2014 Sante Arcangeli Family Reserve “Selezione Susie” Mardikian Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.61, TA 0.62, 100 cases, $75. This vineyard is the estate vineyard of MacPhail Family Wines and is a close collaboration between winemaker James MacPhail and grower Jim Pratt. The vineyard was planted in 2009, with the first harvest in 2013. A unique feature of the vineyard is that it overlaps 3 AVAs: Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley and Green Valley of Russian River Valley. It is located only 4 miles from the Pacific Coast resulting in a strong maritime influence. Martini and 777 clones. Harvest Brix 25.5º. 100% destemmed. Native and cultured fermentations, aged on the lees in 30% new French oak barrels with weekly lees stirring for 3 months. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Deep aromas of black cherry coulis and vanilla pod. A showy wine, with pleasing flavors of dark cherries and purple berries accented with just the right note of oak and framed by soft, nearly invisible fine tannins. Powerfully flavored, yet elegant, with plush presence on the palate, and a generosity that persists through the attack and finish. A score magnet! Score: 93. Harvest Brix 22.7º-25.0º. 100% destemmed, 5-day cold soak, inoculated primary and native malolactic fermentations. Aged 16 months on the lees in French oak barrels, 35% new. Bottled unfined and lightly filtered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Heavenly scents of raspberry, black cherry and dried herbs lead off. Sleek, refined and polished in the mouth, with both weight of flavor and weightlessness. Savory spices and herbs compliment the red cherry and berry essence. Not the biggest hunk, but very seductive. Clones are 2A, 114, 667, 777, Martini and Pommard. 100% destemmed, 5-day cold soak, native and cultured fermentations, native malolactic fermentation in barrel, barronage weekly for 3 months, aged 16 months on lees in 100% French oak barrels, 35% new, bottled unfined and lightly filtered on August 19, 2014. · Moderately light cherry red color in the glass. Lovely aromas of cherry pie glaze, Asian 5-spice and a compliment of oak. Flavorful on the attack and soft and smooth on the mid palate, with a juicy core of cherry fruit. 2012 MacPhail Mardikian Estate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.77, TA 0.56, 283 cases, $85. Limited release November 2014. Harvest Brix 26.5º-26.7º. Pommard, Martini, Wädenswil 2A and 114 clones. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, native malolactic fermentation in barrels, battonage weekly for 3 months, aged 16 months sur lie in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose shows off a commendable balance between darker cherry and berry fruits and oak. Delicious mid weight core of black cherry goodness with hints of spice, cola and mocha and a whisper of oak.
