2015 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

14.2% alc., $40. Released September 2016. A blend of grapes from multiple established vineyards including Dutton, Durell and Gap’s Crown, and young vineyards like Mark Sanchietti’s Pleasant Hill Vineyard that was planted for Patz & Hall. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged on lees with weekly stirring in 32% new French oak barrels. 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. This is a very crisp, uplifting and agreeable wine offering fresh aromas and flavors of cut apple and pear, along with gracious integration of oak. 2015 Patz & Hall Zio Tony Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

14.2% alc., 496 cases, $65. Released October 2016. This is a well-known vineyard planted by the Martinelli family. Patz & Hall has produced a Chardonnay from this vineyard since 2003. 100% Dijon 76 clone. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on lees with weekly stirring in 50% new French oak barrels. 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. Bottled without filtration. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas and flavors of lemon, pineapple, yellow apple, melon and toasty oak combine in a full body styled wine that has a comforting mouthfeel and admirable balance, finishing with a bit of tannin. 2014 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

$40. Released July 2015. This bottling is made from a “who’s who” of outstanding winegrowing sites. Recently, Patz & Hall started to use grapes from Gap’s Crown Vineyard and Sanchietti Vineyard Pleasant Hill (planted specifically for Patz & Hall) in this bottling. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on the lees with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 35% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. Very nicely perfumed with scents of lemon, honey, crème brûlée and brioche holding up over time in the glass. Slightly creamy on the palate and moderately rich in flavor with oak enhanced notes of citrus and peach. Good cut with a slightly tart lemon-driven finish that is a bit cloying. Score: 89. 2014 Patz & Hall Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

14.2% alc., $44. A blend of older plantings in western Sonoma County including heritage clones and selections. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on lees with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in French oak barrels, 38% new. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Clean aromas of petrichor, banana creme, jasmine and peach. Simple, but satisfying, with a supple mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and bright flavors of lemon, pineapple and nutty oak. Score: 89. 2014 Patz & Hall Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

14.2% alc., 6,500 cases, $44. A blend of multiple heritage clones such as Wente, Robert Young, Rued, Wente 4 and the Spring Mountain clone. Aged in French oak barrels, 40% new. 100% malolactic fermentation. Bottled unfiltered. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Clean aromas of petrichor, white peach, green apple, banana cream and honeysuckle. Supple in the mouth, with straightforward flavors of lemon, pineapple and mango embellished with driving acidity. 2014 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., $46. A consistent performer in each vintage sourced from several vineyards including Dutton Ranch, Martinelli Family, and Chenoweth Vineyard. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The initial aromas of underbrush, earthy flora and smoke give way to dark fruit scents over time in the glass. Silky on the palate, with a discreetly concentrated core of earthy black cherry and blueberry-pomegranate flavors sprinkled with complimentary oak. 2014 Patz & Hall Hudson Vineyard Carneros Chardonnay

14.2% alc., $55. From a 3-acre block planted to the Hudson-Wente selection isolated by Lee Hudson. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged on lies with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in French oak barrels, 45% new. Bottled without filtration. · Moderately golden yellow with a slight haze in the glass. Mild burnt match reduction upon opening that resolves over time in the glass revealing aromas of lemon rind, yellow apple, and vanilla. Delicious flavors of lemon pie, vanilla creme and brioche. Nicely crafted with a classy demeanor, finishing with uncommon length for a California Chardonnay. The wine still seems slightly reductive, tight and holding back at this stage. Score: 92. 2014 Patz & Hall Chenoweth Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 1,284 cases, $60. Released October 2016. In 2000, famed viticulturist Charlie Chenoweth worked with James Hall to plant his family’s homestead estate in the cool Green Valley sub-AVA of the Russian River Valley exclusively for Patz & Hall (Chenoweth and a select few other wineries make wine from this vineyard as well). The 7-acre vineyard has an assortment of Dijon clones planted in Goldridge sandy loam soils. The vineyard is a warm site in a cool region. Wild and cultured yeast fermentation, aged in 70% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of compost, spice, dark chocolate and shy fruit arrive slowly in the glass over several hours. Mid weight flavors of black cherry and black raspberry with noticeable oak overlay. Very pretty fruit that has great intensity and length, becoming more appealing over several hours in the glass. 2014 Patz & Hall Jenkins Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 1,342 cases, $60. This 18-acre vineyard source is located in Sebastopol. Clones 667 and 777 are planted in Goldridge sandy loam. Aged in about 60% new French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of black raspberry, spice, game and nutty barrel lead off. Aggressive attack of black raspberry and ollaliberry fruit flavors with an infusion of oak. Ripe, firm tannins, with a finish fueled with black grape aromatic essence. 2014 Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Napa Carneros Chardonnay

14.2% alc., 1,321 cases, $65. Release October 2016. Several sections of Hyde Vineyard were planted exclusively for Patz & Hall. Patz & Hall has made single-vineyard Chardonnay from Hyde Vineyard since 1996. Hyde-Wente selection is planted on the best soil at Hyde Vineyard that is well-drained, sandy, clay loam. The result is lower yields that are even lower than usual for this small-berried clone. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged on the lees with weekly stirring in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled without filtration. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. This is a particularly complex wine that is full of sunlight and offers something different with each sip. Nicely perfumed with scents of citrus, blood orange, Granny Smith apple and flint. Flavors of lemon and white orchard fruits are interwoven with supportive toasty oak. Uncommon attack and mid palate intensity with balancing mouthwatering acidity that leaves a lasting impression of juiciness. 2014 Patz & Hall Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 1,075 cases, $70. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Oak is at the forefront of this wine with very little fruit showing up on the nose. The mid weight core of black cherry and black raspberry fruit is buried in aggressive tannins and oak char. 2014 Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 315 cases, $75. Released October 2016. This vineyard was planted by the Martinelli family and Patz & Hall has been making a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Burnside Vineyard since 2002. Clones 115 and 777. Wild and cultured yeast fermentation, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of dark berry mash, spice and toast lead to a mid weight styled wine with flavors of oak-infused blackberry and black grape with a touch of spice. A bit rugged and barrel-laden upon opening with some astringency. Much better six hours later and also the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, showing less tannin and oak overlay and more charm. Score: 91. 2014 Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Carneros Pinot Noir

Sourced from three small blocks within the larger Hyde Vineyard combining new and older plantings of the Hyde-Calera selection and include coveted grapes from the “old field.” Patz & Hall has sourced grapes from Hyde Vineyard since 1995 and several sections of the vineyard are planted exclusively for Patz & Hall. 10% whole clusters, wild and cultured yeast fermentation, aged in French oak barrels, 60% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Intoxicating perfume of black cherry, pomegranate, black grape juice and sweet oak. Full-bodied, with earthy flavors of black raspberry, blackberry and black cherry framed by slightly grainy tannins and complimentary oak. A very honorable wine with a succulent mid palate, a silky mouthfeel and a palate-staining finish. Even better when re-tasted later in the day from a previously opened bottle. 2014 Patz & Hall Pisoni Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

752 cases, $90. Includes grapes from vines that date to the 1980s. Patz & Hall has bottled a Pisoni vineyard designate since 1997. Wild and cultured yeast fermentation, 12% whole clusters, aged in French oak barrels, 70% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of well-ripened black fruits and terra-cotta lead to a full-bodied explosion of black berry and boysenberry fruit on entry. A masculine wine that offers palate-staining fruit along with muscular, yet polished tannins, that corral the sappy fruit core. The oak is nicely balanced and the alcohol peeks out only slightly. This vineyard always produces distinctive wines that have a Pisoni stamp that are consistent across many producers. It is rare to find such a comparable terroir-driven example in California. 14.5% alc., 20 cases. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and pie spices are encased in muscular tannins that create an astringent finish. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged in 100% French oak barrels, 38% new, sur lie, with weekly stirring. 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. Very inviting aromas of yellow peach, almond spread and lemon curd. Appealing richness and softness on the palate with lip-smacking flavors of yellow peach, lemon pie, and honey. 14.4% alc., $46. Released April 2015. Sourced from an array of vineyards in Green Valley, Sonoma Valley and the Russian River Valley. Gap’s Crown Vineyard is a key part of this wine. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, aged in 100% French oak barrels, 40% new, bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderately dark reddish purple hue in the glass. Bold and outspoken, this wine features aromas and flavors of dark berries, purple grapes, grilled beef and smoked jerky. A little more richness and softness that the Hudson bottling, and more Russian River Valley in character, The flavors of yellow peach are accented with a hint of smoke, toast, and saline. Bright aromas of lemon, pear and brioche lead to a potpourri of apple, pear and citrus flavors that arrive with aplomb. 14.2% alc., 375 cases, $55. Released March 2015. Vineyard established by grower and horticulturist Lee Hudson in the 1980s. Sourced since 2005 from the same block that Hudson uses for own Chardonnay. Hudson-Wente selection (isolated by Lee Hudson). Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new, sur lie, with weekly stirring. 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. Unfiltered. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. The nose is flat-out gorgeous, featuring hi-tone aromas of fresh lemon, pear and buttery brioche. Apple, citrus, pear and honey flavors arrive with aplomb leaving behind a vibrant citrus note on the bright and engaging finish. 14.2% alc., 1,347 cases, $60. Released October 2015. This 7-acre vineyard is planted in Goldridge soils on the far western edge of the Russian River Valley in the Green Valley AVA. Dijon clones. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole cluster, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 70% new French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Deep aromas of black cherry and dark berries with a hint of forest floor and oak. Plenty to like in this beautifully composed wine, awash in tasty blackberry and pomegranate goodness framed by balanced fruit tannins. 1,161 cases, $60. Hyde-Wente selection planted on the best soils at Hyde: very low vigor and extremely well-drained sandy, clay loam. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on lees with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrels, aged in 45% new French oak barrels, bottled without filtration. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas and flavors of lemon creme, cut apple and grapefruit in this acid-driven wine with obvious class. The right touch of toasty oak is complimentary, and the cleansing finish is uplifting. Goldridge series gravelly loam soils planted to Dijon 667 and 777 in 2001 by renowned vineyard manager Charlie Chenoweth. 10% whole clusters. Wild and cultured fermentations. Aged in 100% French oak barrels, 60% new. Bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries fill the glass. It is located in the heart of the Green Valley of Russian River Valley. 100% Dijon clone 76, grown in Goldridge sandy loam soils. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on lees with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 50% new French oak barrels, bottled without filtration. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. The nose is noticeably steely, with accessory aromas of lemon, green apple and peach syrup. A reserved, but pleasing style, with flavors of lemon curd and pear framed by juicy acidity, a slightly viscous mouthfeel, finishing with a lemon drop lift. Score: 90. 2013 Patz & Hall Gap’s Crown Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 1,028 cases, $70. Released March 2015. This vineyard was first planted in 2002 in the foothills of Sonoma Mountain in the Petaluma Gap region and is now owned by Bill Price. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole clusters, aged in 100% French oak barrels, 65% new. Unfined and unfiltered. · Dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of purple berries and spice gain intensity over time in the glass. Fleshy and flavorful, with an abundance of fruit, yet soft on the palate with exemplary elegance. Fine-grain tannins add textural interest, there is commendable integration of oak, and the tasty finish seems to last forever. This virile beauty was kissed by an angel. Score: 94. 2013 Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Carneros Napa Valley Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., 1,079 cases, $70. Released October 2015. Sourced from a block that contains new and older plantings of the Hyde-Calera selection, and includes grapes from the “old field.” Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole cluster, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 60% new French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. · Medium reddish purple color in the glass. Purple and black fruits are featured in this wine which combines savory notes of mushroom and soy sauce with the mid weight fruit flavors. The mouthfeel is silky and the character is refined, although there is a noticeable tug of oak. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle, with wine’s seamless and smooth texture was striking, and the oak overlay reduced. 13.5% alc., 269 cases, $75. This vineyard is located just west of Sebastopol and farmed by the Martinelli family. Primarily Dijon clone 115 with a small amount of 777. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole cluster, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 60% new French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, raspberry and good barnyard lead off. Somewhat luscious black cherry and boysenberry fruits are well balanced by polished tannins and energetic acidity. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was more enjoyable in all respects with plenty of spicy sweet fruit emerging. Score: 90. 14.5% alc., $46. 25th vintage. Released September 2013. The core of fruit for this wine is from Gap’s Crown Vineyard. Grapes are also sourced from Dutton Ranch, the Martinelli family, Charlie Chenoweth and Steve Hill. Wild and cultured yeast, aged in 42% new Burgundian French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. · Moderately dark reddish-purple hue in the glass. Vibrant aromas of raspberry and blackberry, spice and rose petal leap out of the glass, becoming more intense over time in the glass. Deeply flavored on the palate with an earth-kissed array of dark fruits, encased in muscular, but not harsh tannins. 15.4% alc., 957 cases, $55. Released March 2014. This 18-acre vineyard is located two miles west of Sebastopol on Pleasant Hill Road (Sebastopol Hills). Goldridge sandy loam soil planted to Dijon 667 and 777. Vineyard planted by Charlie Chenoweth in 2001. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations. 15% whole cluster. Aged in 66% new French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. A very appealing nose filled with savory goodness including mushroom and sous-bois complimented by aromas of dark raspberry, blackberry and spice. Mid to full-bodied with a tenacious palate of purple and black berries complimented by oak. There is plenty of balancing structure to match the sappy fruit, and the finish is powerful and lasting. 2012 Patz & Hall Chenoweth Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.8% alc., 925 cases, $60. This vineyard is farmed exclusively for Patz & Hall who have produced a vineyard-designated Pinot Noir since 2004. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Heavenly aromas of dark stone and berry fruits with a hint of spice, mocha and vanillin. Intensely flavored with a sappy core of sweet boysenberry, blackberry and pomegranate fruits framed by muscular tannins. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the tannins had noticeably softened. Cellar this beauty for a celebration down the line. Score: 91. Several sections of the vineyard were planted exclusively for Patz & Hall. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. This is a top performer, with glorious aromas of black cherry, raspberry, cowhide and floral shop. A burly wine with a hedonistic load of earthy black cherry, boysenberry and cassis flavors that really sparkle. The velvety texture is seductive, oak seasoning is spot on, and the sweet cherry finish leaves a big impression. There are substantial ripe tannins that should mellow with some cellaring. 13.2% alc., 425 cases, $75. This vineyard is farmed by the Martinelli’s and Patz & Hall has produced Pinot Noir from this source since 2001. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with hi-tone scents of crushed dark red berries, black cherry and brioche. The mid weight flavors echo the nose with an added hint of smoke and herbs. The engaging fruit comes to the front over time in the glass. A bit rustic and rugged upon opening, with a rush of tannins, but showing much better harmony and refinement the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Wild and cultured yeast fermentation aged in 65% new Burgundian French oak barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Reluctant aromas of black cherry, dark berry, loam and bramble. Very smooth and velvety on the palate with moderately rich flavors of dark berries and plum, finishing with a touch of green herbs. 13.6% alc., 220 cases, $70. From a vineyard planted to clone 115 in Goldridge soil by the Martinelli family on a site that was a former hillside apple orchard. Burnside was picked at the last minute before the rains, and at 13.6%, is one of the lowest alcohol Pinot Noirs Patz & Hall has ever produced. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations, 15% whole clusters, aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration. · Dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is entirely oak-driven initially with no fruit evident. Full-bodied flavors of oak-kissed black cherry and blackberry, with a hint of licorice-laced cola. Somewhat of a brut of a wine that currently lacks personality. The fruit that does peek out seems quite pretty and there is some finishing persistence. Shy and nondescript with delicate aromas of spiced dark berries, underbrush and hickory. Big-boned core of dark berry, black stone, and Hoison sauce flavors buried by aggressive tannins. 2006 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.2% alc., $34. · This wine is all about black cherry and black raspberry fruit with a healthy dose of oak. It is an in-your-face gulp of fruit that will appeal to lovers of this style. There are still some unresolved tannins (the wine is quite young and one of the first wines released each vintage - rushed to the market because of the huge demand). 2006 Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Carneros Pinot Noir

14.8% alc., $60. · Scents of berries, oak char and barnyard. Pretty core of berry fruit with an oak sidecar. Some charm and persistence on the finish which leaves a touch of heat in its wake. 2005 Patz & Hall Pisoni Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

14.6% alc., $65. · Noticeably lighter in color than most of the other Pisoni Vineyard wines. Attractive scents of brambly cherries, sage, herbs and faint oak. The flavor emphasis is on dark red berries with an underpinning of savory herbs. Smooth and relatively light in weight with soft tannins. This is the first release from this vineyard located in the hills above Green Valley in Sonoma County. The planting is all Dijon clones. I tasted this wine on several occasions in the last year without much of an impression for me, but now it has finally come around. · Red fruits and a bouquet of roses in the nose. 2004 Patz & Hall Chenowith Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

692 cases, $47. Patz & Hall have been making highly-coveted Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays for years. The wines are a joint effort between winemakers James Hall and Anne Moses and the sales and marketing team of Donald and Heather Patz. This is the first release from this vineyard located in the hills above Green Valley. The planting is all Dijon clones. The winery opened a wine tasting salon in Napa which is available for private and seated tasting by reservation for $35 (85 Bordeaux Way, Suite A, Napa, 707-265-7700). · The wine has an attractive deep purple robe. Lovely aromas of cherries, cola and spice waft from the glass. I wanted to drink the nose. The flavors follow in step but are restrained in comparison to the nose.
