Plato said “Life is but a sojourn. Enjoy the best of it.” Craig Haserot (Founder and Ambassador)) and Erich Bradley Founder and Director of Winemaking) are two buddies who met on the tennis courts of Sonoma and decided to take Plato’s advice. They formed Sojourn Cellars in 2000 and released their first Pinot Noir in 2004. Their handcrafted wines have won considerable praise from the winepress.
Erich's family owned several acres in Sonoma County's Valley of the Moon. He studied winemaking at University of California Davis and Santa Rosa Junior College. His first job was with Dick Arrowood at Arrowood Winery. In 2003, he became the winemaker for Audelssa Estate Winery in Glen Ellen, initially working with noted winemaker David Ramey. He has received considerable praise from Robert Parker for his Bordeaux and Rhone inspired wines crafted there.
The wines are made at a custom crush facility in Santa Rosa, California. Erich's winemaking is New World in style and the resulting wines are bold and expressive. Two Pinot Noirs were produced in 2006: a Sonoma Coast appellation bottling and a Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Single vineyard Pinot Noirs have since been added from multiple Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast vineyards including Gap's Crown, Ridgetop, Walala, Wohler, Riddle, Reuling and Rodgers Creek Vineyards. Sojourn also releases a Home Ranch Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon and a Beckstoffer Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines are sold exclusively through their wine club and an allocated mailing list with limited restaurant and retail distribution.
Winemaking is very hands-off, using whole berry native fermentations in small open-tops, employing hand punch-downs, basket pressing, and the avoidance of pumps. The Pinot Noirs are unfined and unfiltered.
Tastings are done in an outdoor tasting garden in downtown Sonoma. By appointment only form 10:00 to 5:00 daily. The charge is $35 per person. 141 E Napa St., Sonoma. 707-933-9753. Virtual tastings are also offered.
Sojourn Cellars was sold to Sonoma Best Hospitality Group in 2020 following her purchase in January 2020 of the historic winery building that had formerly housed Ravenswood.
2019 Sojourn Wohler Vineyard Sonoma Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.55, 650 cases, $54. Release in August 2021. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of dusty Bing cherry and baking spice. Black cherry cola flavor is the base for this energetic wine that aims to please. Very modest tannins and some finishing length. 2019 Sojourn Riddle Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.55, 400 cases, $59. Release in August 2021. Pommard and Mt. Eden clones form the base of this wine. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. A little coaxing is necessary to release the aromas of cherry, blueberry and clay. A middleweight core of dark cherry and strawberry fruit flavors make an impression. There is a bit of savory spice and earthiness as well. 2019 Sojourn Sangiacomo Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., pH 3.62, TA 0.56, 700 cases, $59. Released spring 2021. Clones 115, Swan and Mt. Eden. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, purple grape, underbrush and oak spice.The succulent deep cherry core satisfies as does the soft mouthfeel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Reserved aromas of black cherry, savory spices and toasty oak. Rich, ripe and darkly fruited in a mid-weight plus style, served up on a lithe, polished frame with restrained tannins. The wine finishes with an effusive drive of spiced black cherry. 2019 Sojourn Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.6% alc., pH 3.59, TA 0;.57, 850 cases, $69. Released spring 2021. Vineyard is situated at 800 feet elevation with volcanic soils. Winds from the Petaluma Gap are frequent as are foggy nights. Clones 115 (planted in 2005 and the foundation of the wine), faux 828 (planted in 2002) and 667 (planted in 2004).10% whole cluster ferment. Aged in 40% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Pleasant aromas of blueberry-pomegranate, potpourri and mulch. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Easygoing aromas of blueberry-pomegranate, potpourri and mulch. A big boy, full-bodied wine with richly flavored blue and black fruits. Sleek in the mouth with modest, balancing tannins. The finish is modest in length but pleasing. 2019 Sojourn Reuling Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.66, TA 0.58, 400 cases, $69. Release in August 2021. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with the scent of dark cherry and white pepper. A mid-weight wine offering vivid flavors of black cherry and black raspberry with a gentle compliment of oak spice. Somewhat reserved with felty tannins and a persistent finish. When tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle, the wine was still giving up its charms grudgingly but was pleasant. 2019 Sojourn Ridgetop Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.56, TA 0.56, 400 cases, $69. Tiny clusters and small berry sizes in this vintage led to greater concentration in the finished wine. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose opens over time in the glass to reveal aromas of black cherry and baking spices. Somewhat reserved but still engaging in a mid-weight style with flavors of purple and black berry complimented with toasty oak. 2018 Sojourn Riddle Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.60, TA 0.60, 400 cases, $59. Released fall 2020. Vines planted at high density in Goldridge soil. Clones 115, faux 828, Pommard and Mt. Eden clones. 100% de-stemmed, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Very shy aromas of earthy dark fruits and toasty oak. Full-bodied, fruit-driven style featuring flavors of black raspberry, blueberry and pomegranate nicely spiced. Velvety in texture and some length on the mid-palate and finish. Ripe, teeth-staining fruit is not usually my cup of tea but this wine does satisfy in its own sturdy way. There is a hint of alcoholic warmth on the finish. Score: 92. 14.4% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.56, 400 cases, $59. Release fall 2020. Vineyard is owned and managed by Thomas Rivers Brown and Fred Schrader. A remote location near Annapolis at 1,000 feet elevation. Goldridge soils with a collection of sandstone and remnants of an ancient seabed. Clones 115, 667 and 777 fermented separately and then blended. 100% de-stemmed, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose offers pleasing aromas of dark berries, cassis and tilled earth. The essence of purple and black berry fruits is vivid and framed by cardamom spice. 2018 Sojourn Sangiacomo Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., pH 3.80, TA 0.59, 800 cases, $59. Released January 2020. Vineyard is located on Roberts Road at the base of Sonoma Mountain. Cool ocean breezes and Petaluma Gap fog allow for long hang time. Clones 115 (planted in 1998), 777 (planted in 1999), Swan and Mt. Eden. 100%-de-stemmed, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Really nice scent of purple grape and berry that is like the smell of opening a jar of Knott’s Berry Farm boysenberry jam. Mid-weight plus in style, with an array ofd purple berry fruits and added spice. Very fresh with minimal tannins and great harmony. The wine snakes across the palate with ease. I liked this aromatic nose offering scents of black cherry, blackberry, allspice, bay leaf and a touch of oak. Juicy, with uplifting, acid-driven freshness in a mid-weight style with flavors of purple and black berries. Reserved aromas of blue and black berries, grass and old wood. Midweight in style and creamy in texture, with an array of ripe dark fruits underlain with a smoky note. 14.4% alc., pH 3.65, TA 0.59, 425 cases, $69. Released fall 2020. Vineyard is perched on a small hillside at an elevation of 250 feet just off Highway 116 between Graton and Forestville. Goldridge soils. Clones are Calera and two suitcase selections from Vosne- Romanée. 100% de-stemmed. Three clones fermented separately and then blended prior to bottling. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Inviting aromas of blackest cherry, brioche, baking spice and oak stave. An array of dark red fruit flavors are gathered in a mid-weight plus style showing good energy and gentle tannins. The wine enters with intent but loses focus on exit. Score: 90. 2017 Sojourn Sonoma Coast Chardonnay
14.1% alc., pH 3.54, TA 0.64, 625 cases, $38. Release spring 2019. Old Wente clone and 95 clone from several vineyard sites. Whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented with lees stirring during the first three months of fermentation and aging. Malolactic fermentation complete. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. and blended to create a winemaker’s cuvée. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Fragrant with aromas of citrus, white peach, crème brûlée and white flower blossoms. Moderately rich, with ripe flavors of yellow peach and pear. Leading off are aromas of black cherry, spice, rose petal and tobacco ash. Juicy and silky on the palate in a mid weight style featuring a core of oak-kissed dark cherry. The aromas of lemon oil, pineapple, apple and pastry creme draw you into the glass. The lovely flavors of lemon and pineapple are engaging. Pommard is the foundation and some of it was fermented whole cluster. Some 777 clone as well. Native yeast fermentation. Aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Welcoming aromas of plum, black cherry, purple grape, blueberry and toast. Mid weight in extraction, with benevolent flavors of blue and purple fruits with an infusion of spice. The tannins are reserved, the oak is well integrated, and the fruit-driven finish has legs. Vineyard was harvested in multiple passes to best time ripening. 100% de-stemmed, native yeast fermentation in open-top fermenters, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in August 2018. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Highly aromatic with scents of dark cherry, cola and baking spices. Eden (the “secret sauce” in this wine) fermented separately. 100% de-stemmed, native yeast, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in August 2018. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Engaging aromas of red cherry and berry, baking spices and a savory note. Darker fruited on the palate, with glamorous flavors of black cherry, blueberry, boysenberry and spice that attack the palate with intent. Vigorous, but not intrusive tannins provide textural interest. The long finish will make your heart throb. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was even more expressive on the nose and palate and continued to exhibit the best finish in the lineup of wines tasted. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in August 2018. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is like great sex - hard to describe but a five-alarm sensation. Aromas of exotic spices, blue and black berries and lusty earth. Mid weight plus in style, with a silky fullness and richness that caresses the palate with blue and black berry flavors. Seamless, with a sleek, slightly tannic finish that urges another sip. A portion of clone “828” was fermented with stems and blended in, for an overall rate of 10% whole cluster. Native yeast fermentation, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is quite earthbound, offering scents of clay, compost, dusty earth and iron along with blackberry fruit. Flavors of very ripe blueberry and blackberry with a hint of allspice, framed by modest tannins. Nicely composed with a generous finish, but doesn’t emote like Gap’s bottling usually does. Score: 90. Aromas of dark red and blue berries, spice, and mushrooms on the grill. Mid weight in style, and offering earthy, even animale notes infusing the chewy cherry and blueberry fruit flavors. 2017 Sojourn Walala Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.6% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.57, 575 cases, $69. Release spring 2019. This vineyard is situated at 1,200 feet elevation just inland from the Pacific Ocean near the coastal town of Annapolis. The maritime climate here creates an extreme growing microclimate that requires precise viticulture. Clones 113, 115 and “828.” Native yeast fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, and aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The aromas arrive instantly and persist in the glass, including dark red cherry and berry and fertile earth. As typical with this vineyard, the wine sports a bold core of succulent black raspberry and plummy fruit. There is an appealing earthiness as well and the oak is well integrated. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Very giving aromas of Bing cherry, blueberry, spice and cigar box. Good weight and juiciness in a forward style featuring a luscious for of black cherry and spice flavors. Nicely composed with integrated moderately toasty oak and a solid finish. A deft AVA offering. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of ripe Bing cherry, ripe strawberry and oak barrel. Mid weight plus flavors of well-ripened dark stone fruits, black raspberry, cola, dark chocolate and dark toffee. The foundation of this wine is two blocks of Pommard clone with clone 777 adding a layer of bright fruit. 15% whole cluster. Open-top fermentation, native yeast, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, blueberry, spice, underbrush and subtle smoke draw the drinker in. Young clones of 2A, “828,” 115 and 667 in Goldridge soil. 100% de-stemmed, open-top fermentation using native yeast. The clones were fermented separately. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Shy aromas of red berry jam, Bing cherry and dusty oak. A pleasant enough, mid weight styled wine with fruit flavors of black cherry and strawberry framed by a compliment of oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Appealing aromas of blackberry fruit, animale, spice and sous bois. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry jam, briar and woodland spice. The biggest, baddest wine in the lineup, with a sappy core of well-ripened purple and black fruits that saturate the palate with goodness. 14.2% alc., pH 3.48, TA 0.56, 150 cases, $69. Vineyard planted in 2000 under direction of Mark Aubert and Peter Michael Winery. 12.2 acres of Pinot Noir and 2.2 acres of Chardonnay. The Chardonnay originated from the famed Montrachet Vineyard in Burgundy. Sandy Goldridge soils. Whole cluster pressed, native yeast, barrel fermented, 100% malolactic fermentation, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Rather austere nose initially, opening in the glass over time to offer aromas of lemon rind, fresh peach and. Rich and creamy on the palate with delicious flavors of golden apple, lemon, pear, honey and nut oil. This wine is eager to send a message of pleasure and easily seduces the senses. Dreamy balance makes for effortless drinking. The quenching finish is lively and spirited. A nose of complexity, showing aromas of black cherry, wild dark berry, spice, undergrowth, floral bouquet and a hint of sweet oak. A wine of great fortitude the palate, with waves of boysenberry, blackberry and pomegranate fruits that hang on through an extended luscious finish. Highly aromatic upon opening, with scents of cherry, pomegranate, spice, earthy flora and peat. The wine is a combination of clone 95 from Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard and Old Wente clone from Sangiacomo Vella Ranch and Green Acres. Whole cluster pressed, fermented slowly in French oak barrels using native yeast, lees stirring the first three months, and aged in French oak barrels, 30% new. Malolactic fermentation allowed to progress as far as it desired. Bottled unfined. · Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. This wine is styled in a more vibrant, bright style. Since 2008, Sojourn has worked with this vineyard sits high on a ridge in the Petaluma Gap, taking the full brunt of wind and thick fog that define this cool climate zone. Soils are volcanic ash on steep inclines. The foundation of the wine is Pommard clone that underwent 15% whole cluster fermentation, with some clone 777 that was de-stemmed. Barrels from the Bertranges forest was used to offer earthy umami characteristics that enhance the earth and mushroom notes of the Pommard clone in this wine. Open-top fermentation with native yeast, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Deep aromas of earthy cherry fruit with a hint of stem and sandalwood. Inviting marriage of ripe black cherry and blackberry fruits with savory hints of earth and mushroom. Clones are Wädenswil 2A, 115, 667 and “828” planted in Goldridge soil. 100% de-stemmed, open-top native fermentation, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. Shy, but pleasing aromas of cherry and sandalwood that pick up intensity over time in the glass. Like cherry pie day at baking class, with a discreetly concentrated core of fresh red cherries and baking spices. Quite elegant and charming, with a silky countenance, weightless tannins, and cherry goodness that hangs on at the finish. The lightest weighted wine in the 2014 lineup, but one that I liked more and more as I tasted it over time in the glass. It seemed to sneak up on me and give up its charms slowly. Score: 93. 2015 Sojourn Ridgetop Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.58, 200 cases, $59. This is one of those secluded west Sonoma Coast vineyards that is very hard to get to. It is owned and managed by Thomas Rivers Brown and Fred Schrader with Ulises Valdez caring for the vineyard. It is surrounded by redwood trees at 1,100 feet elevation. This is unique site, located near Annapolis, is rather tropical. Yields are miniscule with concentrated flavors as vines struggle to grow in Goldridge loam soil and remnants of ancient seabed. Clones 115, 667 and 777 were fermented separately. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Soaring aromas of dark red cherry and berry with a compliment of spice and sous-bois. Exotic and foresty in the mouth, with engaging flavors of purple berries, pomegranate, blueberry and pine needle. Gentle in demeanor, with well integrated oak, and a juicy, persistent finish. 14.6% alc., pH 3.47, TA 0.64, 768 cases, $69. Release spring 2017. This vineyard is located on Roberts Road just above the Sangiacomo Vineyard yet the wines it produces are completely different. The base of the wine is clone 115 and 667, with small amounts of “828” that was whole cluster pressed and blended in for an overall total of 10% whole cluster. The 667 grown here produces very small berries and potent concentration so it is used judiciously. The vineyard typically delivers fruit richness, robust tannins and ample acidity and Erich must fight to tone the wine down. In 2015, tiny berries resulted in high levels of concentration. Clones fermented separately and aged separately before blending. Small amount of whole cluster. Open-top fermentation with native yeast and aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Hi-tone aromas of purple berries, spice and earthy flora soar from the glass with swirling. A mid weight plus core of luscious boysenberry and blueberry fruits brings the palate to attention. The vineyard sits on a spectacular ridge located 1,200 feet above sea level, just inland from the Pacific Ocean near the coastal town of Annapolis. Clones 113, 115, 777 and “828,” are planted in gravelly loam soils.The vineyard rarely is warmer than 80ºF but the elevation gives the vines ample sunlight and there has not been a problem getting grapes to ripen. 100% de-stemmed, open-top fermentation with native yeast, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Whole cluster pressed and barreled down, native yeast fermentation and 100% malolactic fermentation. Aged in 40% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Shy, but pleasing mineral-inflected nose with added scents of citrus peel and vanilla. 2014 Sojourn Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.68, TA 0.57, 775 cases, $48. Released spring 2016. This vineyard is located in the Petaluma Gap high on a ridge. Some whole cluster fermented Pommard clone is blended with clone 777. 15% whole cluster. Native yeast fermentation, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in July 2015. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is more savory than fruity, offering aromas of potpourri with redder fruits in the background. The intense attack of perfectly ripened cherry fruit is almost numbing, yet the wine is focused and refined. There is plenty of savory spices and a light hand with oak. This wine is sourced from five distinct blocks planted to clones 667, “828,” 115, 777 and 2A. Clones were vinified separately. 100% de-stemmed. Open-top fermentation with native yeasts, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. An array of pleasing aromas arrive in the glass, including black cherry, cola and spice. Noticeably sappy on the palate, with opulent flavors of spiced Bing cherry, purple berries, mocha, and cola. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple hue in the glass. Beautifully perfumed with hi-tone scents of dark berry jam and Asian 5-spice. Mid weight plus in style with a strong physique, yet charming and nimble. The dark berry core really grabs on to the mid palate and holds through a fruit-laden finish. Vineyard is owned and managed by Thomas Rivers Brown, Fred Schrader and Ulises Valdez and is located in the northern Sonoma Coast near Annapolis. The site is surrounded by redwoods at about 1,100 feet elevation. There is a notable maritime influence, with fog ever present and receding each day. Clones 115, 667 and 777 blended together after being separately fermented in open-tops with native yeast. Aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Gorgeous aromas of strawberry cherry and rose petal. Intriguing on the palate with a charge of black cherry, black raspberry, blueberry and spice flavors delivering a real mouthful of pleasure. The intoxicating nose is complex, offering scents of cherry, strawberry, spice, earth and exotic bouquet. A vibrant wine on the palate that features well-spiced redder fruits framed by poised acidity and toned tannins. Silky in texture, and deftly balanced, with an intensely fruited finish reminiscent of a perfectly ripened, sweet strawberry. This wine is the best I have ever tasted from this vineyard. Score: 95. Native yeast fermentation in open-top vats, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Heady aromas of black cherry, sous-bois, woodland and nutty oak. Both fruity and savory on the velvety palate, with flavors of black cherry and dark red raspberry enhanced with a light tough of toasty oak. A subtle savory herbal imprint runs in the background. A blend from several vineyards including Sangiacomo Vella and Green Acres ranches, Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard, Durell Vineyard, and Campbell Ranch Vineyard. Each component was fermented separately with native yeast in French oak barrels, 30% new and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. Regular lees stirring was performed during the first three months of fermentation and aging. After 11 months, the components were blend to create a winemaker’s cuvée, and bottled unfined. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas of lemon cake, nutty spread and floral bouquet. Some richness of lemon, honey and caramel flavor with a noticeable oak overlay. Slightly creamy, finishing with a subtle saline note. Score: 89. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Very fragrant with vibrant aromas of black cherry, raspberry, cardamom spice and a hint of toast and smoke. This vineyard was replanted in 2006 and is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley within sight of the historic Wohler Bridge. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is shy initially, but opens slightly over time to reveal inviting aromas of Bing cherry and cola. Bright dark cherry and dark raspberry flavor in a mid weight style with deep oak seasoning in the background. The tannins are balanced, and the wine finishes with some enjoyable cherry cola goodness. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Reticent, but pleasing aromas of blackberry jam, black grapes and sweet oak. Silky in the mouth with layers of black raspberry, blackberry and black cherry fruits that are saucy and lush. The fine tannins are well integrated and the right touch of oak adds interest. The foundation of this wine is Pommard clone, a 15% portion of which is fermented whole cluster. Clone 777 is blended in. Aged in 50% new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. Whole cluster plays a role in this wine with noticeable floral and exotic spice aromas evident on the nose and a slight vegetative, mushroom note underlying the middleweight core of earth-kissed cherry fruit. Aromas of Bing cherry, cola, spice and sweet oak. The mid weight core of cherry fruit is blessed with hints of cola and spice, and the wine’s velvety mouth feel is very comforting and seductive. Fine-grain tannins show up on the finish. This wine has plenty of youthful bright fruit that can’t be ignored, but this is not a luscious Russian River Valley fruit bomb. Nicely perfumed with aromas of black cherry, baking spice and toast. Smooth and harmonious on the palate, with layers of flavor including black cherry, black raspberry, sassafras, and spice. The toasty oak is nicely integrated, the tannins are supple and the wine finishes with respectable intensity. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple hue in the glass. The perfume draws you into the glass with aromas of darker plum and berry with notes of balsam and salt air. Delicious middleweight core of vibrant plum, black cherry, berry and cola flavors clothed in soft, lacy tannins, finishing with a lingering memory of cherry liquor. 2011 Sojourn Cellars Silver Eagle Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.68, TA 0.56, 175 cases, $59. Release fall 2013. Inaugural vintage for this 30-acre vineyard farmed by Ulises Valdez that is located in the Green Valley AVA north of Occidental and at the western edge of the Sonoma Coast. Pommard clone, and Calera and Vosne-Romanee selections were sourced from a low-vigor section of the vineyard. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Frgrant with aromas of red fruit, particularly cherry, and sandalwood. An elegant wine that is light on its feet with tasty flavors of cherries, raspberries and cranberries accented with baking spice and oak. Forward, easy to drink, with plenty of pinotosity, but not enough fruit singing. A little better when tasted later in the day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Good (+). 2008 Sojourn Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., pH 3.72, 550 cases, $39. A blend from several vineyards in the Sonoma Coast AVA including the Fedrick Vineyard, Windsor Oaks Vineyard and Sangiacomo Vineyard. All Dijon clones (115, 667, 777). · Very lovely scents of black raspberries, cassis and underbrush. A strikingly smooth and easy going wine featuring the redder spectrum of Pinot fruits including strawberries and raspberries with a hint of sassafras. The tannins are very supple and the whole package is perfectly harmonious. I could sip this one all night. 2008 Sojourn Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.7% alc., pH 3.63, 440 cases, $48. This vineyard is located on Roberts Road just above the Sangiacomo Vineyard on the west-facing slopes of Sonoma Mountain in the Petaluma Gap. · Nuanced aromatics featuring notes of spiced plums, pine pitch, wooded forest and a little good funk. Intense and concentrated darker fruits are set off by a hint of white pepper and oak. Very smoothly textured with a pleasing fruity persistence on the finish. Not as expressive now as the other 2008 Sojourn wines and needs to shed some tannin. This wine has a way to go before it completely reveals itself. That said, the wine possesses obvious potential. 2008 Sojourn Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., pH 3.66, 580 cases, $48. This vineyard is located at the western base of Sonoma Mountain. Clones 115 and 777 are from blocks that are more than ten years old. · Plenty of Pinot singing here beginning with enticing aromas of mixed berry jam and spice box including cardamon. Delicious rainbow of berry fruits discreetly concentrated and beautifully layered. Silky smooth in the mouth with remarkable persistence on the aromatic finish. 2007 Sojourn Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.6% alc., $47. This vineyard is located on west-facing slopes of Sonoma Mountain, where the winds and cool fog from the Petaluma Gap are frequently evident. The vineyard is owned and farmed by Premier Pacific Vineyards. Multiple wineries source from this large vineyard of about 140 acres planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pinot Noir clones are Swan, 114, 115, 667, 777 and 828 on four different rootstocks. · Really attractive nose composed of bright black cherries, red plums and a dusting of oak. Black cherry and black raspberry fruits cascade easily through the palate complimented by a vein of citric peel and vanillin. Moderately rich with good purity of flavor and a refined mouth feel. 2005 Sojourn Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.6% alc., 240 cases, $36. This wine is a blend of grapes from two Sangiacomo Vineyards - Roberts Road and Vella. · A medium-bodied Pinot Noir which needs air time to express itself. The nose is replete with rhubarb, exotic woods, toast and Xmas spice. The ripe Pinot fruits tend to the dark flavors and are rustic and tart. 2005 Sojourn Cellars Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., 230 cases, $48. The Sangiacomo Vineyard that supplies the grapes for this wine in Cotati in the cool northern end of the Petaluma Gap. The wine is a blend of Dijon clones 115 and 777. · The nose is shy initially and needs plenty of swirling. Xmas spice, especially cinnamon, and leather become apparent. The flavors tend toward darker fruits with a hint of raisin. There is more richness in the mid-palate and the finish than the wine above and the alcohol is better integrated. 2004 Sojourn Cellars Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Owner Craig Hasserot and winemaker Erich Bradley craft this excellent Pinot Noir that has been reviewed in the PinotFile favorably in the past. Tasting the wine in a blind lineup confirms my previous attraction to it. · This wine has shed some weight since last tasted and is quite lovely now. Plenty of flamboyant oak and smoke in the nose.
