The famed Bien Nacido Vineyard has been bottling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under their Estate label since 2011. Grapes for this wine come from own-rooted, 45-year-old vines planted in shale with limestone outcroppings. This W Block of Chardonnay is the oldest block at Bien Nacido Vineyard, planted in 1973 to the original Wente clone. Whole cluster pressed, native fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, and aged sur lie 16 months in French oak barrels (25% new) and stainless steel. Bottled unfiltered. A tasting room for Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills Estate wines is located in downtown Los Olivos. Note: I did taste the 2016 Bien Nacido Estate Santa Maria Pinot Noir ($50) but cannot give it a recommendation since I found the oak barrel work to be overbearing. Excellent restraint and edginess on the palate with flavors of grapefruit, lemon rind and lime shot through with an arrow of spirited acidity. The scent of dark red cherry and berry, oak spice and floral perfume leads to a mid-weight infusion of oak-kissed Bing cherry and dark strawberry fruit flavors. 2017 Tyler Bien Nacido Vineyard - N Block Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.2% alc., $90. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is dominated by toasted oak aroma with a hint of cherry in the rear. Light to mid-weight in style, offering flavors of black cherry, blackberry, and savory herbs. The fruit load is shallow on both the mid palate and finish. Suave in the mouth and easy to drink, but the aggressive barrel presence spoils the experience. Score: 86. 2016 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.64, TA 0.60, 14,720 cases,$30. Grapes for this wine are sourced from some of the finest vineyards on the Central Coast including Solomon Hills, Sierra Madre, Bien Nacido, Garys’, Laetitia and Pedregal vineyards. Average harvest Brix 24.5º. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 10% new and 90% neutral. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Enchanting aromas of dusty cherry, violets and rose petal initially, but with time in the glass, oak takes over and char aroma appears. Mid weight plus flavors of black cherry, purple berry and cola with an overcoat of oak. Plenty of well-ripened fruit stuffing that carries through the finish, but the aggressive oak imprint detracts. 2016 Au Bon Climat Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $40. This bottling is part of the winery’s Santa Barbara Historic Vineyards Collection. Much of the fruit that Au Bon Climat sources is fruit that has been planted “exclusively” for the winery. 50% Block 2 and 50% Block 11. Main clones are 667 and 115. 50% whole clusters. Aged 18 months in Francois Frères French oak barrels, 80% new. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Shy, but pleasing aromas of black cherry and tender oak. A very giving wine on the palate, with a gorgeous core of black cherry fruit in a mid weight style. Silky, with polished tannins, a slight savory, dried leaf character, and a seductive grip of cherry on the finish. An impeccably balanced wine that is drinking perfectly now. Score: 94. 2016 Gary Farrell Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.3% alc., pH 3.38, TA 0.69, 719 cases, $70. Released September 2018. The winery has sourced fruit from this vineyard for more than 20 years, and is one of the fortunate few to source some of the Pommard selection from the legendary Q Block, the most prestigious Pinot Noir block on this famous site. 20% whole cluster added to the fermentation tank. 4-day cold soak, regular punch downs and an occasional pump-over. 12-days of extended maceration, followed by 15 months of aging in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Welcoming aromas of Bing cherry, baking spices, mushrooms on the grill and fertile earth. Light to mid weight flavors of cherry and dark red berry with a touch of spice and nutty oak. 2016 Scar of the Sea Bien Nacido Vineyard Q Block Old Vine Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.0% alc., $70. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, underbrush, slate and toasty oak. Very gracious on the palate with impeccable balance, offering the middleweight flavor of darker, well-spiced cherry. 2016 Tyler Bien Nacido Vineyard Old Vine Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.0% alc., $70. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose is replete with oak-driven aromas of cigar, pipe bowl, ash and wood. Light to mid-weight in style, featuring juicy flavors of cherry, strawberry and savory herbs that are obscured by overbearing oak treatment. 2015 Au Bon Climat La Bauge-Au-dessus Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $35. The name of this wine translates to “wild party up stairs.” Grapes are sourced from Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat vineyards. Aged 24 months in Francois Frères French oak barrels, 50% new. Lightly fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered. · Light ruby red color in the glass. Aromas of red cherry, burnt tobacco, sandalwood and ash. Relatively light in weight but flavorful, with a core of red cherry fruit embraced by oak. Elegantly styled, with gossamer tannins and some finishing generosity. 2015 Byron Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay 14.1% alc., 300 cases, $40. Clones 4 and 95. Barrel fermented with 100% malolactic fermentation and aged in French oak barrels, 69% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. The nose offers aromas of buttered popcorn, honey, pineapple core and lemon rind. Creamy in the mouth with well-ripened fruit flavors of yellow apple, pineapple, mango and pear. 2015 Au Bon Climat Knox Alexander Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 800 cases, $50. Estate bottled. Very heavy bottle, long cork. Sourced from the finest lots at Bien Nacido and Au Bon Climat vineyards. Block 2 from Le Bon Climat Vineyard was planted in 1994 with a wide mix of clones including 103, 113, 114, 115, 2A, Mt. Eden and some Pinot Meunier. Block 11 at Bien Nacido Vineyard is planted with clones 667, 777, 115, 2A, Swan and Jackson in 1997. 50% Dijon and 50% traditional California selections. Jim’s son Knox arrived in 1998 and this is a distinct bottling to honor him. Aged 22 months in French oak barrels. Fined with egg whites. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The nose offers primarily non-fruit aromas of fertile earth, burnt tobacco and toast. Much more enticing on the palate, with mid weight flavors of Bing cherry and noticeable toasty oak. There is a healthy, but not intrusive backbone of tannins. Considerably more appealing when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle when the oak had become more subservient to the fruit. 2015 Byron Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.3% alc., $55. Clones 2A and Gamay. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 36% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. A deep well of blackberry fruit aromas gain traction over time in the glass. Velvety and luxurious on the palate, with a luscious array of dark fruit flavors including boysenberry and blackberry. Lovely mix of red cranberry, red cherry, spice and pipe smoke aromas with the slightest green note. Lighter in weight, feature delicate flavors of red fruits backed by gossamer tannins. 2014 Presqu’ile Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay 13.9% alc., pH 3.30-3.52, TA 0.68-0.82, $35. An array of Dijon clones grown in outstanding vineyards such as Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills. Feral yeast primary fermentation and feral malolactic conversion. Aged 12 months on the lees in neutral French oak, 6 months in stainless steel. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. The nose comes at you with hi-tone aromas of dried apricot, ocean breeze salinity and a complimentary butter note. Slightly viscous in the mouth, with flavors of green apple, citrus and white peach. 2014 Dolin Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay 13.8% alc., pH 3.48, TA 0.62, 232 cases, $39. Whole cluster pressed and fermented in 33% new and 66% used French oak barrels. 100% malolactic fermentation over 5 months, then left on the lees and stirred twice a month during 15 months of barrel aging. Bottled unfined and filtered. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Lovely perfume of lemon, pineapple, nutty apple and vanilla creme. The flavors of crisp citrus and pear along with saline notes drive this nicely balanced wine that displays good vibrancy and flavor presence. Recommended and a good value. Score: 92. Aged 15 months on the lees with twice monthly stirring in French oak barrels, 33% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. Engaging aromas of grilled lemon, pineapple, spice, vanilla and flint lead to a flavor palate of lemon, pineapple, yellow apple and spice. Creamy in the mouth, with good fortitude, righteous acidity and a gratifying lemon-infused finish. Enjoy this classy wine on its own or with shellfish. Score: 93. 2014 Presqu’ile Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 12.9% alc., $42. 90% Presqu’ile Vineyard, 10% Bien Nacido Vineyard. Clones 777, 667, 115, Pommard and Mt Eden. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. 47% whole cluster. Grapes harvested at a relatively low Brix, minimal new oak aging. SIP certified. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose opens grudgingly in the glass offering aromas of smoky oak, hazelnuts, pungent herbs with no fruit. Better in the mouth, with mid weight flavors of black cherry and black raspberry that have good phenolic ripeness and are backed by a healthy tannic backbone. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 58% new. · Moderately light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Toast dominates the nose that also offers scents of citrus, white peach and pear. Much better with time in the glass with more energetic fruit aromas. The flavors of lemon, white peach, pear, fig and butter echo the nose but with more citrus singing. 2014 Migration Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay 13.5% alc., 165 cases, $55. Released March 2016. Sourced from blocks that include the original 1973 plantings and 1991 plantings in limestone-rich soils. · Very light golden yellow color in the glass. Plenty of interest to offer on the nose, with aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, white peach, banana and crème brûlée. Citrus-based flavors have a steely resolve in this edgy and highly enjoyable offering that speaks more of grapes and stony minerality than oak. Clearly the best of the 2014 Migration Chardonnays. Aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. A mix of aromas including black cherry, black raspberry, floral bouquet, mulch and toasty oak fade a bit over time in the glass. Silky in the mouth, with mid weight plus flavors of earthy black cherry and Middle Eastern spices. The immersed tannins and balanced acidity make for easy drinking. Score: 89. 2014 Migration Bien Nacido Vineyards Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., 310 cases, $68. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and 60% neutral. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of cherry, strawberry and spice. Light to mid weight in style, with layers of dark red cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruits accented with notes of tea and toasty oak. Delicious, with juicy acidity and taut tannins, finishing with nuances of pine needle and Middle Eastern spices. 2014 Bien Nacido Estate Old Vines Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $100. Sourced from the oldest own rooted vines at Bien Nacido. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose reveals itself over time in the glass to to offer a marriage of cherry and toasty oak aromas. Light to mid-weight in style, with flavors of cherry, strawberry, spice and toasty oak. Elegantly fruited, even close to shallow with an appealing juiciness. The wine has a rustic, savory bearing with a modicum of toasty oak in the background. Dijon 667. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, fermentation in 1.3-ton open-top tanks, and aged 23 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Noticeable oak toast and spice frames the aromas of black raspberry and plum. Mid weight plus in concentration, featuring black stone and berry fruits engaged by gentle tannins. Plush and satiny in texture, with integrated alcohol and a modest finish. Lightly fined and filtered before bottling in January 2015. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. An elegant wine of immense appeal offering both dark red and purple fruit flavors with complimentary oak in the background. Gary Farrell Winery has sourced fruit from this historic vineyard for more than 20 years and is one of the fortunate few to source some of the Pommard selection from the legendary Q Block, considered the most prestigious Pinot Noir block on this famous site. De-stemmed with a small percentage of whole clusters, 5 to 7-day cold soak, 10 to 15 days of extended maceration. Pressed gently off the skins and seeds, inoculated for malolactic fermentation, and racked into French oak barrels, 40% of which were new. Aged 14 months on primary lees, racked once just before bottling. · Light garnet color in the glass. The nose blossoms over time in the glass, offering aromas of cherry, strawberry, herbs, spice and sandalwood. Light to mid weight flavors of cherry and raspberry are accented with hints of oak vanillin. Soft and supple in the mouth with juicy acidity and modest fine-grain tannins. 2012 Longoria Bien Nacido Vineyard Block N Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.4% alc, pH 3.51, TA 0.59, 168 cases, $45. 20th vintage of Pinot Noir that Longoria has produced from this vineyard. Block N is one of the original blocks of Pinot Noir at Bien Nacido planted in the 1970s. Harvest Brix 23.8º. 100% de-stemmed, 3- day cold soak, inoculated 7-day fermentation. Aged 14 months in 33% new French oak barrels. · This is a very distinctive wine. Moderately dark reddish purple hue in the glass. The nose starts off with prominent notes of evergreen tree and tomato leaf with a hint of black raspberry and cherry. Over time in the glass, the vegetal notes recede and the fruit is more sparkling. Similarly on the palate, the earthy dark cherry and raspberry fruit is clothed in tobacco leaf and dried herb flavors initially, shedding those notes over time in the glass and developing more pure fruit flavors. Sourced from 40-year-old, own-rooted vines which are some of the first planted in the Santa Maria Valley. 100% whole cluster fermented. Aged 17 months in French oak. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Appealing aromas of cherry and red berry with a hint of oak. Light to medium weight flavors of red and dark red fruits with an herbal, earthy underpinning. The tannins are well integrated, and the wine finishes with plenty of dried cherry goodness and a cut of good acidity. Oak plays a supportive role. A number of aromas jump out of the glass, including black cherry, black currant, baking spice and toasty oak. The backbone of this wine comes from Blocks 1, 7 and 9, all organically farmed hillside plantings. This is the first vintage that grapes were obtained from Block N, one of the original 1972 plantings of own-rooted Martini clone. Aged 15 months sur lies in 35% new and 65% once-used French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Demure aromas of dark red cherries and berries with hints of rose petals, spice and underbrush. Moderately rich with an array of red and black berry flavors supported by svelte tannins and lifted by bright acidity. Elegant and soft in the mouth, with an impressively long, crisp finish. Much more expressive and enjoyable the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle showing hi-tone aromas of cherries, exotic woods and spice. Long in the mouth with tasteful darker berries and cherries that are dominated by oak-driven flavors including coffee and mocha. Smoothly textured with moderate ripe fruit tannins. A little fruitier the following day but still sporting prominent coffee flavor from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2007 The Ojai Vineyard Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., $37.40. · Really lovely dark garnet color in the glass. Very pleasing scents of spiced berries and cherries, with some brier patch, herb garden and subtle oak char. A middle weight offering purple fruits with hints of loamy earth, savory herbs and white pepper in the background. A bit linear but has plenty to recommend including a good spark of acidity on the moderately persistent finish. If you haven’t tried Ojai Vineyard wines lately, you should. A few years back, the Pinot Noirs were styled in a high alcohol, high extraction, Syrah-like fashion but winemaker Adam Tolmach has scaled everything back emphasizing the nuances of Pinot Noir that come with restraint and moderation. Crafted by Fetzer winemaker Dennis Martin who has worked with the Miller family, owners of Bien Nacido Vineyard, since 1985. This is Martin’s private label produced at Fetzer’s winery in Hopland. · Moderately light garnet color. Needs air to open. Earth kissed berries and cherries which are bright and focused augmented by hints of earth, herbs, oak and petrol. Supple tannins make for pleasant drinking. Much better when re-tasted later in the day from a previously opened bottle. I would suggest decanting if you choose to pop a cork now but patience for another year or two will be aptly rewarded. A memorable black raspberry kiss persists on the finish for more than ten seconds. Old vines, an accomplished winemaker and the result is pure Pinot pleasure. The winemaker is David O’Reilly, one of the few Irish born American winemakers. The image of an old Mission Church along El Camino Real in California is on the label. Aged in used barrels. · Deep purple color. The nose is brooding with ripe plum, fig and barnyard aromas. Plentiful ripe black fruits drifting toward Syrah in heft and flavor profile. Primarily Wädenswil with some Dijon 115 and Pommard. 100% whole berry de-stemmed, 4-5 day cold soak, 10-14 day active fermentation with punch down twice daily, partial lots undergo extended maceration for 30 days. Aged 16 months in 60% new French oak barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration. · The flavors trump the nose at this time. Rather subdued aromas of dark fruits, tobacco and fresh veggies. Intense and ripe dark raspberry flavor. Very smooth in the mouth with supple tannins and a mildly tart citric finish. This wine almost seems like a Pinot Noir in Rhone clothing. 2006 Ambullneo Bien Nacido Vineyard Block One Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 135 cases, $119. Old Bien Nacido vines on shallow soils which yield only 1.75 tons per acre. Mt Eden clone. Greg likens it to a Musigny. · Very dark ruby in color and the deepest colored wine in the lineup. The nose is flat, grapey and funky, withholding the charm to come. The attack is beefy and gamy with prodigious truffled dark Pinot fruits. The massive fruit is front and center, and although muscular, the mouth feel is soft and the tannins well integrated. The winery's name, "Five Rivers," comes from the five major rivers that define the essence of the Central Coast of California: San Benito, Salinas, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez and Sisquoc rivers. This label is a member of the Brown-Forman lineup of wines. Winemaker Steve Peck chooses grapes from several Central Coast vineyards including Bien Nacido, Premier Coast Vineyards, Laetitia and Zabala. Winemaking is traditional for Pinot Noir, with aging in 20% new French oak for one year. Clones include Pommard 4 and 5, Dijon (several), and 2A. · Aromas are sweet with Jolly Rancher cherry and floral notes leading to a bounty of dark berries, sandalwood and earth flavors. 2005 Lane Tanner Julia’s Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 375 cases, $33. · This is the richest wine of the lineup but still has lively acid for balance. Decant this wine or wait an hour after pouring a glass or you will be cussing Lane that she sold you a bill of goods! Once it flowers, it offers an attractive nose of plums and currents with a plump mouth feel and a fruit and herbal finish. A little alcohol peaks out on the nose with time. 2005 Kynsi Winery Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $36. Kynsi is a small family winery located in the Edna Valley appellation of San Luis Obispo owned by Don and Gwen Orthman. Pommard and Martini clones. · Dark reddish-purple in color. Sensual aromas of black cherries, blackberries, violets and oak toast. Nicely composed red and black fruits with subtle overtones of oak, savory herbs and that signature Bien Nacido white pepper. Impeccable balance and a clean finish. This remarkable wine seduces rather than overpowers with tender, lithe and captivating flavors. This one was kissed by an angel. 2005 Row Eleven Wine Co Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 15.3% alc., 800 cases, $36. Founded by Richard de los Reyes (“Ricardo D” to his colleagues) several years ago, the name comes from searching for the best rows from the best blocks from the best vineyards. Row Eleven is a unique Multi-Alternating Proprietor or MAP that utilizes several winery facilities, each specializing in a particular variety, in contrast to having one central facility to process grapes. The finest vineyards are then linked to these specialized wineries. Reyes crushes only the best rows, uses whole berries and ferments 10° cooler than most other winemakers. His style is fruit-forward. The grapes for this wine are from the Bien Nacido Vineyard, Dijon clones 115, 667, 777 and Pommard. · Darker fruits, particularly black cherries run through this wine from start to finish. 2005 Sanctuary Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., 1,800 cases, $36. · I was taken by the gorgeous deep ruby color of this wine. The nose is earthy and filled with decomposing wet leaves. The dark stone fruits create a weighty mouth feel, and earthiness, cigar box and toasty oak add intrigue. A luscious core of sweet dark Pinot fruits from start to finish. Everexpanding voluptuous flavors which seem to never end on the tangy and lengthy finish. 2005 LaZarre Hahn Estates Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 275 cases, $50. Adam LaZarre is a former Navy radar specialist who developed a fondness for wine while in the Navy. After his college training at Fresno State, he was brought on board at Hahn Estates in 2001 to revamp and revitalize the brand. He quickly brought the Hahn Estates lineup of wines many accolades and along with Paul Clifton, he proceeded to develop the wildly successful Rex Goliath brand which sold to Constellation Wines for $30 million dollars. The two of them then went to work developing the Cycles Gladiator label. LaZarre produces a small amount of two Pinot Noirs under his own name with grapes sourced from Bien Nacido Vineyard and Sierra Madre Vineyard. · Complex scents of cherry, oak, cardamom, and iodine. 2005 The Ojai Vineyard Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., $50. The grapes come from Block Q widely planted to UCD 13 clone. · Focused scents of ripe and dark red berries, wood and spice. Powerful core of dark berries and cherries with a tug of earthiness and thick oak. I have thoroughly enjoyed Jeff’s Pinot Noirs since the first releases, but I must admit that this may be his best to date. Jeff focuses refined aromatics, soft textures, and overall elegance and this wine hits the mark on all three. · The nose is complex with fruit, violets, smoke and spice leading to dusty red cherry spiced fruit and touched off by refined acidity on the lengthy finish. This is the stuff Pinot dreams are made of. Magnums are available for the first time as well. Cooperage included a mix of 70% stainless steel, 15% new French oak, and 15% neutral French oak. · A more Alsatian interpretation of Pinot Blanc compared to the California-styled Wilkes’ bottling. More body and viscosity, with notes of green apple and petrol. This wine paired perfectly with King Salmon, heirloom tomatoes and a fennel horseradish vinaigrette. 2004 Villa Mt Eden Grand Reserve Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2400 cases, $22. A steal from a Napa producer known more Chardonnay and Cabernet. The winemaker is Mike McGrath. The wines are distributed to fine wine stores. · This Pinot is heavenly scented with red stone fruits, pomegranate, mocha and toast. 2004 Byron Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 17,609 cases, $25. A blend of grapes from the Nielson Estate Vineyard (90%) and Bien Nacido Vineyard (10%). Aged 10 months in 25% new French oak barrels. · This wine has a pleasurable perfume of raspberries, plums and oak. The flavors feature darker fruits enhanced by notes of leather and oak. An elegant, silky styled wine with a nice little cherry kick at the end. The tannins are well-integrated. Cellaring for six months should mellow the oak flavors. A solid daily drinker. 2004 Lane Tanner Bien Nacido Vineyards Pinot Noir 12,8%, $26. As you can tell by the alcohol level, Lane picks her grapes usually before anyone else, but an alcohol below 13% is a rarity, even for her. The wine is pure N Block (Martini clone planted in 1973 on its own rootstock). 35% new oak. · Lane warns that this wine tastes leaner than other years, but feels it will be long-lived. 2004 Sanctuary Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., 370 cases, $36. Winemaker Dennis Martin focuses on Blocks N, G and Q from Bien Nacido Vineyard that are planted primarily to the Pommard clone. Aged 15 months in primarily Francois Frèrés oak barrels, 60% new and 40% once-used. · The exotic nose includes cooked cherries, burnt toffee and spice. The flavors remind me of an arugula salad with strawberries and cherries (there is a subtle note of pepper in arugula which is also typical of Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido Vineyard). 2004 Summerland Winery Bien Nacido Vineyard Block T Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., 800 cases, $40. The grapes for this wine came from one of the oldest section if vines at Bien Nacido Vineyard, planted to Clone 22 in 1973. Pommard has been added between the old vine rows. An initial cold soak is followed by fermentation in 1.5-ton open-top fermenters using inoculated yeast, punch downs by hand, and aging in 100% Francois Frères cooperage (33% new) for 11 months. · Lovely aromas of cherries and cranberries are duplicated in the flavors with a touch of pepper. Despite very large production, this Santa Cruz Mountain winery continues to craft very attractive Pinot Noirs. The 2004 David Bruce Russian River Valley Pinot Noir (4996 cases, $40) was also tasted and decent. The wines enjoy widespread retail distribution and are available on the winery’s website at www.davidbrucewinery.com. · This wine has it all: a deep, fruity nose, sweet and juicy Pinot fruits, velvety texture, and a crisp finish. 2003 Row Eleven Wine Company Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., 1,200 cases, $30. Predominantly Pommard clone from the Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills vineyards in Santa Maria Valley. Aged in primarily 3 to 5-year-old Remond and Francois Fréres oak barrels. · The nose is thick with rich oak and pepper. There is a decent core of dark cherries, but again toasted oak takes center stage. The mouth feel is full and opulent. The finish is slightly astringent with vibrant acidity. 2002 Nicolaysen Family Vineyards Bien Nacido Vineyards Pinot Noir 15.1% alc., 275 cases. This wine is from plantings over 30 years old in the “T” Block of Bien Nacido Vineyard. The unusual clone is 22 (from Beaujolais). The 2002 is the latest release. · Dark in color, rich, ripe, generous and jammy, with potent octane, this is not a wine for the faint of heart.
