The idea for Benovia Winery was first launched in 2003 when Joe Anderson and his wife Mary Dewane bought a 55-acre ranch that was for sale west of Healdsburg, California. The property included old vine Pinot Noir and Zinfandel on the Cohn Vineyard. In 2005, they purchased the Hartman Road Vineyards and Winery in the Russian River Valley from Cecil DeLoach.
Winemaker Michael Sullivan, who had made many brilliant Pinot Noirs at Hartford Family Winery, joined as a partner to lead the winemaking, vineyard development and management of the winery. Chris Kanga, who had worked at DeLoach Vineyards for 25 years, is the vineyard manager. Bob Mosby was the initial face of Benovia initially, overseeing sales and customer relations (replaced in 2012 by Sara Ysunza). Jen Walsh joined Benovia as assistant winemaker in 2013.
The winery and vineyards were quickly upgraded and acres of new vines were planted. The first commercial release was of the 2006 vintage which won the praise of wine critics and customers alike. New vineyards have been planted on a 42-acre parcel the winery acquired adjacent to the winery, as well as another 16-acre site near Freestone (Tilton Hill Vineyard). Benovia now has 71 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel vines. The winery's ultimate goal is to produce almost all their wines from vineyards they own and farm. An old house on the property has been converted to a visitors center for tastings and dinners.
The name, Benovia, is named after the owner's (Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane) fathers. They merged Mary's father's name, Ben, with Joe's father's name Novian, to create Benovia. The name Benovia is a testament to what their fathers taught them about hard work, striving for perfection, and taking pride in what they do. The name of the estate vineyard at the winery is Martaella, a combination of Joe's mother's name, Martha, and Mary's mother name, Eleanor.
The 2012 vintage Pinot Noirs represent a landmark for Benovia Winery. The first Martaella Vineyard and Tilton Hill Pinot Noirs were released, and along with the estate Cohn Vineyard represent a move toward 100% estate grown Pinot Noir production. The La Pommeraie Pinot Noir is sourced from Zio Tony Vineyard farmed by the Martinelli family.
Tilton Hill Vineyard is on a ridge top near the town of Freestone and is the winery's coldest vineyard site, lying just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. The soils are well-drained Goldridge type. The 11.7-acre vineyard ws planted high density in 2009 with a combination of heirloom selections and Dijon clones on a very low vigor rootstock (420A), Cohn Vineyard is the oldest estate vineyard, first planted in 1970 to a massale selection of Pinot Noir (likely Martini and Pommard). The vines are dry-farmed. Martaella Vineyard is planted to nine clones of Pinot Noir and four clones of Chardonnay. Originally 13.5 acres of Pinot Noir when the existing winery was purchased in 2005, it has expanded with the acquisition of a neighboring 40-acre horse ranch and now consists of 42 planted acres. The vines are planted to very high density (2200-2722 vines per acre)
Tasting in a nicely appointed hospitality center is available by appointment (707-526-4441). A comfortable three bedroom house (Vineyard Hideaway Cottage) in the middle of property's vines is available for rent.
2018 Benovia Tilton Hill Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Very inviting aromas of boysenberry pie, forest floor and tobacco. Mid-weight plus in richness and creamy in texture, with an arrow of blue and purple berry and pomegranate flavors. This is a wine of gentle richness with enough acidity to lift and freshen the fruit load. Very gentle tannins and excellent balance make for easy drinking now. The finish is ridiculously long. 2018 Benvoia Courageous Care Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., pH 3.65, TA 0.60, 94 cases, $40. A blend crafted to memorialize Margaret Foley and all first responders. Sourced from two of Benovia’s estate vineyards. Heirloom Pinot Noir clones, several of which were fermented 25% whole cluster. Released July 2020. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 45% new. A percentage of sales will be donated to Feeding American and Direct Relief. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose offers a blend of black cherry, cardamom spice and toasty oak aromas. Mid-weigh plus in concentration featuring a core of blackberrypomegranate fruit accented with oak-driven dark caramel flavor. Modest tannins make for easy early drinking. 2018 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., pH 3.61, TA 0.56, 490 cases, $65. Released fall 2020. Sourced from George Martinelli Zio Tony Vineyard. Dijon clones 777 and “828.” Once an apple orchard, the name ‘La Pommeraie’ (French for apple orchard) pays homage to the Martinelli family and the history of the site. · Dark garnet color in the glass. A little rustic and tightly wound at this stage. The primary aroma is earthy flora with only a touch of black raspberry. Mid-weight plus in concentration, with earthtoned flavors of boysenberry, blueberry and pomegranate. Satiny in texture, with notable but not intrusive tannins and a crazy long finish. Slightly more giving when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle. Did I mention that the finish is outrageously long? Cellar this beauty for the future. For now Score: 92. 2018 Benovia Martaella Estate Russian River Valley Pinot
14.3% alc., pH 3.62, TA 0.58, 289 cases, $65. Released fall 2020. 8-day cold soak, indigenous yeast primary fermentation, aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 38% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Deep, seductive aromas of black cherry, cassis and spice. A terrific burst of purple and black fruits greet the palate and persist through a hearty mid-palate and lengthy finish. Perfectly balanced, slightly creamy in the mouth with the best of both worlds - power and elegance. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was still mesmerizing. The best Pinot Noir I have ever tasted from this vineyard. Score: 96. 2018 Benovia Tilton Hill Estate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Released fall 2020.6-day cold soak, indigenous yeast primary fermentation, aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. The nose brought me close to ecstasy with aromas of boysenberry pie, forest floor and tobacco. Mid-weight plus in style, with a compelling core of zestful blue and purple berry fruits framed by gentle tannins and redeeming acidity. Velvety in texture, with a lifted finish that fails to yield for quite some time. The winemaker only selects barrels that reflect what he feels are the best expression of the vintage. 8-day cold soak, indigenous yeast primary fermentation, aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. The nose opens slowly to reveal alluring aromas of blackberry, black cherry and cardamom spice. Very polished in the mouth, with black cherry and blackberry fruit galore. The wine finds good balance among the unctuous fruit, tannins and acidity. Even more fruit expression and charm when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2018 Benovia Three Sisters Fort Ross-Seaview Pinot Noir

Sourced from Lee Martinelli Jr. Three Sisters Vineyard. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Quite fragrant in the glass with the scent of cherry, strawberry, rose petal and forest floor. Soft and sleek in character in a mid weight style featuring flavors of red cherry, strawberry and spice. Very gentle, sliding off the palate like a silk sheet. Timid tannins but enough to provide balance. Quite a change-up from the other more powerful 2018 Benovia vineyard-designated wines yet satisfies in its own way and is very giving now. Score: 93. 2017 Benovia Bella Una Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.2 % alc.. · Dark garnet color in the glass. This winemaker’s selection brings together all the best features of the vineyard designates. The concentration is more tempered and the wine is more sophisticated. Aromas of purple berry, warm baking spice and biscuit lead to a mid weight plus style wine offering a discreet arsenal of purple and black fruit flavors. 2017 Benovia Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County Pinot Noir
14.1% alc.. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The wine opens slowly to reveal aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, vanillin and herbal underbrush. Middleweight in style, with flavors of boysenberry and black cherry with a savory herbaceous thread. Modest tannins and finish. Fine, but doesn’t excite. 2017 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Chardonnay
14.5% alc.. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. A hint of reduction, lemon oil and buttery brioche on the nose. Refined and more steely and acid-driven with bright lemon notes that last through the lengthy finish. Subtle flavors of vanilla, green apple and butterscotch add interest. 2017 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc.. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Shy aromas of black fruits, fruitcake, wine cave and vanillin. Full-bodied, well-ripened and fruit-driven, very similar to the Martaella Vineyard bottling. A hunky Pinot Noir with reigned-in tannins, welcome acidity, a suave texture and a lip-smacking finish. Hitone aromas of yellow apple, white flower blossom, buttered popcorn, honey and butterscotch. Richly flavored in a lower-acid style, with flavors of lemon, pineapple and yellow peach. 14.2% alc.. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose is both fruity and savory, offering aromas of dark red cherry and dried herbs. Lighter in style, featuring flavors of cherry, raspberry and baking spice. The outlier in the 2017 lineup with the least extract and most elegance. Soft, fine-grain tannins and a modest finish. 2017 Benovia Tilton Hill Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc.. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Terrific nose with soaring aromas of spice, dark raspberry, fertile earth, burnt tobacco and vanillin. A mid weight load of sweet boysenberry and black raspberry fruits is buffered by gracious oak. I suspect more whole cluster in this wine because of more tannin that donates some astringency on the length finish. 2017 Benovia Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $70. First planted in 1970 most likely to Martini 13 and Pommard clones. This vineyard outdates most other plantings in the Russian River Valley by 20+ years. Farmed organically with minimal irrigation, these gnarled vines produce small and compact clusters with yields of just over 1 ton per acre. 100% de-stemmed, 8- day cold soak, indigenous yeast fermentation, and aged in French oak barrels, 46% new. · The fruit aromas have not arrived even when tasted the following day after opening when underbrush, earthy flora and dark chocolate dominate the aroma profile. Much better on the palate that offers a luscious mid-weight core of deep, dark cherry flavor with sides of cola and vanilla. The tannins are minimal and the texture is creamy. A blend of Calera, Swan, Pommard, Mt. Eden, Chalone, and Dijon 777 and 943 clones. 8-day cold soak, 100% de-stemmed into open-top fermenters for native yeast fermentation over 2 weeks. . Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 37% new. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Engaging aromas of fresh blueberry, pomegranate and blackberry with a hint of toasty oak. Plush on the palate in a well-endowed style featuring blue and black berry fruits. Remarkable intensity in the mouth and on the finish. Sumptuous oak acts in harmony. Very welcoming now. An exceptionally good AVA wine following in the footsteps of the equally fine 2015 version. The wine does not have the concentration, intensity and finish of the other 2016 Benovia Pinot Noirs, but it can stand on its own as a special wine that will find widespread appeal. Score: 91. 2016 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Chardonnay
14.5% alc., $48. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. This wine offers all the good features of Chardonnay. Aromas of lemon pie honey, yellow apple, and subtle spice, toast and butter. Bright on the palate with welcoming flavors of lemon, yellow grapefruit, Honecrisp apple and hints of baking spices and caramel. 2016 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., $60. Sourced from the Zio Tony Ranch Vineyard that is located along the Laguna Ridge at the edge of the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. The vineyard is farmed in conjunction with the Martinelli family. High density planting of 2,420 vines per acre, including clones 777 and “828.” The site was once an apple orchard so to pay homage to the history of the site the wine is named “La Pommeraie,” French for apple orchard. · Dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is flat-out terrific when allowed time and sampled a day ofter bottle opening. The perfume of blackberry, cassis and spice will bring you to your knees. A very polished wine in a mid weight plus style featuring waves of purple berry, blackberry, and plum fruits, accompanied by the right touch of spice and vanilla. 2016 Benovia Martaella Estate Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., $60. 42 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay located in the Laguna de Santa Rosa. Combined volcanic and sedimentary soils (Huichica loam). 14 different clones planted. · Dark garnet color in the glass. The nose opens beautifully over time in the glass, revealing a perfume of black raspberry, blackberry, spice and wine cave. Attacking black cherry and black raspberry fruits with a spice accent in a mid weight style framed by a whisper of oak. A gentle, comforting wine that is creamy on the palate, with enjoyable length in the mouth and on the finish. 2016 Benovia Tilton Hill Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $60. A 12-acre vineyard three ridges inland from the Pacific Ocean. This cool site pushes the boundaries of cool-climate viticulture, with temperatures rarely reach 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Goldridge sandy loam soil. Dijon and heirloom clones. · Very dark garnet color in the glass. Searching for adequate descriptives, I think of this wine as freakish, profound and flat out ridiculous. I have rarely tasted such concentrated fruit in a Pinot Noir. The gorgeous nose sets the stage with seductive aromas of blackberry juice, blackest cherry and spice. On entry, there is a full charge of boysenberry and blackberry hedonistic fruit that is expansive in the mouth and seems to last an eternity on the finish. The wine is about as big fruited as Pinot gets, yet it retains all of Pinot’s charms. There is amazing phenolic ripeness here at a relatively low alcohol level. The mouthfeel is very soothing, oak is deftly managed, and there is gratuitous balance to boot. I consider this a glorious wine, not because of its prodigious fruit, but because it delivers the fruit in a very harmonious package. I rarely have tasted anything quite like it. 2016 Benovia Tilton Hill Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $60. · Very dark garnet color in the glass. 14.2% alc., Magnum. Dark garnet color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with scents of blackberry, cassis, spice and a touch of toasty oak. A flood of purple and black berry fruits meet the palate with a generous attack and expansive length, ending with a remarkably long finish. A touch of spice and anise flavor add interest. Very sleek and comforting in texture with a compliment of oak in the background. A Darth Vader wine exhibiting the dark side of Pinot Noir. 2016 Benovia Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $75. Vineyard originally planted in 1970 to a massale selection, likely Martini 13 and Pommard. This vineyard outdates most other plantings in the Russian River Valley by 20+ years. Farmed organically, yields are typically just over 1 ton-per-acre. This bottling is the outlier in the lineup for it offers much less fruit sap, but still is captivating in its own way. Aromas of cherry and sandalwood lead to a mid weight core of black raspberry and black cherry fruits dusted with oak. Even a hint of root beer shows up. 2016 Benovia Bella Una Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., $80. A winemaker selection of barrels that are the best expression of the vintage. · Aromas of interest evolve over time including boysenberry, blackberry and sweet oak. Mid weight plus in style with a core of well-ripened purple and black berry fruits. Well-structured for aging with a remarkably long finish filled with boysenberry fruit. The wine is reclusive upon opening but surfaces over time in the glass and is much more expressive when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. The potential is obvious, but this special wine needs coaxing through decanting, or preferably, a few years in the cellar. The most backward wine in the lineup. Score: 93-94. 2015 Benovia Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., unreleased. An historic 18-acre vineyard first planted in 1970, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Russian River area. The vineyard is part of a 55-acre ranch purchased in 2003 by Benovia owners Joe Anderson and his spouse, Mary Dewane. This site has also produced celebrated single vineyard wines for Williams Selyem and Kosta Browne. This bottling comes from 9 acres of a massale selection (likely Martini and Pommard clones) of Pinot Noir. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Shy aromas of grape must and crushed berries. Mid weight flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, earth and smoke framed by silky tannins. Well-structured but not imposing. This is often my favorite wine in the Benovia lineup but this wine is not particularly expressive at this stage, even when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 14.1% alc., pH 3.62, TA 0.62, 2,600 cases, $38. Released April 2016. Sourced from Martaella, Cohn, Tilton Hill and Zio Tony Vineyards. A blend of many clones including Calera, Swan, Mt. Eden, Pommard, Chalone and Cijon 777 and 943. Rigorously hand sorted, 100% destemmed, 8-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeast in open-top containers for more than two weeks. Aged in French oak barrels, 37% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Those nose opens in stages over time in the glass to a wondrous perfume of dark cherry and berry and spice. Quite dark fruited on the palate in a mid weight plus style of great concentration accented with a note of Asian 5-spice. Impressive fruit staying power through the mid palate and finish. 2015 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Chardonnay
14.5% alc., pH 3.51, TA 0.66, 305 cases, $48. Vineyard is located at edge of the Green Valley AVA and planted at a very high density of 2420 vines per acre. Dijon clone 548 and 95. A former apple orchard that struggles in deep sandy soils in one of the cooler sites in the Russian River Valley. Indigenous yeast fermentation in French oak barrels and aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Aromas arrive nicely over time in the glass including crusty lemon pie, grilled pear and toasted brioche. Delish flavors of lemon, green apple, grilled pineapple and honey. 2015 Benovia La Pommeraie Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
300 cases, $60. Sourced from a vineyard farmed byGeorge Martinelli located on Frei Road. The vineyard was once an apple orchard, leading to the name “La Pommeraie,” French for “apple orchard.” The vineyard is planted to a very high density of 1 meter x 2 meters or 2420 vines per acre. Dijon 777 and “828.” · Deep, dark garnet color in the glass. Deep, dark garnet color in the glass. A highly nuanced perfume offers aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, dark rose petal, cardamom spice and underbrush. The gorgeous and core of sappy purple and black fruits is backed by toned and firm fruit tannins. Big as is typical for this vineyard, but focused and adroit, with a dreamy velvety texture and a very long and silky finish offering an added pleasing floral note. A perfect example of the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. An extraordinary wine that I had to re-taste from a second bottle to be sure. Score: 98. Reviewed June 4, 2017
2015 Benovia Martaella Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., 300 cases, $60. This vineyard surrounds the winery in Santa Rosa in an area known as the Laguna de Santa Rosa. The 58- acre property has 42 acres of Pinot Noir (nine clones) and Chardonnay (four clones) planted in Goldridge soils. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. More forward drinking, with lifted aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, cola, spice and wilted rose. Delicious core of black fruits framed by discreet tannins. 14.2% alc., 300 cases, $60. The coldest Benovia estate vineyard, located a few miles from the Pacific Ocean near the town of Freestone. 11.7 acres were planted to Pinot Noir in 2009. Low vigor rootstock 420A and heirloom and Dijon selections of Pinot Noir. First vintage was 2012. · Deep, dark garnet color in the glass. The nose opens beautifully over time in the glass, revealing hi-tone aromas of black raspberry, spice box, underbrush and warm brioche. Lush and concentrated, with vigorous fruit flavors of blackberry, black raspberry and ollaliberry. Impeccably balanced with supportive tannins and acidity, and a deft touch oak. 14.5% alc.. Vineyard is located along the Laguna Ridge at the edge of the Green Valley AVA and is planted to Dijon clones 777 and “828.” · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is entirely seductive even at this young age with aromas of dark red cherries a a field of Pinot Noir at bloom. The nose is rather primary, grudgingly offering scents of dark fruits, vanillin and toast. More appealing on the palate, with a mid weight plus core of luscious black fruits. Still a bit unyielding, but with a lush mouthfeel, and a persistent finish. Initially, the aromas of black fruits and toasty oak are subdued, arriving with more purpose over time in the glass. Somewhat unevolved, but enticing, with a compelling core of oak-kissed blueberry-pomegranate and blackberry fruits backed by firm tannins. 14.2% alc., $56. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Shy but pleasing aromas of blackberries, char and wet earth. Strikingly flavorful with oodles of dark berry and plum fruits dressed with exotic spices and smoky oak. The flavors hit the mid palate with a vengeance and march through to the finish with intensity and persistence. Soft tannins make for easy drinking now, but this wine is the most backward in the 2010 lineup and needs cellaring. At this stage, the flavors are ahead of the aromas. $56. Sourced from a Martinelli Family vineyard in the Russian River Valley which at one time was an apple orchard (thus the name, “La Pommeraie,” French for apple orchard). Clones 777 and 828. · This is the one wine in the 2009 lineup that is relatively closed. We initially pulled the cork and found the wine reluctant, and an hour and a half later, it had just begun to open. Fruity aromas augmented by scents of spice and graham. $62. A historic vineyard first planted to Pinot Noir and Zinfandel in 1970. An unlikely pairing in the same vineyard, but the owners planted what they wanted to drink. Over the years, grapes went to Williams Selyem and Kosta Browne. Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane purchased the 55-acre ranch in 2002. Today, the vineyard is 6.5 acres planted with clones of unknown origin, possibly Pommard and Martini. In 2006, Benovia undertook an extensive pruning of the vineyard to reduce clusters and intensify flavors. · A remarkable wine offering alluring aromas of spicy, earthkissed red and black berries that intensify over time in the glass. 2006 Benovia Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., $45. It has been a couple of years of anticipation and Benovia has finally released this wine, its first Pinot Noir. Benovia has recently purchased two properties which will eventually increase the estate vineyards to 75 acres. The first is a 40-acre parcel adjacent to the winery property on the north side. New plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir here will come into production in 2013. An old house on the property will be renovated to offer a reception center for wine tastings and dinners. The second property is a cool site for Pinot Noir located on Falstaff Road near Freestone, 3.5 miles north of the Petaluma wind gap. 12 acres of Pinot Noir will be planted and will come into production in 2013 as well. These new properties will allow Benovia to eventually reach 5.000 case production. In the Fall, a Cohn Vineyard Pinot Noir and Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir will be released. I have tasted both of these a couple times out of barrel and the Savoy recently after bottling and can tell you these wines are gorgeous, sexy Pinot Noirs. The Benovia Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Rosé are outstanding wines in their own right. This is a cult producer in the making and I would advise you join the mailing list asap. · Plenty of berry, earth, game and shroom on the nose. This wine is composed of multiple clones including Pommard, Calera, Martini 13 and Dijon 114 and 115, and is typically slow to come around. Each of the clones were vinified separately with only select barrels included in this bottling. · The nose is primal with oak char, dark berries, crusty toast and smoke surfacing. The wine possesses a solid dark berry core of fruit with plenty of oak char dominating the fruit at this stage. Silky in texture and nicely composed. Patience will be needed to fully appreciate this young wine which flashed a lot more fruit when newly crafted. Still fresh the next day from a previously opened re-corked bottle. 14.5% alc., 168 cases, $58. This was known in the barrel as the “proprietary blend” which doesn’t sound too appealing. Benovia turned to their customers who came up with the name which means “beautiful together” in Latin. · Deep and darkly colored. Intoxicating and gorgeous aromas of rich black cherry jam and ripe plums. Would love to bottle this nose. Luscious dark-fruited core that is rich and plush and nicely spiced with soft tannins and a finish that gradually fades away with a smooth follow through like a Kobe Bryant jump shot. I have tasted this wine several times both in barrel and in bottle and I can’t wait until August 19 when this and two other equally superb 2006 Pinot Noirs (Cohn Vineyard and a Proprietary Blend from purchased fruit) are released to the mailing list. · This wine is the whole package. Charmingly dark red fruited with nicely spiced aromatics, a full onslaught of fresh fruit, an appealing elegance, and an ending so refreshing that it makes you reach for more. 2006 Benovia Cohn Vineyard Sonoma County Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., 220 cases, $62. At 34 years-old, 9-acre vineyard is one of the oldest in California. Previously, the vineyard supplied notable producers like Williams Selyem and Kosta Browne, but it now an estate property of Benovia. Yields in 2006 were 1.1 tons per acre. The clones are unknown and are planted on St. George rootstock. This wine is darkly colored. · Needs time to open up. Long and persistent scents of red and black cherries nicely spiced and accented by hints of smoke and white pepper. Juicy cherry and raspberry fruits fan out nicely on the palate with some minerality and tartness in the background, leaving a tangerine peel vibe on the lively finish. 14.4% alc., 220 cases, $62. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Inviting aromas of black cherry, cassis, spice and rose petal upon opening. A flood of rich, dark fruits saturate the palate along with hints of toast and licorice in the background. The flavors tiptoe to the edge of over ripeness.
