonnay on his 1,100-acre property in Cazadero. Initially, he moved to the area to escape urban life and considered farming trees in an effort to reforest a part of Sonoma's far coast where most of the timber had been decimated by the rebuilding of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. A friend, Jim Beauregard, a winegrower in the Santa Cruz Mountains, suggested the ridges would be perfect for growing Pinot Noir, and instead of trees, Hirsch planted two acres of Pinot Noir and Riesling in 1980. Hirsch had always been a passionate Burgundy drinker, so planting Pinot Noir made sense.
Additional plantings followed from 1990 through 1995, with the most recent vines established in 2002 bringing the total to 68 acres: 3.9 acres of Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Noir. Although 68 acres of vines, Hirsch Vineyard is divided into 60 different parcels that are all managed differently and ultimately vinified separately both by Hirsch and the wineries that source grapes from this vineyard. The organic block Hirsch farmed for Lemon proved so successful, Hirsch eventually converted the entire vineyard to biodynamic viticulture by 2014 (although not certified).
A winery was built in 2002 in an old sheep-bearing barn on the property, and Hirsch began bottling some of their own production. Several notable winemakers have worked here, the most current being Ross Cobb of Cobb Wines. A second label, The Bohan-Dillon, is a combination of estate and purchased grapes and is also fine and less expensive. Hirsch supplies fruit to many prominent California (and at times even Oregon) wineries including Littorai, Williams Selyem, Faille, and Siduri, who all bottle Hirsch Vineyard designates.
The Hirsch's neighbors, the Bohan family, were the original growers in the region. They settled in 1947, grew a number of crops, and against the advice of University of California at Davis and others, planted grapes in 1972. Cazadero has an interesting history. George S. Montgomery, a wealthy San Franciscan bought a tiny resort town for hunters called Ingrams in 1888 and promptly re-branded it Cazadero. Montgomery was a two- fisted drinking Bohemian Club member and a man for good times until 1890 when be became a good Christian. He decreed that Cazadero would be an ideal temperance town.
Beginning in 2011, Hirsch is gradually converting the entire property to biodynamics with Ted Lemon and Andrew Lorand consulting on the conversion. Since 2011, the property is part of the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA.
Several winemakers have been directing production at Hirsch Vineyards. In late 2015, Anthony Filiberti, who previously made wine at Knez in Anderson Valley, replaced Ross Cobb who made the wines at Hirsch from 2010 through the 2015 harvest.
Hirsch produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under the Hirsch Vineyards label. Production is 5,500 cases annually, 92% of which is estate grown. For years Hirsch sold grapes to other producers, but in recent years more and more of the grapes are kept for the estate wine program. The Hirsch Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are highly sought after.
When Ross Cobb came on board, Hirsch began parsing some of the West Ridge and East Ridge blocks into separate wines. More recently, a Block 8 wine debuted with the 2011 vintage, and 2014 brought a Raschen Ridge micro bottling form two rocky, high-elevation blocks where the East and West ridges meet.
Tours and tasting are by appointment (plan on a full day if driving from more populated areas of Sonoma and try to time your visit when it isn’t raining - Cazadero receives 80 inches of the wet stuff each year). Every true pinotphile should make the pilgrimage some time in their life. The wines are sold through a mailing list and retail distribution. David's daughter, Jasmine, started at the winery with the 2008 vintage, helps out in the vineyard and cellar, but is primarily a spokesperson for Hirsch Vineyard and travels handling sales and marketing. David's wife, Marie, designs the labels.
Total annual production of estate grown wine is 7,360 cases annually.

wine reflects the full spectrum of the vineyard. The label depicts Bobo the cat who prowls the vineyard.

Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Lovely aromas of strawberry, cherry, underbrush, sandalwood and
vanilla mocha arrive over time in the glass. Lighter in weight, with juicy flavors of strawberry, red cherry and
cranberry. Easy to cozy up to with gentle tannins, a hint of complimentary oak and a modest, but spirited finish.

the glass. Complex nose exhibiting aromas of raspberry coulis, black cherry cola, rose petal, earthy flora and
See’s dark chocolate. Very clean, balanced and approachable in a mid-weight style with flavors of boysenberry
and black raspberry accented with a herbal thread in the background, all entwined with modest tannins. The
wine is a bit shallow on the mid-palate and the lacks some length on the purple berry driven finish.

Raschen (1834-1937) was a painter of the American West and lived on the land that is now Hirsch Vineyards.
This block is at the vineyard's highest elevation.

Moderate garnet color in the glass. Attractive aromas of black
cherry, dark chocolate and male sweat. Polished and balanced in a mid-weight style, with an array of
interesting flavors including black cherry, pomegranate, exotic spice, earth and toast. Nicely composed with
supportive tannins and giving at this stage.

2018 Hirsch Vineyards East Ridge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
12.5% alc., 56 cases, $85.. This block is
sheltered from the coastal fog. The vines are stressed by phylloxera and grow in shallow soils resulting in very
low yields. A cellar worthy , masculine expression of the vineyard.

Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. A
dark fruit profile dominates the nose and palate. The wine is uniquely rustic, animale and gutsy with a husky
tannic backbone that keeps the fruit in line.Very sleek and silky in texture with a finish that just won't quit. A
very interesting and distinctive wine that I thoroughly enjoyed.

from the most evocative and expressive vineyard parcels.

Moderate garnet color in the glass. The aromas
have a serious tone and include blueberry, blackberry and Asian five spice. A hi-collar, connoisseur's wine with
delicious flavors of blueberry and boysenberry backed by a tannic structure that suggests age ability. Very
seamless in character, offering more nuance over time. I liked it the more I tasted it. When tasted the following
day from a previously opened bottle, it brought chills like hearing the Star Spangled Banner at a sporting
event.This beauty will reward cellaring and most certainly is a 20-year wine.

This block is
located on rolling hills of the westerly part of the vineyard. Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The
aromas have a comforting, peaceful tone including red cherry and peppery herbs. Rather delicate and elegant
with red cherry and raspberry flavors underlain with a savory herbal thread. Very bright and agreeable, yet
showing enough chewy tannin to align the fruit.

Grown, produced and bottled by Hirsch Vineyards, Cazedero, CA.. Low yields in 2015 produced only 1.3 tons
per acre.

Light golden yellow color in the glass. Very shy aromas of lemon oil, pineapple and ripe apple lead to
a moderately rich palate of lemon, pear and green apple flavors, infused with a steely bite of acidity. A bit too
austere and hi-strung for my taste and a deviation from the style of this Chardonnay in the past.

Fault lies 2.5 miles from Hirsch Vineyards and defines the soils, topography and climate of the site.

red color in the glass. Aromas of blueberries, under brush and oak spice lead off. Light in weight, with delicate
and forward flavors of red cherry, cranberry, raspberry, red licorice and dried herbs. Nicely balanced, with
modest tannins and a red-fruited finish. A very elegant offering. A little more expressive when tasted the next
day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle.

personality. The site contains more iron oxide soil unique within Hirsch
Vineyards. David Hirsch calls it his Grand Cru block.

garnet color in the glass. The fruit in this wine is riper and this wine
shows the most grace and charm. Aromas of muddled black cherry, Dr.
Pepper and mocha. Mid weight, earthy flavors of purple berries are
framed by defined tannins for the long term. Smooth and gracious on the
palate, with impeccable balance and a thread of “minerality” that adds
appeal.

very best barrels from the three oldest blocks on the ridge.

Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Upon
opening the nose is quite primary. The following day the nose remained shy but better, offering aromas of
purple berries and a hint of oak. A more masculine wine, with a firm tannic backbone, and mid weight flavors of
purple and black fruits. Quite sappy and intense and long in the mouth, but still withdrawn. Much more
expressive when tasted the following day showing an intense attack and mid palate presence. A little green,
unripe character shows in the background.

Raschen (1854-1937) was a painter of the American West and lived on a ranch that is now Hirsch Vineyards.
From the highest elevation of the vineyards with merging heat and coolness, uplifting and erosion.

Moderately
light garnet color in the glass. Inviting aromas of dark pie cherries, underbrush and fertile earth. Plenty of attack
and intensity to satisfy, with flavors of blueberry, black cherry and Damsel plum. More savory and earthy than
fruity with temperate tannins and a finish of exceptional length. The long finish really stood out when the wine
was tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle.

striking when the wine was tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle.

spice. Discreetly concentrated, earth-kissed flavors of blueberry and cherry with an expansive mouthfeel.
There is a note of iron and green pepper as well. Inviting harmony, with firm but integrated tannins, a silky
texture, and a modestly generous finish.

precocious wine at an exceptional price.

Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed
with aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, stem and toasty oak. A lightly weighted wine featuring blue and purple
fruit flavors framed by vivid acidity creating a slightly tart character. The wine leans to delicacy with a
somewhat hollow mid palate, featuring balanced tannins, oak seasoning in the background and a soprano
finish.

in the glass. The wine aims to please upon opening, offering hi-tone scents of lemon curd, grilled pineapple
and poached pear. The fruit really speaks in this harmonious wine, with delicious flavors of lemon, pear and
apple accented with a saline note. Slightly creamy on the palate, with juicy acidity and beautiful integration of
oak. Very gracious and classy.

2013 Hirsch Vineyards Block 8 Estate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
12.8% alc., pH 3.58, 336 cases, TA 0.58, $85 (sold out). Released
January 26, 2016, highly allocated. David Hirsch considers this his grand
cru parcel. This block was planted in 1993 to Pommard and Wädenswil
clones. Aged in 100% French oak barrels, 35% new.

Moderate reddish
purple color in the glass. Very shy, but pleasant aromas of plum sauce,
black cherry pie and floral bouquet. Elegant and charming, with flavors of
black raspberry, black cherry and spice, with a noticeable iron riff. The
soft tannins are slightly astringent. This wine exhibits the longest finish of
the 2013 Hirsch Pinot Noirs making it most appealing. When tasted the
following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine
was more enthralling and the finish continued to define its excellence.

from the warmest part of the vineyard and is the most masculine expression of the Hirsch Vineyard. A selection
of the best barrels from the oldest blocks on East Ridge that is planted to Mt Eden, Swan and Pommard
clones.

Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose offers fresh aromas of black grape, black
cherry and tender oak. Light to mid weight in character, with a dark red fruit theme. Delicate, well balanced,
with a subtle oak overlay in the background, and a pleasing cherry finish. Relatively simple, I yearned for more
nuance.

styled wine with a fresh core of spiced black cherry fruit. More mouthful in this wine with excellent acid
integration. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the nose was more
expressive and the elegant, soft mouthfeel was apparent. Cellaring is advised.

reddish purple color in the glass. Upon pouring, aromas of oak-driven espresso and campfire overwhelm the
black cherry fruit. A little tight on the palate, offering a discreetly concentrated, juicy black cherry core with
noticeable intensity and finishing power. Very suave and silky. When tasted the following day from a previously
opened and re-corked bottle, the aromatics were more fruity and the wine was more flavorful with less evident
oak overlay.
Score: 89-90.

2012 Hirsch Vineyards Block 8 Sonoma Coast Estate Pinot Noir
13.4% alc., 290 cases, $85. Located on the West Ridge of
the vineyard, this section has iron oxide-laden soils that are
unique within the vineyard.

Moderate reddish purple color in the
glass. Demure aromas of red cherries and red berries and spice
lead to a delicious core of fresh, well-spiced cherry and
strawberry fruits that are framed by sublime tannins. A touch of
earthiness and oak seasoning adds interest. A complete wine that
emotes due to its texture, flavor and roundness. When tasted the
following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, this wine
continued to stand out, reminding me of a great Chambertain. The
vintner made a prudent decision to bottle this wine separately.
Score: 94-95.

2012 Hirsch Vineyards East Ridge Estate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

is a selection of the best barrels from the three oldest blocks on the ridge.

Moderate reddish purple color in the
glass. The nose is noticeably unique with a stony minerality evident accenting the fresh cherry fruit aromas. On
entry, the plum, cherry and berry assemblage explodes in the mouth and refuses to leave on the endless finish
which offers a wave of fruit and tannin. Oak is beautifully integrated. A masculine expression of the vineyard
but not in an extreme sense. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the
attack of succulent fruit is still engaging and the tannic backbone is still slightly daunting. Cellar this baby.
Score: 92-93.

raspberry fruit flavors with modest oak seasoning in the background. When tasted the following day from a
previously opened and re-corked bottle, the nose was slightly more inviting, and the palate was more giving
and pleasing.

selection of the oldest and most exceptional sections on the cool western ridge of Hirsch Vineyard.

reddish purple color in the glass. A bit tight on the nose, showing shy aromas of dark cherry and espresso.
More appealing in the mouth with redder-toned fruit, lacy tannins, and juicy acidity. Very smooth and graceful in
a feminine style, with oak intruding a bit on the fruit expression at this young age. When tasted the following
day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine still offered noticeable oak overlay on the nose
and palate bringing the delicate fruit core into subjugation.

Moderate garnet color in the
glass. Aromas of dark wild cherry sprinkled with herbs and flowers. The middleweight flavors of red cherry and
strawberry are annotated with spice, thyme and other dried herbs and a dusting of oak. The tannins have
completely faded and there is lip-smacking acidity at the end. Complex and savory rather than directly fruity.

fruit, with the balance from neighbors including Hellenthal, McDougall
and Nobles vineyards.

Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass.
Highly scented with aromas of black cherries, Hoison sauce, spicy
oak and rosebud. A lighter but tasty wine with straight forward flavors
of black cherries and blue and black berries complimented by cedary
oak. The tannins are nicely balanced, the wine is silky on the palate, and the
cherry really sings on the finish. Good.

straw color and clear in the glass. Very appealing aromas of crème brûlée, white peach, lemon drop and
brioche. Very clean and polished, with flavors of white stone fruits, apple and citrus, sporting a pleasing touch
of oak, and showing some aromatic intensity on the somewhat lengthy finish. Very good.

has fruit from 27 distinct farming blocks, more than any other wine made from the Hirsch Vineyard. Vines

color in the glass. Pure, clean aromas of blackberry jam, Hoison sauce, spice
and damp soil. More intensity and length here, with rich flavors of earth-kissed
purple and black fruits flooding the palate, complimented by a dusting of tannins and a bright spark of acidity. The wine finishes with an immensely satisfying finish that goes on and on.

crisp cherry and raspberry fruit. More citrus-driven acidity in this wine that offers very suave tannins and easy
accessibility. A more feminine wine, but like the San Andreas and East Ridge bottlings, a very long and
tantalizing finish.

pear, lemon curd, bark, roasted nuts and honey. Delicious spectrum of
flavors including pears, baked apples, and creme brulee with a striking aciddriven
minerality on the back end. Medium weighted richness with a very
smooth texture offering exceptional freshness and refreshing acidity. I have had
some stunning Chardonnays from the Sonoma Coast of late and this one may take the cake.

and Mt. Eden clones, this bottling is a selection of the very best barrels
from these old blocks. Aged 17 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Alluring aromas of black
cherries and spice. Impressive rush of earth bound black cherry and dark berry
fruit on the mid palate, persisting on the long and expressive finish. The mild,
sinewy tannins add support and well-honed acidity adds vibrancy. Plenty of
character in this wine and in my opinion, the best expression of Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir among the wines
tasted here. I had some wine left over after tasting the following day, my wife took the wine as a gift to her
hairdresser who loves Pinot Noir, but mistakenly left it in the trunk where it stayed for three days. When I
retrieved it, five days after opening, it was still fabulous! Built for the long haul and an exceptional Sonoma
Coast treasure.

composed of barrels that do not make the grade for the Estate label. None was produced in 2004 and
2005 due to low crop yields. Yields and tonnage in 2006 were very generous, exceeding all vintages
over the previous nine years. At least twice as much fruit was dropped in 2006 as harvested in 2005.
The bunches and berries were not unusually large, but very compact.

there is plenty of pleasure waiting to get out. Velvety soft in texture and beautifully crafted. A keeper.

More savory and earthy than fruity with temperate tannins and a finish of exceptional length. Very shy, but pleasant aromas of plum sauce, black cherry pie and floral bouquet. Elegant and charming, with flavors of black raspberry, black cherry and spice, with a noticeable iron riff. The soft tannins are slightly astringent. This wine exhibits the longest finish of the 2013 Hirsch Pinot Noirs making it most appealing. A touch of earthiness and oak seasoning adds interest. A complete wine that emotes due to its texture, flavor and roundness. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, this wine continued to stand out, reminding me of a great Chambertain. Delicious spectrum of flavors including pears, baked apples, and creme brulee with a striking aciddriven minerality on the back end. Dominated by Pommard and Mt. Eden clones, this bottling is a selection of the very best barrels from these old blocks. Aged 17 months in 35% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Alluring aromas of black cherries and spice. Impressive rush of earth bound black cherry and dark berry fruit on the mid palate, persisting on the long and expressive finish. The mild, sinewy tannins add support and well-honed acidity adds vibrancy. Plenty of character in this wine and in my opinion, the best expression of Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir among the wines tasted here. I had some wine left over after tasting the following day, my wife took the wine as a gift to her hairdresser who loves Pinot Noir, but mistakenly left it in the trunk where it stayed for three days. 14.6% alc., $30. This wine is composed of barrels that do not make the grade for the Estate label. None was produced in 2004 and 2005 due to low crop yields. Yields and tonnage in 2006 were very generous, exceeding all vintages over the previous nine years. At least twice as much fruit was dropped in 2006 as harvested in 2005. 2006 Hirsch Vineyards M Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.9% alc., 448 cases $50. The label says: “It is a Marvelous and Mellifluous Middle cuvee of our site of fruit from 22 blocks. A wine for grownups.” · The nose is flat and subdued initially but opens with swirling to aromas of deeply spiced cherries and roses with a whiff of alcohol. Highly structured and built for the long haul. Very earthy with notes of game and oak spice accentuating the black cherry fruit. 14.1% alc.. · Darkly colored in the glass. An oak-driven nose offering aromas of brier, coffee bean and toast. Earthy, savory and rugged, with black plum and darker berry flavors, accented by oak, finishing with admirable persistence of slightly tart black cherries. 14.3% alc.. · Dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Ripe aromas of black cherries and wild berries with hints of leather, clay, seasoned oak and rose petals. Moderately intense and bordering overripeness, with a core of black cherries, black raspberries, poached plums, black currants and raisins, and some oak in the background. Very tasty with mildly firm tannins and a crisp finish. The ripest of the 2004-2009 vintages. Starting to turn the corner and the only wine tasted in this lineup that was showing age. Drink up. Good. 15.1% alc.. · Flamboyant and sexy perfume of crushed black cherries and blackberries with a lovely accent of oak and dried herbs. Alcohol peeks out a skoosh.
