14.5% alc., $90. A marked contrast to the Cattleya bottling displaying more stone fruit richness and ripeness, yet still very polished and refined, offering. This is not a buttery, oak-driven voluptuous wine but rather one with elegant power and harmonious oak. Always my favorite among the excellent Chardonnays Paul crafts each year. 2019 Paul Lato “Lancelot” Pisoni Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

14.8% alc., $95. Unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of ripe strawberry, black cherry and earthy flora. The flavors echo the aromas with a bit of spice. A bit lighter in this vintage, with a juicy underbelly and reserved tannins. Easily enjoyed now, with excellent balance (no alcohol rears its head at this high ABV). 2017 Paul Lato “Duende” Gold Coast Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir

13.9% alc., $70. · Moderately light garnet color in the mouth. Nicely perfumed with aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, earth and a hint of burnt tobacco. A red-fruited wine with excellent acid vibe, silky tannins and a deft touch of toasty oak. The most elegant of the 2017 vintage wines tasted, offering a lip-smacking finish with some length. 2017 Paul Lato “C’est la Vie” Drum Canyon Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.6% alc., $75. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Shy aromas initially of purple and black fruits. A real mouthful of black raspberry and blackberry fruits in a mid weight plus style. Very polished, with silken tannins, a suave mouthfeel and long, sappy finish. 14.3% alc., $80. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. A complex nose of boysenberry, black raspberry, spice and clay loam is inviting. Discreetly concentrated flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and cassis in a well-ripened, mid weight style. 2017 Paul Lato “Suerte” Solomon Hills Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $80. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Brooding aromas of black fruits and sous-bois. Mid weight plus flavors of plum, black raspberry, blackberry and a hint of tobacco oak are framed with gracious tannins. 14.8% alc., $90. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of blackberry jam, mushroom and comfy oak. Very charming in a mid weight plus style, with waves of black cherry, pomegranate, botanical and spice flavors that trigger all the pleasure centers in the mind. Sleek, with integrated alcohol, adroit oak impression, and a long, purple berry-infused finish. 2016 Paul Lato “Belle dé jour” Duvarita Vineyard Santa Barbara County Chardonnay

14.5% alc., $70. · Light golden pear color in the glass. Enticing aromas of pear, lemon zest, pineapple and wet cement really gain expression over time in the glass. Very friendly on the palate, with great energy and balance, featuring flavors of green apple and lemon-lime backed by spritely acidity. 2016 Paul Lato “Atticus” John Sebastiano Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., $75. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is mainly red fruited with added aromas of rose petal, spice and forest. Beautifully ripened strawberry, black raspberry and black cherry fruits are long in the mouth and unusually juicy. 2016 Paul Lato “Le Souvenir” Sierra Madre Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay

14.3% alc., $75. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. The nose reveals more charming aromas over time in the glass, offering notes of lemon curd, wet soil, pear, honey, 7-Up, toasty brioche and vanillin. Richly composed and textured, yet sleek, with mid weight plus ripe flavors of pineapple, yellow apple and grapefruit. The fruit really clings to the long finish and the oak skips along in the background. 2016 Paul Lato “Seabiscuit” Zotovich Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $75. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Initial aromas of damp earth, flora, and sawdust give way to fruit aromas of cherry and boysenberry over time in the glass. Seemingly disjointed and uninteresting upon opening, exhibiting reserved mid weight flavors of strawberry and cherry. Considerably better on the palate the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, with more juicy fruit expression. 14.3% alc., $75. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with scents of plum, blackberry jam, mushroom, floral bouquet and a hint of oak. A stunning wine from the get-go with mid weight plus flavors of black fruits with accents of spice, licorice and a subtle oak shadow. Remarkable explosiveness on the mid palate. 14.5% alc., $80. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Exuberant aromas of black cherry, rose and exotic spices holds up over some time in the glass. The most tannic wine in the 2016 lineup and what you would expect from this vineyard, but the tannins are supportive without being intrusive. Amazing attack of sweet blackberry, black raspberry and pomegranate fruit flavors that are expansive in the mouth and boldly expressive on the finish. The alcohol is tucked in nicely. Even more seamless and glorious when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. The pedigree of this vineyard as well as its terroir shines in this wine. Score: 95. 13.5% alc., $70. This vineyard is owned and managed by the Burk and Espinosa families. Low yielding vines grown on a sandy plateau with excellent drainage. The own-rooted vines are over 22 years old and are a Martini selection. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose offers an olfactory onslaught of cherry, exotic spice, and burnt tobacco aromas. Light to mid weight in style, with fruit flavors of cherry and cranberry. Elegantly composed, with tight acidity and modest tannins, offering a slightly tart finish. A riff of baking spice and tobacco notes add interest. 14.2% alc., $75. A newer vineyard on the eastern side of the Sta. Rita Hills. Clone 115 and Swan selection. Ownership partners are Sebastiano Sterpa and John Wagner, and vineyard manager is Ruben Solzono. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The aromas of exotic spices, beautifully ripened dark red and purple fruits and a pine sap note are knee-weakening seductive. An ephemeral wine with impressive vibrancy, amazing harmony and silkiness. The boysenberry fruit core is enlivened by bright acidity that also energizes the finish that lasts and lasts and lasts. I found it really hard to avoid swallowing this one. The wine was still almost indescribable when tasted the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle. Score: 98. Dijon clones 113 and 115. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Inviting aromas of black cherry, sous-bois, mushroom and spice. Vivid and vibrant in the mouth with a mid weight core of wellspiced blackberry goodness. Silky, fine-grain tannins satisfy, as does the elegant demeanor, lasting finish, and overall harmony. 14.3% alc., $75. This vineyard is an estate property of Dierberg Winery. Sourced from a parcel located in the western section on the steepest slope, graced by southern exposure. Planted to Swan and Calera selections. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is rather shy upon opening, delivering more sustained black fruit and spice aromas over time in the glass. Mid weight plus in style with an energetic core of gorgeous boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors accented with spice and earth. 14.1% alc., $80. The most westerly vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley appellation making it the coolest due to its proximity to the ocean. Low yielding vines of clones 115, 667 and 777. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Cozy fruit aromas of black cherry and raspberry are paired with aromas of fertile earth, spice, burnt tobacco and bark. A flood of black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry goodness greats the mid palate. Velveteen in texture with deft oak appointments. A juicy cut of acidity energizes the lengthy finish. 14.5% alc., $90. · Dark garnet color in the glass. The nose soars over time with enticing aromas of raspberry compote, rose petal, fertile earth and vanilla biscuit. Silky in the mouth, with plenty of sap yet lacking a husky character, offering flavors of earth-toned, mineral driven, blackberry, black raspberry fruit flavors along with a riff of spice. This wine kept grabbing appeal over time in the glass and was considerably more generous when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. The tannins had been tamed, and the finish was of uncommon length. Decanting of this wine would be advisable if drunk now. A superb rendition of this vineyard’s terroir. Score: 97. Lighter in weight, but highly flavorful, offering a jubilee of cherry goodness. Elegant and silky in the mouth, with very favorable attack and finish. 14.3% alc., $85. Unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Deeply scented nose of cherry, herbs and steak sauce. Rather tame for a Pisoni wine, even an anathema, but reflects the Paul Lato style. A mid weight earthbound cherry core shows off the ripest of the fruit tasted in the three wines reviewed here. As typical for Pisoni Vineyard, the wine has a strong physique, but yet is highly approachable in this case. Pisoni Vineyard is truly one of a handful of Grand Cru California vineyards and representative wines always reflect its excellence and terroir in one way or another. Score: 94. Effortless and harmonious, with racy flavors of black raspberry, boysenberry and plum attacking with intent and persisting through a finish that won’t quit. Noticeably intense on the attack but polished on the palate offering mid weight flavors of cherry and raspberry with a hint of oak vanillin in the background. 14.3% alc., $90. This wine was originally produced solely for the high-end Japanese market, but is now being offered to the mailing list as a sign of appreciation. The wine is sourced from a number of vineyards in the Paul Lato portfolio. “Kokoro” is a Japanese word that means “from the heart.” 70% new French oak. Unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose leads with aromas of black cherry, ash, tobacco and vanilla. Modest in weight, but very flavorful, with tastes of black raspberry, black cherry and boysenberry accented with oak-driven spice and toast. 14.3% alc., $65. Unfiltered. · Moderate deep red color in the glass. Initially very smoky on the nose and palate, fading over time in the glass. The aromas of black raspberry, cherry and strawberry are accented with a hint of Moroccan spice and smoke. Light to mid weight flavors of dark cherries and raspberries with a slight smoky undertone. The tannins are very suave, the wine is easy to drink, and there is an appealing cherry note on the moderately long finish. The following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was somewhat stemmy and herbal. Soft as an angel’s hair and very plush on the palate with mid weight plus flavors of spiced dark raspberry and blueberry. Wines from this vineyard are usually broad shouldered but this offering is suave and modest in weight with aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. The wine is well-crafted with balanced tannins, a dreamy texture and some finishing burst of cherry fruit. My only nit is that the finish is slightly hot. The nose is brooding initially, opening over time to reveal very appealing aromas of spiced berry cake, forest floor and cedary oak. Gathers intensity and interest over time in the glass, reaching a state of flamboyance that is striking. Seamless, with well-managed fine grain tannins and integrated acidity. Finishes long and scented. Tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was even better, continuing to pump out the pleasure at a welcome pace. The wine’s name reflects this, with Seabiscuit referring to the great horse that was initially mismanaged. 50% clone 113 and 50% clone 115 planted in shallow sandy soils. Picked at 24º brix. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Lovely dark berry melange on the nose with a spice box high note. Luscious core of blackberry and black raspberry fruit with a vivid mineral lift and impressive persistence on the finish. Still has plenty of tannin on board that will integrate with time. 14.7% alc., 100 cases, $70. This vineyard is located on Hwy 246 4.5 miles west of Zotovich Vineyard and just west of Clos Pepe Vineyard. This is the first close-planted vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and is managed by noted Central Coast viticulturist Jeff Newton. Owner John Hilliard is fanatical about meticulous farming and this is one of the most manicured vineyards in California. The 21-acre vineyard was planted over three years beginning in 2005 to Dijon clones 115, 667, 777 and 828, Pommard clone, and Calera selection. This wine contains primarily clone 115 with a tiny amount of 667. Paul says the incoming grapes were perfect and didn’t require sorting (“Like a well-kept woman”). Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Demure aromatics showing darker well-spiced cherry, berry and currant fruits with an underpinning of forest floor and underbrush. Earthy and mysterious on the palate with firm ripe tannins, a silky mouth feel, and some persistence on the aromatic finish. A lot to like in this young vines offering. Powerful black cherry and red licorice flavors, but silky smooth with tamed tannins. I didn’t write much about this wine in my notebook because it defied descriptives and I was stunned as I sampled it. It was the only wine I swallowed. In a word, spectacular. 75 cases, $75. · Paul tried to invoke his trademark elegance with this wine but it is still BIG. It is stacked and packed with blackberries, black raspberries, black plums, and cola, with a woodsy, toasty and grilled meat character. 14.8% alc., 100 cases, $75. Unfiltered. · Subdued aromas of black fruits, herbs and a trace of sweet oak. Earth-kissed red plum and boysenberry fruits with a slight candied cherry note and a subtle underpinning of herbs and oak. Velvety in the mouth with excellent length on the explosive finish. 14.7% alc., 125 cases, unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. An aged bouquet of dried dark cherry, prune, vegetation, leather boot and oak. Flavors of roasted fruit and raisin backed by nutty oak. 14.1% alc., 75 cases, $48. Full MLF, aged in 66% new French oak, unfiltered. · Pear and vanillin scents are augmented with notes of yeast and smoke. A rich but not cumbersome wine with full-on flavors of pears, lemons and the faintest oak. Smoke shows up on the finish. The overall impression is a juicy wine that is vivid and bright. A distinctive wine with woodsy and earthy dark stone fruits that are both lush and mysterious. Deft touch of oak and admirable corralling of tannins. 2006 Paul Lato “Suerte” Solomon Hills Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., $60. The Solomon Hills Vineyard is owned and farmed by the Miller family under the direction of vineyardist Greg Phelan. Paul proudly states on the back label, “For those who walk the walk.” · The aromas draw you in as you merrily sniff away. Crushed strawberries, spice, and even fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies waft from the glass. Great sweetness of red fruit highlighted by baking spices and brown sugar. 2006 Paul Lato “Sine Cera” Fiddlestix Vineyard Ste. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.7% alc., $65. Fiddlestix Vineyard consists of 97 acres of Pinot Noir of which the first plantings began in 1998. Located on the north side of a tight eastwest running valley, fog hangs over the vines until midmorning and the temperature barely rises above 75°F. The vineyard is farmed by Coastal Vineyard Care (Jeff Newton and Larry Finkle). Paul declassified 60% of the wine. · This wine is all about power with finesse. The Fiddlestix fruit can be foreboding, but Paul has tamed the beast beautifully. This wine is the “dark side” of Paul Lato. Very pleasing nose of black cherries and savory herbs. Great sweetness of dark red fruit which gets tastier and tastier in the glass over time. Powerful, yet very clean, pure and refreshing. This one has the bling without the weight. Gorgeous perfume and fruit, long, stylish and smooth in the mouth, this Pinot Noir delivers the sensuality and charisma that Pinot Noir so often promises, but rarely surrenders.
