2017 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

14.5% alc., 19,095 cases, $25. Screw cap. Sourced from Sangiacomo and Hi Vista vineyards in Carneros, Dutton and Martinelli vineyards in the Russian River Valley, and Steve MacRostie’s Wildcat Mountain Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA. Whole cluster pressed gently, 85% fermented in French oak Barrels, 20% new, and 15% fermented and aged in stainless steel. 85% malolactic fermentation. · Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. The nose offers a nice mix of lemon, spice, white nectarine, butter and vanilla aromas. Impressive energy with good oak integration, displaying a range of citrus flavors and the slightest note of spice and flint. 2017 Sonoma-Loeb Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., $36. Grapes sourced from Sangiacomo, Calesa and Dutton Ranch vineyards. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Slightly confected aromas of dark cherry, baking spice, waffle cone, warm almonds and vanilla. Noticeable oak embellishment in this full-bodied style with giving flavors of black cherry fruit framed with notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. 2017 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

13.5% alc., pH 3.44, TA 0.59, $39. Sourced from 8 vineyards, primarily located in the cool Green Valley of Russian River Valley. All vineyards are Sonoma County Certified Sustainable. Barrel fermented with a combination of indigenous and inoculated yeast strains. Full malolactic fermentation. Lees are stirred twice monthly through the winter. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Lovely aromas of lemon, pineapple, fresh yellow apple and ripe pear. 2017 Sonoma-Loeb Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., pH 3.76, TA 0.65, $43. Clones 667, 777 and 115. Fermented with yeast strains from Burgundy and Germany. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose is heavily oak-inspired with aromas of toast and tobacco accompanying fruit aromas of black cherry. Better on the palate, with noticeable grace, softness and suavity, featuring a mid weight plus essence of black cherry cola flavor with a mantle of oak. The finish is long, generous and spirited but with a slight sense of alcoholic warmth. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the nose was still oak-driven, but the oak was better integrated on the palate. Score: 89. 2017 Chappellet Grower Collection Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., pH 3.74, TA 0.58, 1,288 cases, $45. Sourced from some of the most prized sections of Pinot Noir at Dutton Ranch. Clones 115, 667, 777 and Pommard. Harvest Brix 24.8º. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Plenty of oakdriven perfume of dark chocolate, toast and vanilla upon opening, but the oak declines over time and blackberry and black currant aromas come to the front. The luscious core of purple and black fruits is quite satisfying. Silken in texture, with agreeable tannins, sooty oak in the background and a modest finish. Score: 90. 2017 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., pH 3.54, TA 0.56, $45. Dutton Ranch farms over 80 unique vineyards located in the cooler areas of the Russian River Valley, primarily in the Green Valley sub-appellation. This wine is a blend of grapes from 12 of these Sonoma County Certified Sustainable vineyard. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, 14-20 days on the skins, and aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose arrives slowly to reveal attractive aromas of cherry liquor, black raspberry, fertile earth and savory herbs. Mid weight plus in style, with a core of earth-toned cherry and blackberry fruits. Highly approachable, with redeeming balance and some finishing length. Score: 90. 2016 Anaba Dutton Ranch Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

13.0% alc., pH 3.36, TA 0.67, 278 cases, $42. Grapes come from the Mills Station Vineyard and Shop Block Vineyard in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA lying within the Sonoma Coast AVA. Whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented, 90% malolactic fermentation, aged 17 months on the lees in French oak barrels, 27% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Delicate aromas of lemon, yellow apple and honeydew melon. Rich and creamy on the palate, and loaded with pineapple, honey, blond caramel and brioche flavors, with nicely integrated acidity woven into the fabric of the wine. 2016 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., pH 3.60, TA 0.58, $44. Sourced from eight Dutton Ranch vineyards. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, 14 to 20 days on skins, and aged in French oak barrels, 40% new, for 10 months. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. This wine is aged in significant new oak and will need more time for the oak to integrate. At this stage, the nose offers aromas of dark cherry, spice, underbrush and woodshed. The mid weight flavors of black cherry, purple and black berries appeal but the wine is tight. Nicely balanced with caressing tannins and a short finish. Considerably better when re-tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle with more aromatic goodness and more finish. There is no hurry to drink this wine now. Score: 89. 2016 Sonoma-Loeb Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.58, $45. Clones 667, 777 and 115. Harvest Brix 25.5º. Fermented using yeast strains from Burgundy and Germany. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Muted, but pleasant aromas of black fruits. Full-bodied array of purple and black fruits are backed by a muscular tannic backbone. Sleek in texture with a very long, fruit-driven finish. A little less charming than the Sonoma Coast bottling. 2015 Anaba Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

13.5% alc., pH 3.46, TA 0.61, 728 cases, $36. Sourced from J McK Estate Vineyard, Denmark Vineyard and Dutton Ranch vineyards. Harvest Brix 23.8º. Whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented, 80% malolactic fermentation, and aged 17 months on the lees in French oak barrels, 20% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Aromas of lemon oil, lime, grapefruit and pear lead off. Clean, crisp and refreshing featuring flavors of citrus, golden apple and pear with hints of caramel, honey, vanilla and salinity. 2015 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

13.5% alc., pH 3.43, TA 0.66, $38. A blend of grapes from seven vineyards most of which are old clone vineyards located in the heart of Green Valley. Barrel fermented using a combination of indigenous and inoculated yeast strains. Full malolactic fermentation, with lees stirring twice monthly through the winter. Total aging 10 months, 40% new French oak barrels. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. A rich and heady Chardonnay with aromas of lemon oil, poached pear, butter, oak and iron. Highly flavorful, with tastes of apple, pear, lemon, creme caramel and toast. An outspoken offering that is very creamy in the mouth and generously oaked. Score: 90. 2015 Anaba Dutton Ranch Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

13.9% alc., pH 3.36, TA 0.71, 255 cases, $42. Wente clone. Harvest Brix 23.3º. Sourced from Dutton Mills Station and Shop Block vineyards in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley. Whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented, 50% malolactic fermentation, and aged 17 months on the lees in French oak barrels, 30% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Shy, but pleasant aromas of lemon curd, green apple, and sawdust. Reserved flavors of lemon, grapefruit and kiwi are uplifted by energetic acidity. 13.5% alc., pH 3.57, TA 0.65, $44. A blend of several Green Valley vineyards with additions of Russian River sites. Yields down nearly 50% in contributing vineyards. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, punch down up to 3 times a day, 14 to 20 days on skins. Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. There is a plethora of vivid purple and black berry aromas and tastes in this discreetly concentrated wine complimented with a bit of savory herbs and sweet oak. Showing off inviting harmony and easy drink ability, this wine has enough richness of fruit and tannic structure to thoroughly satisfy. An ideal introduction to the Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir style. 2015 Migration Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $68. There is not much specific about the Dutton Ranch designation since the Duttons farm so many acres, but this bottling concentrates on the Green Valley or coolest and foggiest part of the Russian River Valley. Clones 115 and “828.” Aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new, 60% neutral. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose opens broadly in the glass, sporting aromas of black cherry, Asian spices, and underbrush. An intense attack of black cherry fruit alerts the senses in this middleweight styled wine that is giving and forward. Creamy and sleek in the mouth, with melded tannins, and compatible acidity. A blend of seven Dutton Ranch farmed vineyards. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, 14-20 days on skins, aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. A good amount of oak shows up in this wine that offers aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry, mulch and sandalwood, and light to mid weight flavors of cherry, strawberry and toast. 14.2% alc., $44. A blend of older plantings in western Sonoma County including heritage clones and selections. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, aged on lees with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in French oak barrels, 38% new. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Clean aromas of petrichor, banana creme, jasmine and peach. Simple, but satisfying, with a supple mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and bright flavors of lemon, pineapple and nutty oak. Score: 89. 14.3% alc., pH 3.60, TA 0.57, 297 cases, $49. Release spring 2017. Thomas Road and Manzana vineyards. Harvest Brix 25.5º-26.0º. Clones 115, 777 and “828.” Aged 11 months on the lees in French oak barrels, 34% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of fresh cherry, baking spice and toasty oak lead off. In the mouth, there is a modest attack of black cherry and blackberry fruits accented with vivid oak. Vineyard was planted to Pommard clone in 1998 in Goldridge sandy loam soil. 100% destemmed, 5-day cold soak, aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Regal aromas of fresh black cherry pie, nutmeg and herbs. Delicious charge of seductive cherry and raspberry fruits in a mid weight style with impressive palate fullness and overreaching length. 14.5% alc., 316 cases, $68. Released September 2015. Sourced from three Dutton Ranch properties, all in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley. A block and barrel selection of favorite Dutton lots and represents only about 7% of the total fruit obtained from Dutton Ranch. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Complex nose offering aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry, underbrush and a touch of oak. Silky in the mouth, strutting a middleweight core of cherry cola, dark raspberry, black plum and baking spice flavors framed by integrated tannins. Plenty of Russian River Valley luscious fruit in this polished wine. Unchanged when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Score: 91. 2013 Dutton Goldfield Dutton Ranch Shop Block Green Valley of Russian River Valley Pinot Blanc

12.8% alc., pH 3.40, TA 0.56, 339 cases, $25. Warren Dutton’s original Graton Road ranch was planted to French Colombard and Gray Riesling when purchased in 1964. In the 1970s, he replaced the Riesling with apples and French Colombard. When it was time to replant the block in 2003, the Duttons decided on Pinot Blanc to augment the adjacent Chardonnay. The vineyard is dry farmed. Stainless steel fermented, partial MLF. · Pale straw color and clear in the glass. Luscious aroma of fresh peaches lemon peel, roasted almonds and the air after a heavy rain. Crisp on the palate, with an intense peach flavor which expands joyously in the mouth and clings to the finish forever. A bit of lemon, lime, grapefruit and vanilla flavors add interest. 2013 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

14.5% alc., 25,000 cases, $25, screwcap. Sourced from several vineyards in the Sonoma Coast including Sangiacomo, Dutton Ranch, Martinelli Woolsey Road and Goldrock Ridge vineyards. Whole cluster pressed, racked into French oak barrels for fermentation, 20% of which were new. 100% malolactic fermentation, aged on the lees for six months with occasional stirring. A few lots were fermented in stainless steel tanks and never went to barrel. · Moderately light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. I was enamored with the nose which kept pumping out aromas of lemon, spiced pear, golden apple and brioche. Easygoing on the palate, soft and smooth, with flavors of lemon, pear and toast embraced by acidity that is not too assertive. An impressive and very affordable appellation offering. Score: 90. 2013 Dutton-Goldfield Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay

13.5% alc., pH 3.45, TA 0.61, $38. The heart of this wine is old vine and old clone vineyards located in the Green Valley: Mill Station, Walker Hill and Rued. Rounded out with Morelli Lane Vineyard Hyde clone and some Dijon 95 from JJJS by the old Dutton shop. Indigenous and inoculated yeast strains. 100% malolactic fermentation, aged sur lie with twice monthly stirring through the winter. Aged a total of 10 months in French oak barrels (40% new). · Moderate golden straw color and clear in the glass. Inviting aromas of pear, peach skin, lemon and fresh butter. Somewhat richly fruited with flavors of lemon curd, pineapple, green apple and poached pear. Nicely balanced with complimentary oak treatment, finishing dry with bright acidity. 2013 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

14.2% alc., $38. Inaugural wine replacing the Napa Valley Chardonnay after 20 vintages. Released July 2014. Predominant sources include Zio Tony Ranch, Durell, Dutton Ranch, Parmalee Hill, Sun Chase, and Gap’s Crown vineyards. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged sur lie with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged in 35% new French oak barrels. · Moderate straw color and clear in the glass. Aromas of lemon, yellow applesauce, lemongrass and nutty oak. Lemon flavors drive the pleasure with hints of apple and melon. Slightly creamy on the palate with nicely integrated oak and a tart lemony finish. Easy to like. Score: 89. 14.5% alc., pH 3.72, TA 0.59, $39. Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus uses Pinot Noir clones 667, 777 and 115 to produce this wine. Harvest Brix 25.6º-26.8º. Wild yeast and proprietary Burgundian strains were used in the fermentation. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The elevating aromas of spiced black raspberry and black cherry are very inviting. A bold expression of Pinot Noir with luscious flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, spice, mocha and coffee-scented oak. Very satisfying with a notably intense finish and admirable balance. Discreetly concentrated flavors of strawberry, cherry, nutmeg spice, and cola with a compliment of oak. Easy to like with modest tannins and a bashful fruitfilled finish. 2013 Dutton Estate Karmen-Isabella-Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

A selection of the Dutton’s favorite three vineyards (Manzana, Marty’s and Thomas Road) with the goal of producing a vision of the Russian River Valley. The wine is named after the Dutton’s youngest daughter and is a blend of reserve barrels. Clones “828,” 777 and 115.100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, aged 10 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Shy aromas of red cherry rose petal and underbrush. Vibrant, with good acidity, offering a mid weight melange of dark red cherry and berry flavors shadowed by toasty oak. A nose with intent, offering scents of lemon oil, white peach, vanilla pod, creme brulee and a fleeting floral note. Aged 11 months sur lees in 35% new French oak. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is closed initially showing little more than aroma of coffee bean. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the nose had blossomed, offering pleasing aromas of cherry, spice and rose petal. On the palate, the wine has a welcoming softness and freshness with juicy flavors of Bing cherries, ripe strawberries, spice, cola and complimentary oak framed by fine-grain tannins. This is one of the coolest climate sites in the Russian River Valley. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The glorious nose is deep and inspired, with vivid aromas of fresh cherries, spice, Prada leather coat and rose petal. A cherry bombast on the palate that really made me sit up and take notice. Discreetly concentrated with added accents of spice, raspberry and plum with a complimentary note of smoky oak. An absolutely delicious and harmonious wine that floods the mouth with flavor. Previously reviewed 9/29/13. · Moderate reddish-purple hue in the glass. Aromatically alive with scents of strawberry preserve, cherry, vanilla and haunting oak. Mid weight flavors of ripe strawberry, black cherry, cola, mocha and sassafras with some toasty oak in the background. Very Caliesque in style with full-on extraction and generous oak treatment. The fruit is well balanced by firm tannins, the mouth feel is velvety, and the wine finishes with good intensity albeit showing a hint of heat. Score: 89. Demure but very pleasant aromas of lemon curd, Asian pear, and citrus peel leading to flavors of baked pear, pineapple, brioche, toast and baking spice. Slightly creamy on the palate and impeccably balanced. A little richer than the Carneros bottling with slightly more length on the finish. Like this wine for its polish and exuberance. A blend from seven blocks of Chardonnay farmed by the Dutton family, largely planted with California heirloom selections (Robert Young, Rued, Hyde-Wente, and UCD clone 4). Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged sur lie with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel, aged in 45% new French oak barrels. · Pale straw color in the glass. Aromas of peach, Asian pear, coconut and sawmill lead to very tasty flavors of baked peach, pear, lemon curd, cocoa and toffee. Very smooth in the mouth with well integrated supporting acidity, finishing bright and clean. Very well crafted and highly enjoyable, but not quite the flavor impact of the Hudson Vineyard offering. 14.5% alc., $45. Fruit from Gap’s Crown Vineyard is a major element in this wine, which also includes grapes from winegrowers like the Duttons, Martinellis, Charlie Chenoweth and Steve Hill. The season produced a concentrated crop with small berries and thick skins to this vintage Pinot Noir is one of the most extracted expressions of this wine ever. Wild and cultured yeast fermentations. Aged in 45% new French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. A full-bodied arsenal of dark berry, fruit leather, spice and raisin aromas and flavors with an earthy, forest floor undertone. A burly wine that makes no apologies for its copious fruit and tannin. 13% alc., $38. · Mineral imbibed black cherry scents evolve in the glass to a purely dark fruit compote which is very alluring. Black raspberry flavors are set off by a hint of oak. 2005 Pahlmeyer Pinot Noir

14.9% alc., 14.9% alc., 1,400 cases. The grapes were sourced from Goldridge, Pellegrini and Dutton vineyards as well as Wayfarer. Winemaking is the same as for the Jayson except barrel aging was 15 months. · The color is deeper than the Jayson. This wine has a massive concentration of dark wild berry and plummy fruit. The nose is shy but hints of earth, meat and crushed blackberries. This Pinot is brooding at this stage and the oak tannins are noticeable on the finish. This will need some cellar time to fully emerge (drink the Jayson now while the Pahlmeyer ages).
