Soliste is a collaboration between long time friends Elisabeth and Claude Koeberle and Beth and Donald Plumley. The name, Soliste, is derived from the special barrel or "soliste" that Burgundian winemakers reserve for their family and friends. The winery began modestly in 2005 with the production of 143 cases of Pinot Noir.
Koeberle is completely and utterly infatuated with Burgundies. The winery's Pinot Noirs are sourced from selected terroirs in the Sonoma Coast and are single clone ("Monoclone®"), single vineyard and single cooperage wines (since 2009). The wines are Old World in style ("Chambolle Musigny in the New World"). Don and Claude have a serious commitment to craft the most expressive and compelling wines possible with insistence on limiting yields. The wines have delivered complexity, elegance and length, and have been embraced by some of the best restaurants and sommeliers around the US.
Beginning in 2016, the owners made another atypical decision that demonstrates their commitment. They began to further reduce production to allow them to more intently focus on wines that showcase their philosophy. Reducing production was inspired by selecting that special barrel of each vintage that stands out. Some wines will only be produced once.
By 2017, Soliste was increasing allocation for customers, a challenge since there has been little availability of these wines with much of production going to restaurants.
Soliste is sold through a mailing list and has distribution in many fine restaurants in California, Texas and New York. Tasting is available by appointment in Santa Rosa at the production facility.
2016 Soliste Renaissance Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.1% alc., 45 cases. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. As oxygen works its magic, the nose explodes with delightful aromas of black cherry, rose petal and barbecue rub. A very sophisticated wine with enviable harmony, offering middleweight flavors of dark stone and berry fruits. There is but a whisper of supportive oak, felty tannins, and an extremely persistent finish that lingers to the next sip. 2016 Soliste Sonatera Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
12.9% alc., 45 cases. · Moderate garnet color in the glass.The nose drove me crazy with soaring aromas of dark cherry, strawberry, cola, and grilled mushroom aromas. The mid-weight fruit really makes an entrance, with bombastic flavors of black cherry, strawberry, spice and savory herbs. Minor tannins and a slight citrus note mark the extended finish. Score: 94. 2016 Soliste Renaissance Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.1% alc., 45 cases, $85 ( available by allocation). The goal at Soliste is to focus on each specific clone of Pinot Noir that is best in harmony with each vineyard site: Single Vineyard, Single Clone, and Single Cooperage wines - Monoclone®. Claude Koeberle and Don Plumley have the dream to be in the conversation with the legendary Burgundies because they are the benchmarks that inspire and drive their madness. They feel that the 2016 vintage Soliste Pinot Noir wines are the most Burgundian of all the vintages produced to date. This wine is from The Sonatera Vineyard, specifically a few rows of vines that allowed to craft a deeper wine, pressing 50% whole cluster to create more layers without losing elegance. Claude remarked, “I have never tasted a Pinot Noir of such pedigree outside of my native Bourgogne.” Claude is prone to hyperbole but I am agreement with him with regards to this wine. I respect his palate, for Claude is a rare breed - a chef for over 50 years who co-owns restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles - and who has a unique, unlimited knowledge of and perhaps more important, a unmatched passion for Pinot Noir and its role at the dinner table.
Note: Because this is a very challenging time for wineries and restaurants, Soliste is currently selling two wines normally sold only to restaurants at restaurant direct-wholesale prices: 2014 Les Cailles Russian River Chardonnay and 2015 Narcisse Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, both $28. Richer than many Soliste Pinot Noir wines, but still nimble and coaxing on the palate, with flavors of black cherry and boysenberry. Substantial weight in the mouth, yet sleek and comforting, finding solace in a welcome contribution of oak and a finish that just won’t quit. Still generous when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle indicating the potential for longevity. 2015 Soliste Renaissance Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The aromas arrive over time in the glass, offering enticing scents of black cherry, raspberry, spice drawer, dried herbs and a whiff of oak. Striking mid-weight flavors of black raspberry and boysenberry that saturate the mid palate and carry through a very long and glorious finish. There is but a whisper of oak and silky tannins. 2015 Soliste Soleil Rouge Sonoma Coast Rosé de Pinot Noir
13.2% alc., 148 cases, $22. A serious offering in the Provence style. Primarily sourced from La Cruz Vineyard. 43% 12 hour skin contact, 85% whole cluster pressed, aged 4.5 months in neutral French oak barrels.
Note: I also tasted the 2014 vintage of this wine demonstrating that serious rosé can improve with some bottle age contrary to what many wine drinkers believe. The 2014 Rosé de Pinot Noir was even better, less fruit driven, but more complexity and tertiary character. Buy a few bottles of the 2015 Rosé and keep some in your cellar for a year or two to see what I mean. Best when chilled. · Moderate salmon color in the glass. 2014 Soliste Grands Charmes Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Very lovable wine with a seductive perfume of cherry, exotic spices and burnt tobacco. Elegant and silky, with a mid weight core of expansive cherry and raspberry fruits picking up depth over time in the glass. A dollop of oak and spice add satisfaction. 13.8% alc. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Genteel aromas of dark cherry, earthy flora, rose petal and truffle. Perfumed on the mid-weight plus palate as well, with discreetly generous flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, purple grape, plum, root beer and spice. A savory nose offers aromas of red cherry and dried herbs. Light to mid weight in concentration, with flavors echoing the aromas. Strong entry and mid-palate vigor in an elegant and refined mid-weight style displaying flavors of strawberry, cherry, raspberry and baking spices. 2014 Soliste Lune et Soleil Lake County Sauvignon Blanc

2014 Soliste Narcisse Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
12.9% alc., pH 3.61, TA 0.56, 819 cases, $45. A cuvée from the other barrels not included in the MonoCloneº bottlings. Barrels were blended together and aged to harmonize. 21% whole cluster fermentation. Brief cold soak, gentle ferment and aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 37% new. This wine is primarily distributed to restaurants. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Seductive perfume of black cherry, raspberry, plum, dried herbs and toasty oak. The mid weight flavors echo the aromas with an added riff of spice. Sleek and forward drinking with plenty of phenolic ripeness to satisfy even at this lower alcohol level. The evocative nose offers aromas of dark red cherry, purple berry, rose petal, tobacco and earthy flora. Soft, smooth and stylish in the mouth with noticeable delicacy and refinement. The most savory and lightest wine in the 2014 lineup, with a bit of mushroom framing the dark red and purple fruits. There is also a carbonic quality to the fruit profile. 2014 Soliste L’Ambroisie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

The aromas of dark cherry, black raspberry sous bois, spice and pipe tobacco soar from the glass over time. Charming on the palate with a mid weight plus core of richly flavored dark cherry and black raspberry fruits framed with a touch of oak spice and tobacco. Enviable vibrancy, with fine tannins, a silken mouthfeel, and a very persistent finish redolent in sweet cherry fruit. This is the most boisterous wine in the 2014 lineup, yet one that dances graciously in the mouth from attack to finish. The acid and tannin are compatible backbone companions predicting age ability. 2014 Soliste L’Ermite Rouge Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.4% alc. 27 cases, $100. Sourced from a monastic vineyard located off a winding road through redwoods. Claude calls it a “Hermitage of Peace.” 23 Monoclone®. 50% whole cluster. Aged 28 months in a used cigar shaped oak barrel from France. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Pleasant but shy aromas of darker stone and berry fruits, along with scents of fertile earth and mulch. A richly fruited wine in a mid weight plus style, with dark black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors framed by modestly firm tannins that carry over on the gloriously long and intensely fruity finish. The gorgeous fruit was more expressive when the wine was re-tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2014 Soliste Solitaire Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 63 cases, $100. A selection of the very best grapes through multiple passes at harvest at Guidici Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast near Occidental. A monoclone wine of Dijon “828.” 50% whole cluster fermentation. Aged in one 600-liter oak barrel for an extended 28 months. · Rather unctuous yet polished in this vintage, with a complex nose of black cherry and blackberry, forest floor and rose petal and a mid weight plus array of fresh dark fruits kissed by earth and savory herb notes with gracious oak support. The mouth feel is particularly dreamy. Juicy, with amorous tannins and a gutsy finish that persists. Still outstanding the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle. This wine is built for the long haul and I almost regret popping the cork so soon. However, the extended elevage has rendered the wine approachable now. Score range 94-95. Exquisitely balanced in a very easy going and ephemeral style, featuring flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and spice. A beautifully crafted, sensual wine that is expansive in the mouth. 2013 Soliste Les Cailles Russian River Valley Chardonnay

Vineyard located just north of Sebastopol, originally planted in 1971 and among the oldest Chardonnay vines in the Russian River Valley. 100% whole cluster pressed, fermented on the lees in concrete eggs. Malolactic fermentation arrested to preserve brightness and focus. Additional barrel aging in 600L Taransaud barrels for 11 months. Claude says, “White Burgundies are our benchmark….extraordinary verve, complexity and elegance.” · Light golden yellow color in the glass. A wine that thoroughly satisfies with flavors of lemon, blonde caramel and vanilla creme. Fresh on the palate, with toothsome softness and a giving cut on the finish. 2013 Soliste St. Andelain Lake County Sauvignon Blanc
12.1% alc. pH 3.35, TA 0.79, 188 cases, $55. 20- year-old vines on a mix of alluvial and volcanic soils rich in minerality and organically farmed. Mystére clone. Aged 16 months in Ermitage 265L cigar-shaped French oak barrels, 25% new. No malolactic fermentation. Claude says, “Aromas of flint minerality, marine oyster shells, sea weed and fleur de sel, reminiscent of the winter cold ocean spray in Brittany over the oyster beds….chiseled taste of tart green apple, quince, waxy star fruit and oyster shell….razor sharp long finish accented with kaffir lime.” · Aromas of salty sea breeze, lemonlime and fresh cut grass. Soft and slightly creamy on the palate, with flavors of lemon, Granny Smith apple, pear and engaging salinity. A long, lemony finish leaves a lasting impression. 2013 Soliste Forêt Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Sourced from a vineyard secluded by redwoods near Occidental, just 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the western coastal range. 50% whole cluster fermentation. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 22% new. · Moderately light ruby red color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, sous-bois, red berries and nutty oak. Hair-raising attack of black cherry fruit causes the drinker to sit up and take notice. Very polished and elegant, with waves of cherry and spice flavor with the slightest burnt tobacco note. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. · The most Chambolle Musigny in style with an ephemeral quality that seduces the drinker. Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. I thought sure this wine had whole cluster inclusion based on its savory components. Rapturous aromas of black cherry, raspberry, spice, rose petal and cigar. Velvety in the mouth, with a well-spiced black cherry core that is highly expressive. Lightest in weight of the three Pinot Noirs tasted today, but not light in flavor. Floral and toasty oak notes add interest. The delicate tannins make for an elegant impression. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was aromatically intoxicating and the spiced fruit core continued its exuberance. Tres Pinot. Score: 94. Claude says, “Aroma worthy of Le Musigny, becoming intoxicating in purity and depth….elegant and ethereal with a precise palate (“Droit” is the term in Bourgogne).” · Light garnet color in the glass. The nose says, “Drink me!” Outrageous aromas of cherry, wine cellar, rose petal and sous-bois hold up beautifully over time in the glass. My notes say, “fantastic,” referring to the delectable flavors of cherry, raspberry and spice with a hint of tobacco. Elegantly composed with benevolent tannins, a silken mouth feel and a lavish cherry-fueled finish, this wine goes down like mother’s milk but tastes even better . Score: 97. Brief cold soak, fermentation in small lots with ritual manual punch downs. Aged 16 months in neutral French oak barrels. Claude says, “Captures the alchemy that becomes great Pinot Noir, including the intoxicating nose, powerful yet refined layers of spice, sous-bois, truffles and wild cherry, amazing length and complex finish.” Essentially the same wine as Le Ambroisie but intended primarily for restaurants. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Engaging aromas of ripe plum, darker cherry, peppery spices and redwood forest. Intriguing in the mouth, with mid weight flavors of Middle Eastern spices, black cherry, purple berry and a touch of nuttiness. The wine has admirable elegance, honorable balance and a driven finish. The mid weight flavors of cherry and raspberry combined with more subtle floral and spice notes tug at your taste buds. Silky in the mouth, with soft, fine-grain tannins and a bombastic cherry-fueled finish. 2013 Soliste Sonatera Vineyard T Block Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.7% alc., 123 cases, $85. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose is focused on aromas of spiced black cherries, plum, vanilla and sous-bois. Very elegantly composed, with dark cherry and plum fruits engaging from entry to exit. Glorious flavors with whole cluster nuances, impeccable balance, and a cherry-fueled finish that never gives up. This wine has a spring in its step and is even more enticing when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. This wine will slay any appetite for Burgundian Pinot Noir. 2013 Soliste Extravagant Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

MonoClone®: single vineyard, single clone, single barrel source. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Intoxicating aromas of cherry, wild strawberry and exotic spices. Suave and sexy, with mid weighted flavors of black cherry and whole cluster driven hints of pine sap, root beer, spice and edible rose. Eloquent in style with impeccable balance, the wine offered gossamer tannins, and a spice-fueled finish that was revelatory. I relished the whole cluster integration in this wine as well as its acidity that can enable many food matches. When tasted the following day, I was still “ga-ga” over this wine. This wine shows what Pinot Noir can offer when a dedicated vintner commits to meticulous viticulture and vinification techniques based on a fanatical devotion to Pinot Noir. Score: 97. Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. · The most intensely fruity and darkest fruited nose of the three Pinot Noirs tasted here. Black raspberry, blackberry fruits are complimented by an assortment of spices including nutmeg. Impressive attack of bold black raspberry, black cherry and spice flavors that find every crevice in the mouth, but an even more impressive finish that dances on for minutes. Impeccable balance, with a silk and satin texture, and inviting acid backbone. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, this wine was charming, sexy and loquacious with considerable nuance and a harmonious personality. 2013 Soliste Solitaire Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
13.3% alc., 52 cases and 78 magnums, $100. From a vineyard nestled in a redwood forest. Multiple passes through the vineyard selecting only the very best grapes. 50% whole cluster fermentation. Aged in one 600-liter barrel for 28 months. The model for this wine is the Bertheau Bonnes Mares. · Light cherry red color in the glass. A very young wine that needs decanting or more time in the cellar to evolve. Over time in the glass, lovely aromas of darker cherry and berry, rose petal, sous-bois and spice arrive with a gentle blanket of oak. More expression, yet reticent, on the palate, with a mid weight core of juicy black cherry fruit, spice and savory herbs that commands attention on the mid palate and persists through a pleasingly satin finish. Much better the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. No hurry to pop the cork on this one, much like a Bonnes Mares. 12.9% alc., 212 cases, $55. Whole cluster pressed, aged in a cigar-shaped barrique, in homage to the late Didier Dagueneau. The wine comes from a single organically farmed vineyard. The grapes are de-stemmed, allowed 36 hours of skin contact and pressed to barrel where it is fermented and aged for 16 months. There is no malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity, vibrancy and length. · Pale golden yellow color in the glass. Clearly a special wine from the get-go. Aromas of salty sea breeze, lime and tropical fruits give it a fascinating start. Bright on the palate, with flavors of lime peel, gooseberry, apple and saline-infusion. Well-spiced black cherry, blackberry and black plum fruits flood the palate with goodness and hold on through a velvety, vibrant finish. Plenty to like about this wine with hi-tone aromas of cherry, spice box, sous-bois and buttery oak. Light to mid weight flavors of cherry and strawberry with elegance to spare. Very silky in the mouth with comforting elegance, a soft tannic backbone, and some finishing persistence. Surprisingly concentrated and robust at such a low alcohol percentage. Supple tannins make for a seductively silky mouth feel and bright acidity leaves the finish clean and vivid. 13.6% alc., 323 cases, $68. A collaboration between long time friends Elisabeth and Claude Koeberle and Beth and Donald Plumley. The name, Soliste, is derived from the special barrel or soliste that Burgundian winemakers reserve for their family and friends. Sonatera Vineyard is located on a ridge near the cooler part of Sebastopol. Clones 115 and 777 planted in Goldridge sandy loam. · Darkly colored. The nose is dominated by savory spices including cardamon. The thick plum and blackberry fruit is set off by notes of anise, vanillin and cream. Very silky in the mouth with subtle fine tannins.
