2016 Black Kite Sierra Mar Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., pH 3.55, TA 0.60, 200 cases, $45. Pisoni “clone.” Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The oak dominates the aromatic profile with scents of spice, vanilla and ash, but there is enough blackberry fruit aroma to satisfy. A wine for fruit hedonists with a boisterous core of blackberry and cassis flavors underlain with toasty oak. Suave in texture with very modest tannins, finishing long but with slight astringency. When tasted two days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, there was more integration of oak but the noticeable tannins persisted on the finish. Score: 90. 2016 Black Kite Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

Aromas of roasted coffee beans and toast with no fruit input. Mid weight plus in style, with flavors of toast, char and espresso obscuring the underlying black fruits. A brutish wine that finishes slightly hot and bitter. 2016 Black Kite Kite’s Vineyard Rest Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

14.6% alc., pH 3.50, TA 0.64, 1,625 cases, $50. Dijon 114 and 115, and Pommard clones. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 66% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Reserved, but pleasant scents of dark berries, balsam and vanilla. Blessed with copious and well-ripened purple and black berry fruits. The fine-grain tannins are arrested, and the wine finishes with graciousness and length. There is more oak evident than balance would dictate, but otherwise a very enjoyable wine. Score: 90. 2016 Black Kite Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

14.4% alc., pH 3.44, TA 0.61, 140 cases, $58. Dijon clones 76, 95, and 96. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 66% new. · Moderate golden yellow in the glass. This is an oak-inspired Chardonnay offering aromas of toast and brioche along with pineapple, lemongrass and honey. Richly fruited and intensely flavored, offering tastes of pineapple, yellow apple, tropical fruits and a bit of oak-driven toast and coconut. The fruit assaults the palate with purpose, yet the experience benefits from adequate acidity. The mouthfeel is slight viscous and comforting. $60. Dijon clone 777. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Leading off are aromas of blackberry syrup, black plum and oak barrique. Bold and rich in a mid weight plus style, with expansive boysenberry, blackberry and pomegranate fruit flavors. Nicely balanced, with deft oak and tannin management. Along with the glorious fruit, the wine’s most outstanding feature is the suave mouthfeel. Still shot through with pleasure when tasted two days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2016 Black Kite Redwood’s Edge Block Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., pH 3.50, TA 0.64, 132 cases, $60. Dijon 114 and 115 clones. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 66% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Deep aromas of dark cherry and blueberry-pomegranate. The mid weight plus palate of long and powerful black fruits are framed by integrated bold tannins. There is a nice complement of grilling spice flavor with a deft kiss of oak. The finish is blissful and lengthy and the balance is flat-out impeccable. 2016 Black Kite River Turn Block Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

14.6% alc., pH 3.40, TA 0.67, 131 cases, $60. Pommard clone. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 66% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of ripe black fruits, seared beef, black olive and fertile earth. A mid weight plus styled wine with a deliciously rich core of blackberry, black raspberry and cassis flavors supported by subtle oak flavors. Despite the stunning fruit load, the wine is light on its feet with firm, but needed tannins and complimentary acidity. The finish is noticeably extended. Still fat and lush when tasted the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle. The nose features ripe, black fruits along with noticeable gravelly “minerality.” Prodigious purple and black fruits flood the mouth with goodness, backed by bold tannins in a mid weight plus style. Subdued aromas of lemon zest, wet earth, toast, and coffee. An acid-driven style, with bright flavors of citrus and green apple. Slightly creamy in texture, with a burst of oak in the background. Sleek and quite appealing in texture, with impressive length and finishing power. This wine has the most aggressive tannins at present, arriving with a rush on the somewhat astringent finish. The nose is filled with spices such as clove, cardamom and turmeric in harmony with well-ripened dark cherry fruit. Potent and sappy on the palate, with well-spiced dark fruit flavors flooding the mouth, yet light on its feet, with integrated firm tannins and skillful use of oak. Compared to the Soberanes Chardonnay, this wine is more mineral-driven with scents of salt air, green apple, and lemon meringue pie, reaching more intensity over time in the glass. Refined, crisp and refreshing, with plenty of apple, lemon and tangerine fruit flavors to satisfy. Very polished with admirable oak seasoning showing up as a touch of caramel. The aromas leap from the glass, penetrating the olfactory senses with black cherry, blackberry, peat, citrus, cardamom and redwood timber scents. Luscious, but angelic on the palate, with mid weight plus flavors of black cherry and black raspberry fruits. A very sexy wine with a velvety mouthfeel, silky tannins, complimentary oak, and enough acid to energize the luscious fruit load. After fermentation, the wine first rested for 10 months in a mix of 33% new and 1-year-old French oak barrels. The best barrels were aged for another 12 months for a total of 22 months in barrel. · Moderately light cherry red color in the glass. Flat-out delicious with layers of flavor including black cherry liquor, black raspberry jam, and Hoison sauce. Very attractive scents of fresh cherries and red plums with more subtle accents of Spanish spices, dried rose petals and brewed coffee. A real lip-smacker with juicy spiced plum flavor and notes of tea leaves, clove and oak. The mid-palate is rich, round and mature with plenty of vim on the crisp, long finish. Bigshouldered and richly endowed with spiced dark stone fruits backed by wellproportioned firm tannins and toasty oak, offering a creamy texture, and finishing with impressive length. Enticing aromas of black cherries, plum, exotic spices, oak and rose petals. An attention grabbing core of delicious black cherry fruit with subtle notes of spice and oak. Creamy on the palate with extraordinary length. A hedonist’s Pinot that will attract many fans. My only nit is the high alcohol which peaks out when the wine warms in the glass. Very good.
