This 1-acre parcel is owned by the Emerson family and is surrounded by Burnside Road Vineyard. · Light cherry red color in the glass. The perfume of fresh crushed cherries, cranberries and oak spice set the stage for the light to mid weight, elegantly presented flavors of red and blue berries and cherries with a welcome touch of spice. 2014 Balletto Burnside Road Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 13.7% alc., 630 cases, $44. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Black cherry and raspberry fruits are featured in the middleweight styled wine that adds a touch of nutty oak and earthy flora tone. 2014 Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., 315 cases, $75. Released October 2016. This vineyard was planted by the Martinelli family and Patz & Hall has been making a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Burnside Vineyard since 2002. Clones 115 and 777. Wild and cultured yeast fermentation, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of dark berry mash, spice and toast lead to a mid weight styled wine with flavors of oak-infused blackberry and black grape with a touch of spice. A bit rugged and barrel-laden upon opening with some astringency. Much better six hours later and also the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, showing less tannin and oak overlay and more charm. Score: 91. 2013 Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 269 cases, $75. This vineyard is located just west of Sebastopol and farmed by the Martinelli family. Primarily Dijon clone 115 with a small amount of 777. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole cluster, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 60% new French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, raspberry and good barnyard lead off. Somewhat luscious black cherry and boysenberry fruits are well balanced by polished tannins and energetic acidity. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was more enjoyable in all respects with plenty of spicy sweet fruit emerging. Score: 90. 2012 Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 13.2% alc., 425 cases, $75. This vineyard is farmed by the Martinelli’s and Patz & Hall has produced Pinot Noir from this source since 2001. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with hi-tone scents of crushed dark red berries, black cherry and brioche. The mid weight flavors echo the nose with an added hint of smoke and herbs. The engaging fruit comes to the front over time in the glass. A bit rustic and rugged upon opening, with a rush of tannins, but showing much better harmony and refinement the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2011 Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 13.6% alc., 220 cases, $70. From a vineyard planted to clone 115 in Goldridge soil by the Martinelli family on a site that was a former hillside apple orchard. Burnside was picked at the last minute before the rains, and at 13.6%, is one of the lowest alcohol Pinot Noirs Patz & Hall has ever produced. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole clusters, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration. · Dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is entirely oak-driven initially with no fruit evident. Full-bodied flavors of oak-kissed black cherry and blackberry, with a hint of licorice-laced cola. Somewhat of a brut of a wine that currently lacks personality. The fruit that does peek out seems quite pretty and there is some finishing persistence. Tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the delicate fruit was still overwhelmed by oak. Time will tell. Score: 88. Reviewed February 4, 2014 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2010 Balletto Burnside Road Vineyard Estate Bottled Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., 350 cases, $35 (retail $40). Gold Medal 2011 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Aromas of very ripe dark berries and plums with hints of prune and oak. Middleweight very ripe fruit flavors with notes of Hoison sauce and rhubarb. A bit linear and bogged down with oak. Soft tannins make for easy drinking. 2007 Balletto Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., 300 cases, $22. · Demure aromas of dark red fruits with a faint echo of oak.
